March Rankings Update – Third Base

We are updating our rankings for the stretch run of draft season! Today we’ll have third base and catcher.

We’re using Yahoo! eligibility requirements which is 5 starts or 10 appearances. These rankings assume the standard 5×5 categories and a re-draft league. If we forgot someone, please let us know in the comments and we’ll make sure he’s added for the updates. If you have questions for a specific ranker on something he did, let us know in the comments. There will be differences, sharp differences, within the rankings. The rankers have different philosophies when it comes to ranking, some of which you’re no doubt familiar with through previous iterations. Of course the idea that we’d all think the same would be silly because then what would be the point of including multiple rankers?! Think someone should be higher or lower? Make a case. Let us know why you think that. The chart is sortable. If a ranker didn’t rank someone that the others did, he was given that ranker’s last rank +1.

I still don’t get the ranking for Justin Turner by Justin. It has to be a silly Justin vs. Justin thing at this point.

Really wish we could get an OBP version of this, most people dont play in AVG leagues any more (especially since this is sabermetrics land)

lol, gtfohwts. I like OBP leagues just fine, but they aren’t inherently better. In fact, they just further skew the value proposition toward power guys. AVG is fluky, sure, but at least it adds value a player class.

Since most leagues have corner and middle infielders, it would be really helpful to see the rankings for 1B/3B and 2B/SS combined together.

No Big Deal … but is there some reason that Mike is consistently downranking Cubs position players vis-a-vis the rest of the panel? In the March rankings he’s the lowest on Bryant (1B,3rd,OF), Schwarber (OF,C), Baez (SS, 3rd), Jay, Russell, and Contreras (OF) And he’s second lowest on: Contreras (C), Montero, Zobrist (2nd), and Baez (2nd). BUT … At least he’s bullish on Heyward.

OTOH, compared to the rest of the panel, he seems to favor Cubs pitchers giving the highest or second ranking to Lester, Arietta, Hendricks, and Montgomery. Granted Lackey is an outlier that he doesn’t like as much (relatively speaking); I assume that he thinks that Lackey is too old to trust.

In the interests of full disclosure, yes, I am a Cubs fan. But I don’t play fantasy baseball, so I don’t really care about these rankings – I read the articles just to glean interesting snippets of information and somehow (no idea how or why) noticed the pattern. I’m just curious.

I love to see Franco consistently so low in rankings, projections, etc. Was worried he’d be climbing the ranks late in spring and I wouldn’t get a value.

He went 25/88/.255 (with poor BABIP) last year – as a 23-year old. At his current price, just repeating 2016 would be fine value. Even modest growth from this former top prospect and you’re looking at 30/100/.275, and an easy top-10 positional finish.

I couldn’t seem to post this on the 2017 Rankings Spreadsheet post so I’m putting it here in case it helps someone. I compiled the updated March re-rankings (except RP since that one hasn’t been released yet) and piled them into this spreadsheet. Names are all linked to the players’ Fangraphs pages. RK refers to the Rotographs Avg rank as shown on these amazing blog posts.

Instructions: Inputting a player’s cost will turn the row red. Inputting a “yes” in the Target column will turn the row yellow. Inputting a “no” in the Target column will turn the row red. Inputting a “yes” in the My Team column will turn the row green.
