Lineup Analysis (5/20/22)

American League

• Steady.

Luis Rengifo (.304/.385/.348) is getting regular playing time at second base while batting mainly sixth.

• Same guys all the time.

• One of Michael Brantley or Yordan Alvarez is normally the DH with the other in the outfield.

• When healthy, it’s the same players every day.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (.606 OPS, 2 HR, 2 SB, .346 OPS over the last two weeks) is moving down the lineup from the fifth to the seventh spot.

• Even more of a mess to figure out with Manuel Margot and Brandon Lowe on the IL.

Harold Ramirez (.321/.372/.372) has started five of the last six.

Vidal Bruján (.111/.200/.185, 1 SB, 2 CS) has started in seven of the last eight games.

Red Sox

• Consistent except for a rightfield-first base timeshare between Jackie Bradley Jr. (.536 OPS), Bobby Dalbec (.502 OPS), and Franchy Cordero (.616 OPS).

Whit Merrifield is back to batting leadoff after hitting .271/.286/.407 with 2 HR and 3 SB over the past two weeks.

Alek Thomas (.886 OPS, 2 HR) has started 11 of 12 while hitting in the bottom third of the lineup. He’s got to be moving up soon.

• It’s the same guys all the time with Edwin Ríos and Hanser Alberto being the subs.

• The regulars are all back and healthy and what a mess. And it has only been one game in the last eight against a lefty starter. It’ll need at least a week to settle out.

Tommy La Stella hasn’t played at second in three games back with Thairo Estrada (.689 OPS, 2 HR, 6 SB) starting all three at second.

Jesús Sánchez (.221/.280/.377 with 4 HR) has only started in one of the last three games. I had high hopes for him this season, but he might just be a streaming option in 12-team or shallower leagues.

Bryan De La Cruz (.325/.417/.475, 1 HR) had started three in a row but hurt his finger.

Erik Gonzalez (.504 OPS) has taken over Joey Wendle’s infield utility role while Wendle is on the IL.

Lane Thomas (.525 OPS) and Victor Robles (.595 OPS) are splitting time in center.

• There is a ton of what looks to be random lineup changes that stick for five days and then another lineup gets used.

Robinson Canó (.491 OPS) has started three of the four games since signing.

• With the addition of Cano, there are nine non-catchers who get cycled in and out.

Rhys Hoskins (.239/.316/.457) has leadoff for five straight games.

Johan Camargo (vs LHP) and Bryson Stott (vs RHP) are in a shortstop platoon.

Odúbel Herrera (vs RHP) and Roman Quinn (vs LHP) are in a pseudo platoon.
