Get Your Last Minute Steals From These Names!

It’s Tuesday morning, which likely means that it’s too late for weekly transaction leaguers to pick up of any these players. But you could still benefit if you already own one of these names and because of the short Monday schedule, still have start/bench flexibility for the week. For the most part, though, these are names that daily leaguers could pick up if you have the need for speed over the final days of the season. These are more lightly owned names in which our rest of season depth chart projections are forecasting a steal for.

Trevor Story | BOS

Ya’ll forget he’s back?! He’s only owned in 35% of CBS leagues! He returned on September 7 and has been playing regularly ever since, swatting two home runs and stealing four bases. The skills remain suspect after he departed Coors Field, but he clearly still possesses some semblance of power and speed, and calls a good ballpark home, where he’ll be hitting for half his games this week.

Geraldo Perdomo | ARI

Without any standout fantasy contribution, he’s typically more of an injury replacement than a middle infielder fantasy owners seek out. While he has only swiped eight bases this year, after 16 last season, all the projection systems are forecasting he’ll swipe a ninth by season’s end. With little power and batting average super random over a tiny sample, you’re really just praying he swipes a bag or two.

Leody Taveras | TEX

Though his offense has gone downhill, which led to reduced playing time earlier in the season, he’s still managed to swipe a career high 21 bases this year. This, despite just a .290 OBP. Everything else is pretty normal for him, except his BABIP has collapsed, leading to the weak output. But all we care about for this article’s purpose is his potential to swipe some bags over this final week.

Jose Siri | TB

Siri is a daily transaction leaguer’s consideration only, as he’s lost his starting job and has earned random starts throughout each week that are impossible to predict. He’s done his typical swinging and missing, combined with above average power and displays of speed. Despite an ugly .261 OBP, he has stolen 14 bases, so his power/speed mix has always been intriguing in fantasy leagues.

Parker Meadows | DET

Since his recall in early August after getting demoted in early July, he has posted a .351 wOBA with five steals in less than a third of a season’s worth of PAs. That comes with five homers too, making him a nice little power/speed combo meal as well. Leading off for the Tigers should help him accumulate PAs, giving him more chances to swipe a bag. He’s going to be a popular sleeper next year.

Brandon Marsh | PHI

It’s incredible that a guy posting a SwStk% right around 10% (versus league averages around 11%) has struck out over 30% of the time the last two seasons. That’s what happens when you attend the Nolan Jones School of Hitting, whereby you swing at pitches inside the strike zone far less frequently than the league average, resulting in a high rate of called strikes. That said, his strong walk rate has allowed him to post acceptable OBP marks, and he’s swiped a career high 18 bases this year. Overall, this is actually a pretty good offensive profile, but obviously those strikeouts need to come down. You’d think simply swinging more at pitches inside the strike zone would be an easy fix, but it clearly hasn’t been so far!

Zack Gelof | OAK

How is a 17 homer and 23 steal guy only owned in 49% of CBS leagues?! I guess the rest of his numbers being weak explains things, as he’s combined for just 106 runs scored plus RBI. Gelof is another who has managed a good number of steals despite a poor OBP, currently sitting at .273. He’s been quite good at stealing bags too, going 23 for 26, so imagine if he even got his OBP up to merely .300. He did just that last year when he posted a .337 mark, but he has run more often this year. He swings and misses a lot and is on bad home park for offense, but you can’t ignore that combination of power and speed.

Kyle Isbel | KC

Isbel hasn’t shown much in the power department, but he’s been decent in steals, despite rarely earning consistent playing time. He has swiped 11 bases this year with just a .289 OBP, which seems to be a theme of this list. There’s not a whole lot else you could hope for this week from him, so he’s for the truly desperate.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa | PIT

IKF’s steals have declined since the last two years, but he’s still managed double digits for the fourth straight season and has contributed a bit in home runs as well. A consistent OBP just over .300 has given him enough opportunities to both steal bases and score runs, so he’s a respectable choice in deeper leagues for steals chasers.

Harrison Bader | NYM

Continuing to show some power and speed, Bader is once again near the 20 steal plateau. Like some of the others, his power means you might also get a home run from him, so he’s not only for those desperate for steals.

Dylan Moore | SEA

Moore fits right into this list with his 31 steals and 10 home runs…but batting just .208 with weakish runs scored and RBI totals. But hey, he’s tied for 15th in steals in baseball and is likely widely available in shallower leagues, as he’s rostered in just 22% of CBS leagues. That’s almost like free steals when he’s in the lineup. While he’s not a regular there, he’s rotated between second and third base recently and not only limited to starting against left-handers. He’s a good target in daily leagues when you see his name in the linuep.

Jonatan Clase | TOR

Recently coming over from the Mariners, I loved his fantasy potential given what he’s done in the minors. Although without a starting job, he has started three of five games since his recall. He stole a whopping 79 bases between High-A and Double-A in the minors last year and 38 at Triple-A this year. He also owns power though so he’s not just another Juan Pierre. And in just 50 PAs in the Majors, he’s already swiped three bases. You want a steals sleeper this week? Clase is your man.

Gustavo Campero | LAA

The latest Angels starter no one has ever heard of, Campero has become the team’s regular right fielder, swiping two bases already. He stole 33 between Double-A and Triple-A this year after swiping 20 in less than half a season at High-A last year. He owns power too, so despite him first getting his shot at age 26, I really like this skill set.
