Really phoned this report in today, huh?
No mention of Castro BS, Hendriks looking better, Wandy SV, Holmes used in 7th. Not to mention all of the high usage relievers of the last few days like Romano (3 of last 4 days), Lange (back to back), Barlow (back to back), etc.
Hey Gregg—I considered all of those things, so I’ll address them all here, don’t want you to think I just overlooked things:
Castro: I don’t necessarily write up every blown save in Losing A Grip; yes, Castro had a rough one yesterday but I’d need to see a string of poor performance for him to be losing the job.
Lange and Barlow: I’ve reached the point of the season where back-to-back on its own isn’t really worth noting unless the pitch totals are super high (40+ in the two days), so I’d consider Lange borderline and Barlow a pretty save bet to be available today.
Romano: I often note three-of-four but he didn’t in this case because he got a day off before the third game and only threw six pitches yesterday, so I’d be pretty surprised if he wasn’t available today.
Hendriks: definitely trending in the right direction but I think I want to give it one more outing before it’s a Committee Clarity situation; I think it’s also plausible Graveman just wasn’t available since he rarely if ever goes three straight.
I feel like there was a nicer way to ask this. Don’t be such a jerk.
Liam Hendricks?
Any new word on when Puk will be back, keeps being pushed off. When he is back I have to decide between him, Hendricks, and Kimbrel on dropping 1, possibly 2 of them.
Puk made a rehab appearance on the 30th and then went back to back on the 2nd and 3rd of June, so I think he’s got to be pretty darn close to a return. Floro’s been shaky so I think Puk gets the closing job back, and Hendriks is trending towards that as well. Kimbrel probably splits with Alvarado when he’s back this week.
Where do you think Ben Joyce will end up settling in the Angels’ bullpen pecking order? Will he be reliable for holds at the very least?
Could definitely see him getting up to third in line behind Estévez and Devenski as of right now, but from what I’ve seen he’s VERY fastball-reliant and MLB hitters can square up velocity if they’ve seen it enough times. Wouldn’t really say anyone but those top two guys are reliable for holds, but Joyce is as good a bet as any.
