• Giovanny Gallegos, STL: 21 pitches on Monday. | RosterResource
Tagged with the loss and a blown save, Gallegos started off the top of the ninth with a two-run lead. After recording the first out on a Pete Alonso popup, the Cardinals held a 97.2% WE and it looked like a Gallegos save was a given. It was then a mix of an offensive explosion from the Mets, including a Brandon Nimmo home run, and defensive indifference from the Cardinals that ended the inning 5-2. With no counter from the St. Louis offense in the bottom of the frame, the Mets came away with a win. This was Gallegos’ first blown save of the season and he has four saves so far. He has been getting hit lately, giving up seven in his last three appearances along with five earned runs in his last two. I wouldn’t be surprised if Gallegos gets a chance to redeem himself in Tuesday night’s game, but if that’s not the case, either Génesis Cabrera or Ryan Helsley are likely candidates to fill in for a save opportunity.

“He has been getting hit lately” regarding Gallegos …
It’s probably worth mentioning that 1) the two run-scoring hits he gave up were ground balls that never left the infield and 2) he would have finished the inning with zero runs allowed and the save if it weren’t for a throwing error by Arenado.
those runs should’ve been 100% unearned, too. brutal call by the scorer.
The write up on Gallegos is so weak…With 2 outs and a ground ball to 3rd, Arenado sailed a throw that arguably should have been an error instead of a single and a throwing error that ended up giving Gallegos 4 earned runs instead of 0. He also failed to cover 1st base in time on the following play that would have won the game still 2-1 and 0 earned runs again. Obviously the latter play was of his own doing, but just think the context needs to be throw out there instead of this being displayed as some sort of blow up outing because he gave up 4 earned runs
The velocity is down 1 mph, strikeouts are way down, and that’s all with a 0 HR/FB and a GB rate that’s cratered. It’s only 7 innings, but there are real causes for concern.
Swinging strike percentage is fine and the lack of strikeouts is fluky. His velocity is in line with 2019-2020, when he was still a dominant reliever. I don’t think there’s anything to be worried about.
I get that, I also slightly disagree but it’s not really my point. My point is that there was a total of 1 write-up for today’s Bullpen Report (Which is totally fine! There aren’t always a ton of write ups needed) and it lacks the context it deserves.
He got a bit unlucky, sure, but his peripherals are all down and it doesn’t seem like he’s hitting his spots. Not a good situation.
Barlow pitched the 9th with a 4 run lead, but the at the start of the 8th the score was 3-2. Still think he’s the guy, just been unlucky thus far with the Rangers play and save opportunities.
He hasn’t gotten a single save opportunity this year and the manager has been very upfront about not wanting to use him in save situations. Matt Bush has been given the save opportunities even after blowing one earlier in the week. It’s getting ridiculous to continue showing him as the main guy when the team clearly doesn’t think so
Woodward called Barlow the closer three days ago and said that he wouldn’t pitch that day because of workload. That is the only save on the season for the Rangers to date (which Bush got because Barlow was unavailable).
Joe Barlow hasn’t gotten a single save opportunity this year. He’s not even in the mix for the Rangers closer and yet you show him as the main guy.
Holmes is not the back up in NY
