Bullpen Report: April 17, 2023

The 2023 version of the Bullpen Report includes five different sections, as well as the closer chart, which can be found at the bottom of the page.

We will always include a link to the full Closer Depth Chart at the bottom of the Bullpen Report each day. It’s also accessible from the RosterResource drop-down menu and from any RosterResource page. Please let us know what you think.

  1. Notable Workloads: Primary closers or valuable members of a closer committee who have been deemed unavailable or likely unavailable for the current day due to recent workload.
  2. Injury News
  3. Outlier Saves: Explanation for a non-closer earning a save during the previous day.
  4. Committee Clarity: Notes on a closer committee that clarify a pitcher’s standing in the group.
  5. Losing A Grip: Struggling closers who could be on the hot seat.

The “RosterResource” link will take you to the corresponding team’s RosterResource depth chart, which will give you a better picture of the full bullpen and results of the previous six days (pitch count, save, hold, win, loss, blown save).

Notable Workloads

Scott Barlow, KCR: 16 pitches on Sunday; 17 pitches on Saturday. | RosterResource

Aroldis Chapman threw 23 pitches on Sunday, so his availability for Monday is questionable as well. Taylor Clarke could be the best option to close.

•Devin Williams, MIL: 33 pitches on Sunday. | RosterResource

Peter Strzelecki and Matt Bush should both be good to go Monday, with Hoby Milner an option from the left side.

David Robertson, NYM: 10 pitches on Sunday; 13 pitches on Saturday. | RosterResource

Co-closer Adam Ottavino threw 28 pitches Saturday, and while he had Sunday off, he might need another day. Brooks Raley 레일리 and Drew Smith (26 pitches Saturday) are other options.

Michael Fulmer, CHC: 16 pitches on Sunday; 16 pitches on Saturday. | RosterResource

Brad Boxberger (who got the save on Sunday; more on him in the Outlier Saves section) should be available to come back on Monday if Fulmer’s not.

David Bednar, PIT: 15 pitches on Sunday; 11 pitches on Saturday. | RosterResource

Colin Holderman also worked back-to-back days, which could leave Dauri Moreta as Monday’s closer if one is needed.

Outlier Saves

Ryan Brasier, BOS | RosterResource

Kenley Jansen pitched back-to-back days on Friday and Saturday, and while he was extraordinarily efficient, needing just 20 pitches between the two outings, he was unavailable on Sunday. Chris Martin just went on the IL, John Schreiber had gone back-to-back days, and Josh Winckowski threw 45 pitches on Friday, which left the unlikely duo of Kaleb Ort and Brasier for the final two innings following Garrett Whitlock’s seven-inning gem. Brasier had a tall task ahead of him, with Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani due up second and third, but he dispatched the top of the lineup in order to earn his first save of the year and ninth of his career.

•Brad Boxberger, CHC | RosterResource

The Cubs flipped around their bullpen hierarchy a little bit on Sunday, using Michael Fulmer with a couple of righties and a lefty due in the eighth before bringing in Boxberger and his good changeup against a lefty pinch hitter in the ninth. Boxberger ultimately ended up getting all three of his outs against lefties, getting three strikeouts in the inning. He’s had a good start to his Cubs career, with just one run allowed in 6.1 innings of work.
