Bullpen Report: April 12, 2022

The 2022 version of Bullpen Report includes five different sections, as well as the closer chart, which can be found at the bottom of the page.

We will always include a link to the full Closer Depth Chart at the bottom of the Bullpen Report each day. It’s also accessible from the RosterResource drop-down menu and from any RosterResource page. Please let us know what you think.

  1. Notable Workloads: Primary closers or valuable members of a closer committee who have been deemed unavailable or likely unavailable for the current day due to recent workload.
  2. Injury News
  3. Outlier Saves: Explanation for a non-closer earning a save during the previous day.
  4. Committee Clarity: Notes on a closer committee that clarify a pitcher’s standing in the group.
  5. Losing A Grip: Struggling closers who could be on the hot seat.

The “RosterResource” link will take you to the corresponding team’s RosterResource depth chart, which will give you a better picture of the full bullpen and results of the previous six days (pitch count, save, hold, win, loss, blown save).

Notable Workloads

• Emmanuel Clase, CLE: 22 pitches on Monday. | RosterResource

Clase came into the ninth inning with a five-run lead on Monday. He walked the first batter he faced and then gave up a two-run home run to Andrew Benintendi. This comes only two days after recording the loss against the Royals on Saturday. It’s been a rocky start for the Clase, but it’s hard to judge only two outings. Bryan Shaw (11 pitches on Monday) or Nick Sandlin (14 pitches on Monday) are likely to get a save opportunity on Tuesday if one comes up and Clase needs rest.

Joe Barlow, TEX: 16 pitches on Monday, back-to-back days. | RosterResource

Closer Committee member Matt Bush threw 28 pitches on Monday and is also on “High Usage Alert”. Greg Holland threw 16 pitches in Monday’s contest but could be the go-to option in a save opportunity if it comes down to who is the most rested.

Injury News

Matt Barnes, BOS: back tightness | Roster Resource

Barnes threw 10 pitches in the sixth inning last night in Detroit. He gave up one hit and struck out one in a scoreless inning. It’s likely that Barnes will get some low-leverage opportunities to test out his back in the next few days, then he is a candidate to close out games. It’s assumed he’ll join a committee that includes Jake Diekman and Garrett Whitlock but could work his way into re-taking the closer role if he can stay healthy.

Outlier Saves

Ashton Goudeau, COL | Roster Resource

Alex Colomé gave up only one hit in the bottom of the eighth inning, keeping the game tied and setting himself up nicely for the win as the Rockies scored in the top of the ninth to take a 4-3 lead. That set the stage for Daniel Bard to record his second save of the season and begin to instill confidence as the closer. That did not happen as Bard gave up a home run to Willie Calhoun sending the game to extra innings. Colorado scored two in the top of the 10th and Goudeau shut the door in the bottom of the frame recording the win and oddly giving the win to Bard. Goudeau has been a peripheral prospect for some time now and doesn’t seem likely to play a major role in the backend of the bullpen.

Brad Hand, PHI | Roster Resource

Assumed closer Corey Knebel was out on Monday with flu-like symptoms and Hand was given the chance coming off two days of rest and likely just needing the work. Seranthony Domínguez, who recorded 16 saves in 2018 with the Phillies, came in to get the last out in the seventh and then pitched the full frame in the eighth. The Phillies put up five runs in the bottom of the frame, taking the lead and placing him in line for the win. Hand then closed it out in the ninth facing only three batters and striking out two. Hand has 127 career saves, so it’s hard to call this an outlier, but it will be interesting to see whether manager Joe Girardi spreads out the save opportunities amongst the many capable arms in the bullpen, or if he establishes a clear next-in-line when Knebel is out.

Kind of surprised Minn gets skipped again. 2 games that might be tips to who they are leaning towards. Duffey blows the save on the 9th then on the 11th he comes in to pitch the 7th with a 4 run lead. Joe Smith and Jhoan Duran took the 8th and 9th. Alcala was probably unavailable after throwing 27 pitches on Sunday

And don’t forget that Pagan is probably in the mix as well and frankly none of them have terribly exciting projections. That pen is going to take some time to sort itself out (Baldelli has said as much in print and included a couple other guys as candidates) and probably just goes to whoever gets off to a hot start. I’m holding Pagan but thinking I might have a better use for that roster spot.
