Brad Johnson Baseball Chat: 8/1/2017

Here’s today’s transcript, starting with some trade advice.

3:58
Brad Johnson: Ahoy there! I have a few excuses to make before we get started.

3:58
Brad Johnson: First, my laptop’s AC adapter caught fire last week so I’m on an old desktop. Typos may be a problem

3:59
Brad Johnson: Second, I am wearing a wrist brace to help a pitching injury heal. It gets in the way of typing. Thus, typos may be a problem

3:59
Brad Johnson: Now, let’s talk about trades before I take questions.

4:00
Brad Johnson: I would like to first answer questions regarding what I’m about to write, so stop spamming for a moment and fix your attention to me. I’m ignoring everything entered for now

4:00
Brad Johnson: We’re at the point in the season when lopsided trades really start to make sense.

4:01
Brad Johnson: I’ll use my 20 team dynasty league as an example

4:02
Brad Johnson: Chad Young and I are in 6th place, but we’re only 7.5 back from 3rd. In SB alone, we can gain 9 points with 20 steals. Since we added Betts, Taylor, and Mallex during the season, there’s a chance we’ll make up that ground

4:02
Brad Johnson: however, adding another source of steals will help ensure we get at least 5 of those points

4:03
Brad Johnson: so it can make sense to overpay for those swipes. We need a rare sort of player though – one who won’t expose our other categories while getting steals. A Jarrod Dyson won’t do

4:03
Brad Johnson: In this sort of format, we can draw on our minor league talent to bridge the gap

4:04
Brad Johnson: in a 12 team redraft, your options are more limited

4:04
Brad Johnson: every overpay is likely to hurt you in another category. Pay attention to net gain. What you give away matters. Also pay attention to how much you help your rivals. It’s always safer to trade with a team at the bottom of the standings.

4:05
Brad Johnson: ok, question time

4:05
a;sldkfj: I just bought a venus fly trap. What should I name it?

4:06
Brad Johnson: Taking suggestions, I’m partial to Don Delo Kaczinzski

4:06
Luke: Do you think Sano will pick up the pace again or is he in for a “Thames-style” drop off?

4:07
Brad Johnson: These are always hard to judge. With Thames, I think he just ran out of juice. The KBO schedule isn’t quite as rigorous

4:07
Brad Johnson: Young players like Sano can also run out of juice

4:08
Brad Johnson: what usually happens is 1. the stamina eventually catches up 2. injury 3. wait until next year

4:08
Brad Johnson: Sano will probably fall into one of those buckets. It’s a shame everybody hits a billion home runs though, really devalues the 80 grade power guys

4:08
a;sldkfj: Zack Godley is extremely underrated still I think. His surface numbers are good, but the underlying numbers are amazing as well

4:09
Brad Johnson: Yes

4:09
HarperIsKing: Miggy or Zimmerman ROS?

4:09
Brad Johnson: Miggy and it’s not close

4:09
Justin: traded Judge and Addison Reed for Kluber and Pollock. How did I do? (This was before the trade deadline)

4:09
Brad Johnson: Not a big fan, but it works. I assume this was a case of you having a big home run lead and needing SB/Ws

4:10
bob loblaw: name it kiermaier….cuz he catches all flies.

4:10
Brad Johnson: Baseball themed answer. I considered Trapper Cahill too

4:10
Brad Johnson: A plant should have at least a 2 part name and no more than 5 part

4:11
Brad Johnson: #NameGrades

4:11
Brad Johnson: Feel free to @NameGrades on twitter too. I forget to check it

4:11
Johnny5Alive: needed steals in NL only dynasty league, traded hernan perez and buehler for gordon.  in second, so i couldn’t really worry about how good buehler might be next year.  Like that?

4:11
Brad Johnson: A good example, assuming some money is at stake

4:12
Brad Johnson: I should point out, our chance to go from 6th to 3rd is worth something like $300. Even getting to 5th is $100.

4:12
Rick: I’m probably in H2H playoffs. No major weaknesses (lucky). I have Acuna on minors squad, and a couple non competing teams are hungry … what’s good to aim for in a return? I feel like Acuna’s value has yet to peak, especially among owners who don’t follow minor leaguers closely

4:13
Brad Johnson: I think you’re reading this right. It’s probably too soon to sell, the hype hasn’t caught up yet.

4:13
NukeLaloosh: When do we see Calhoun in TX?

4:13
Brad Johnson: Not very soon?

4:13
Brad Johnson: Their roster is pretty well set at this point

4:13
Brad Johnson: until somebody is hurt

4:14
Brad Johnson: nice 4 man OF rotation and a solid INF. Profar’s been blocked all year

4:14
JD: Andrew benintendi for Gregory Polanco in a dynasty, who wins? Both teams out of contention this year

4:14
Brad Johnson: I like Benintendi more

4:14
Mark: Willie Calhoun looks like hes ready for the Show, any chance he gets a shot? I need help at 2B and I’m in a 10 team dynasty.

4:14
Brad Johnson: There’s a shot, but I just don’t see the path. 1B maybe?

4:14
Frank: What do you see coming from Albies? Would you take him over Villar?

4:15
Brad Johnson: I’m not an Albies fan for fantasy purposes. I don’t see much potential for production

4:15
Brad Johnson: He’s the type of guy who could just suddenly get a lot better

4:15
Brad Johnson: right now, I’d compare him to a lesser version of Francisco Lindor when he entered the league

4:15
Brad Johnson: I use Lindor because he spontaneously improved

4:16
John C.: Brad not sure if you do any h2h leagues but if you do, how do you keep an even keel over the course of the year? I’m in a 14 tm league and in 2nd in both h2h and roto but I tend to live and die with each plate appearance at times and there are some weeks or even some days where I question whether or not I have the slightest clue or if I should find a new hobby.

4:17
Brad Johnson: I have one H2H league. My philosophy is to spend every single dollar on pitching. It’s worked very well this year. So many free bats to carry the offense, auto-winning nearly every pitcher category

4:17
Brad Johnson: When I try to draft offense AND pitching, bad things happen

4:17
99: Next year is Brad Peacock a starter or reliever?

4:17
Brad Johnson: yes

4:18
Brad Johnson: In all seriousness, he’s probably a swing starter. I don’t recall if he’s a free agent

4:18
Brad Johnson: he’s been around long enough for that to be possible, lemme check

4:19
Brad Johnson: Nope, Astros will want him in the 6 slot

4:19
NukeLaloosh: Does calhoun’s outlook change in Arlington where he can DH?

4:19
Brad Johnson: Personally, I wouldn’t be looking to DH him just yet

4:19
Brad Johnson: If anything, maybe 1B with Gallo back to Triple-A

4:19
Brad Johnson: I like having all 4 of their OF in the lineup vs. RHP

4:20
Brad Johnson: can get a guy like Calhoun DH reps against LHP

4:20
Putin esca: Pretty beat up and fighting for the last playoff spot.  Correa won’t be back until playoffs.  My rendon/Correa/Fulmer for his Betts/smoak/pomeranz?  I need steals and outfield help.

4:20
Brad Johnson: I like this gamble

4:20
Brad Johnson: given your stated needs

4:20
John: Who is going to pick up the save chances for Minn now that kintzler got traded?

4:21
Brad Johnson: Taylor Rogers and Matt Belisle seem to be front of the line

4:21
Scuba Steve: Is Acuna worth a stash now in keeper leagues?

4:21
Brad Johnson: Depends on the rules. If MiLB guys are nearly free, sure

4:21
Brad Johnson: Could really fill up the stat sheet

4:21
Brad Johnson: the coveted 5 category monster

4:22
Matt Barnes: What do you expect from Derek Fisher ROS? Should I make sure my wife stays clear of him?

4:22
Brad Johnson: Really impressed to this point, showing everything you could possibly want from a player like him

4:23
Brad Johnson: If we could go to a fantasy world where Bellinger and Fisher both had 40 PA, I’d take Fisher

4:23
Thanks for the chat!: At what point do you feel comfortable with your projected lead? I’m projecting to win by >700 points in Ottoneu, but injuries have hit me of late and my actual lead is down to a couple hundred points (can be covered with a really good day). Go big on a trade or stand pat?

4:24
Brad Johnson: I try to keep a 500 point buffer. The bigger the lead, the better though. Anything you can do to demoralize the competition will help to make up for slumps and Kershaw dying on you

4:24
Brad Johnson: ahem, me

4:24
Luck Dragons: How do you feel about Billy Hamilton and Bud Norris for Rivero, Nola, and Marte?

4:24
Brad Johnson: I feel pretty damn good about it

4:25
Brad Johnson: I feel like you’re making a mistake taking the time to ask me

4:25
Isaac: Kitten Mittens for the fly trap.

4:25
Brad Johnson: Love it!

4:25
Scuba Steve: Do you see the Indians calling up Mejia in Sep?

4:26
Brad Johnson: I don’t recall if he’s Rule 5 eligible in the offseason, if so, he probably gets to be the 3rd catcher just to get a taste

4:26
Brad Johnson: if not, then no

4:26
Brad Johnson: they have a postseason to prepare for

4:26
Luck Dragons: Contreras or Realmuto?

4:26
Brad Johnson: Realmuto

4:26
Brad Johnson: Contreras is suddenly quite iffy. Alex Avila is probably better than him

4:27
Korben Dallas: Which SS would you prefer ROS: Semien, Russell, or Arcia?

4:27
Brad Johnson: Gimme Semien

4:27
Luck Dragons: Neris/Doolittle/Rosenthal or Herrera/Giles/Hand?

4:27
Brad Johnson: Absolutely Hand

4:27
Brad Johnson: not even remotely close

4:27
Brad Johnson: super lopsided

4:27
Micah: Do we see Acuna in Atlanta this season?

4:27
Brad Johnson: The Braves do like to be a little splashy. It might happen

4:28
Zach: Who to hold between Taylor Rogers and Brandon Kintzler? Need saves.

4:28
Brad Johnson: Kintzler

4:28
mike: Thames for Samardzija if you needed SP?

4:28
Brad Johnson: Seems like you should be able to get slightly better. Like Lester quality

4:28
Brad Johnson: but if that’s the best out there and you need it…

4:28
Scuba Steve: Current minor leaguer that you stash now for keeper leagues?

4:28
Brad Johnson: I just grabbed a bunch of shares of Carter Capps

4:29
Brad Johnson: he’s looking like himself again

4:29
John: I need to trade Syndergaard for anyone at this point, right? Even if he comes back in September, how can I trust him & his rust in the playoffs?

4:29
Brad Johnson: re-draft? Yea, check the offers

4:29
Bart: Orlando Arcia or Rosario – need SS help in a 10 team dynasty league.

4:30
Brad Johnson: Rosario? Should be able to grab a Galvis if that doesn’t pan out

4:30
Burt Reynolds: ime to drop kinsler in 10 teamers? he’s the king of useless fly balls right now

4:30
Brad Johnson: Kinsler should be owned in a 10 teamer, but not necessarily by you

4:30
Brad Johnson: and he’s the kind of guy who you don’t need to squeeze for a return – you won’t get anything

4:31
John C.: Please tell me at some point Miggy is going to catch fire and his actual production will match his xstats

4:31
Brad Johnson: So I assume

4:31
Punk in Drublic: Stuck and not sure what to do. 16 team H2H dynasty and in 4th place (can keep up to 9 every yr) would you trade benintendi for miggy??

4:31
Brad Johnson: No

4:31
weezy: Think Sano’s worth keeping on my roster in a 12 team OBP keeper at $19? I really like his long term prospects but want to win now

4:31
Brad Johnson: Depends what you’re trading for. Should look for a comparable keeper.

4:31
Skeeter: Who’s the closer in Texas? Is Kela even healthy? Their usage of him has been pretty odd. He logged a 0.2 IP hold on 7/22, didn’t pitch 7/23 in a 1-run W, pitched 8th inning in a blowout on 7/25 and hasn’t pitched since.

4:31
Brad Johnson: Alex Claudio

4:31
Snowflake: Calhoun would have to be the shortest 1B ever right?

4:32
Brad Johnson: I suppose there is that… I just can’t imagine him squeezing in anywhere else besides DH

4:32
Bart: How much playing time will J Candelario get in Detroit?

4:32
Brad Johnson: Unless I missed the announcement of him moving to the OF, none

4:33
Brad Johnson: He’s behind Castellanos, Miggy, and VMart

4:33
Johnny5Alive: how much does kintzler kill my doolittle pick up? I am out of FAAB money

4:33
Brad Johnson: you’re covered in gore

4:33
Kevin: Expectations for Amed ROS? Or would you flip him now to an owner excited about his potential?

4:33
Brad Johnson: FLIP

4:33
Elroy: You really think Gallo is going to go back to AAA? Doesn’t he have the second highest OBP on the team?

4:34
Brad Johnson: I’m trying to build scenarios where Calhoun fits on the roster

4:34
Brad Johnson: it’s not easy

4:34
Mr.Brad Hand: Rank ’em…M. Smith, Leonis Martin, Albies, Tapia, PIrela. Thanks!

4:34
Brad Johnson: One of my ottoneu teams is named Brad’s Hand

4:34
Brad Johnson: Also, Smith is the only one worth owning in all but the deepest leagues

4:34
Brad Johnson: Maybe Albies surprises

4:35
Brad Johnson: Tapia doesn’t play enough, Pirela has faded

4:35
Brad Johnson: I suppose Pirela makes enough contact to have another lucky hot streak

4:35
Robert: Dominic Smith: value this year? Beyond?

4:35
Brad Johnson: minimal, moderate

4:35
Snowflake: There’s one guy in my league who thinks that every trade offer is the worst ever. Takes them all personally. I’ve been getting quite a bit of enjoyment by offering him ridiculous trades every week to see what kind of insults he hurls back.

4:36
Rain dogs: My Nelson Cruz for his Justin Turner and Jordan Montgomery?

4:36
Brad Johnson: Sure, I assume you need a 3B and have excess OF

4:36
bob loblaw: you don’t see a lot of steals from Albies ROS?  or in the future?  i thought he could steal 50+ in his best year(s)

4:36
Brad Johnson: I kind of see him as Billy Hamilton with half the steals

4:37
Mark: I have Lewis Brinson, drop him for Fisher? I’m hesitating bc Brinson can steal a base if needed.

4:37
Brad Johnson: Yes. So can Fisher

4:37
Jad Brohnson: Dump Kintzler, or does he have a shot to close for Nats?

4:37
Brad Johnson: I’m pretty sure he’ll close for them

4:37
Brad Johnson: like 95%

4:38
Blue JA: Is David Dahl fantasy relevant in redraft in 2017?

4:38
Brad Johnson: Sure would be a surprise at this point

4:38
Brad Johnson: I’ll go with no

4:38
Kershaw Deficient: Lost Kershaw, McCullers, and Ray on the DL and falling in pitching cats. Who out of Gausman, Davies, Chacin, or Marquez is the best stop gap?

4:38
Brad Johnson: Gausman has a long history of second half dominance

4:38
Brad Johnson: can also use Marquez on the road

4:38
Minty: Gleyber, Robles, and Mejia shouldn’t be up until next year. How would you rank them in an OBP keeper?

4:38
Brad Johnson: Robles, Gleyber, Mejia

4:38
Devil Magic: How bout that Tommy Pham? I imagine you’ve revised the “should be on the wire in 85% of 12-teamers” notion?

4:39
Brad Johnson: I got so much crap for that…

4:39
Brad Johnson: Still think he should be streamable in half of leagues

4:39
Tom Guerrero: Does Andrew Pullin profile as a starting outfielder after a strong ’16 and ’17?

4:39
Brad Johnson: No

4:40
Brad Johnson: He may find himself on the MLB roster soon, but he won’t leapfrog Williams/Doobie/Altherr

4:40
Brad Johnson: Not to mention Quinn if he’s ever healthy

4:40
Brad Johnson: He’s also not hitting well at Triple-A

4:41
Brad Johnson: They’ll also probably have Cesar Hernandez in a super utility role at some point

4:41
Ray Liotta as Shoeless Joe: What do you know about Willson Contreras that I don’t? His last month has run a .400 OBP with almost 50 total bases. He’s batting lead-off half the time.

4:41
Brad Johnson: He has to split time with Alex Avila now

4:41
Brad Johnson: that’s all

4:42
Oddball Herrera: Mejia is on the 40 man

4:42
Brad Johnson: There’s an answer to an earlier question. We’ll probably see him play a game or three in September

4:42
A. Reitz: Avila better than Contreras?!?!?!  Avila is a career ‘meh’ and Contreras is easily a Top 5 C, already…

4:43
Brad Johnson: These are rather bold takes. Throw out Avila’s offensive history, it’s not very relevant now

4:43
Brad Johnson: He’s a good defender with a big walk rate and power

4:44
Brad Johnson: And I’m not buying Contreras as an “easy” top 5 C. Certainly can argue he has the 4th or 5th spot

4:44
Brad Johnson: can argue otherwise too without being wrong

4:44
Dougie Jones: rank the new closers: Greene, Ziegler, Treinen, [Twins guy]

4:45
Brad Johnson: Greene, Treinen, Twins, Marlins

4:45
Brad Johnson: Zieg’s had issues this year, could see Phelps step in

4:45
Snowflake: Do you trust Ziegler to keep the closer job?

4:45
Brad Johnson: See above

4:45
Mean Tweeter: Avila better than Contreras? Avila has fallen off since his fast start while Contreras has taken off the past 2 months.

4:45
Brad Johnson: Avila falling off still includes a huge OBP

4:45
Coppy: Sims starting tonight for Atlanta. Projections are very bullish on him. Your thoughts this year and beyond?

4:46
Brad Johnson: I’m wary of the command

4:46
Brad Johnson: He was a 6.00 BB/9 guy before this season

4:46
Brad Johnson: I think we’ll see that return in the majors. If it doesn’t he could be quite useful

4:46
Brad Johnson: my advice is to stash but not use

4:46
Prospects: How do you feel about Zimmer vs. Inciarte vs. Fisher as a keeper?  12 team H2H 5×5? Fisher > Zimmer> Inciarte??

4:46
Brad Johnson: You ordered it the way I would

4:46
Brad Johnson: All nice players to have though

4:47
Brad Johnson: Fisher can be a star while the other two are core guys

4:47
JT: Is Altherr this good? Thought his BA would have gone down by now.

4:47
Brad Johnson: Lemme refresh myself on his stats

4:48
Brad Johnson: I’d expect .270/.350/.530 or so

4:48
Ray Liotta as Shoeless Joe: It’s going to be hard for Phelps to pitch for the Marlins when he’s out in Seattle.

4:49
Brad Johnson: Shucks…knew there was a reason he wasn’t already the closer

4:49
Brad Johnson: I guess Bearclaw is the guy then

4:49
Tim: Any chance Tazawa gets a crack?

4:49
Brad Johnson: Sure, chances abound

4:49
DW: Any news on Springer?? His uncertainty is holding up a trade in our league (deadline is Thursday).

4:49
Brad Johnson: You probably know as much as I do

4:50
Brad Johnson: I own 0 shares so I don’t pay much attention to him

4:50
Matt: Dynasty league – traded Trea Turner, Stroman, and some minor league draft picks (including 2 first rounders) for rental Darvish, rental Kimbrel, some later round picks, and Conforto. Turner and Conforto at same contract. Stroman at similar contract. Did I do good?

4:51
Brad Johnson: If they’re going to win you a championship (or at least  more money), then it could be worthwhile

4:51
Brad Johnson: parting with Turner hurts though…

4:51
Tom Guerrero: Is Maikel Franco this bad? Thought his BA would have gone up by now.

4:52
Brad Johnson: Not enough hard contact

4:52
Brad Johnson: He needs to have an epiphany

4:54
Brad Johnson: ok I’m back, Chrome crashed

4:55
Hannah Hochevar: Can you give me an AL player who equates with Trevor Cahill? In an AL only and trying to gauge his value with limited knowledge. Thanks!

4:55
Brad Johnson: Hmm, that’s pretty tricky. Cahill’s value is in flux right now

4:56
Brad Johnson: Manaea, Porcello, or Tanaka maybe?

4:56
Brad Johnson: Similar fluxy guys with upside basically

4:56
Bern: Are you liking Fisher more than Haniger at this point in a Dynasty?

4:57
Brad Johnson: Oh yes. Always yes

4:57
Brad Johnson: Even with at the height of his hot start, Haniger was never as valuable as Fisher in dynasty

4:57
dave in slc: in an nl only keeper league i have a shot at some money 3rd or 4th place but no shot at winning. would you trade a non keepable springer for bennitendi at $15? i may or may not fall out of the smaller money w the lesser player

4:57
Brad Johnson: I’d go for it

4:57
Brad Johnson: decent chance with the injury that Benintendi outperforms Springer anyway

4:58
Steve: Re: Pham – drop him for Reddick? H2H points

4:58
Brad Johnson: Can do if you judge you need run production more than HR/SB

4:58
Hannah Hochevar: Re: Cahill – another way to phrase it: assuming he’s more of a spot starter, what’s the best team you’d start him against?

4:59
Brad Johnson: I’d pretty much use him indiscriminately unless he keeps imploding

4:59
Tommy Shambles: Been offered Betts and Godley for my Pollock, Andrus, and Rosenthal. I have Rosario at SS waiting. Yay or nay?

4:59
Brad Johnson: redraft I assume? I think I’d do it as long as you’re comfortable giving that guy so many SB

5:00
Dipper Pines: Guess at a peak triple slash line for Fisher?

5:01
Brad Johnson: His current .317/.404/.610 would be a fine peak

5:01
Brad Johnson: More realistically, probably .280/.350/.560. It’s so hard to do this now that everybody is hitting home runs

5:02
Brad Johnson: Presumably, there will come a time when NOT everybody is hitting home runs

5:02
Oddball Herrera: Think Castellanos *ever* breaks into the top 10 3B?

5:02
Brad Johnson: Not really

5:02
Brad Johnson: Might hover around the periphery

5:02
SJ: Was offered Donaldson (rental) for Jake Lamb (10th round keeper). Lamb has been more productive this season, but worth the gamble on Donaldson ROS?

5:02
Brad Johnson: Keep Lamb

5:03
fkalwnejo: How much leash does Norris have now that’s he’s blown two big leads in spectacular fashion? Who would be the guy to own, Parker, Bedrosian?

5:03
Brad Johnson: Bedrosian first

5:03
Brad Johnson: they seem intent on keeping Parker away from saves

5:03
Jimmy: Betts/Trea for Lindor/Carrasco/Paxton/Chapman, 14tm H2H keeper, keep 6. Be sacrificing too much high-end keeper equity to win this year?

5:03
Brad Johnson: Does that get you the win? And how much money is at stake?

5:04
Brad Johnson: They could be perennial top 5 talents

5:04
Brad Johnson: and in a keep 6, you want as many 1st rounders as possible

5:04
Sterling Mallory Chris Archer: I need runs and RBIs but I’m torn on who is my full time UTIL in Dozier or Donaldson.  Josh hit a few HRs lately but Dozier also could get me a few SBs.  Whose the man?

5:05
Brad Johnson: Dozier hit half of his HR last season in August and September

5:05
Eric: You have Altherr as a .870 OPS true-talent guy? Wow. I shouldn’t have traded him for Devenski…

5:05
Brad Johnson: Maybe .800-.850 is more reasonable. Like I mentioned, it’s hard to do this now with the elevated scoring environment

5:06
Jarrett: Trade Lamb for DeGrom? Strong across Hitting and Pitching but figure hitting easier to replace than pitching.

5:06
Brad Johnson: Can do

5:06
Brad Johnson: hitting is easier to replace, but that’s because pitching evaporates

5:06
Brad Johnson: so there’s risk involved either way you slice it

5:06
Johnny5Alive: cueto pretty much done for the year at this point?

5:06
Brad Johnson: Seems like it

5:07
Skeeter: I thought Claudio was the closer, but then he threw 2.2 IP last night. You still think he’s the closer?

5:07
Brad Johnson: Well, it’s still committee time. Claudio’s their most trusted reliever at the moment

5:07
Brad Johnson: Pace of questions has slowed down if you’re still hanging around

5:08
Jimmy: Are $$ stakes that important or is a championship in an ongoing 15+years keeper league of equal value?

5:08
Brad Johnson: I’m all about the cash :0

5:08
Brad Johnson: Here’s how I look at it, I’ll move all in when a good chunk of change is at stake. Otherwise, I’m always going to balance my current and future needs

5:09
Brad Johnson: In a free or low entry league, I’m still going to do what I can to win, but I’ll be more hesitant to trade a big future asset for win-now materiel

5:10
Brad Johnson: Since production often comes from unexpected sources, I’ll instead focus on finding those sources

5:10
flamingo: Price’s ownership in ESPN has fallen 8% since he was put on the DL. This seems absurd and overreactive right? Or do they know something I don’t?

5:10
Brad Johnson: Probably just some super shallow formats

5:10
Turp: ROS outlook for Nunez in Boston?  standard 5×5

5:10
Brad Johnson: Quite good? I traded Odubel Herrera for him this morning

5:10
Brad Johnson: To replace Jose Peraza who I finally cut

5:11
Tim: To follow up on Claudio – doesn’t seem like he’s got that fabled closer ‘stuff.’ Don’t think LeClerc gets first look? (Assuming Kela is still not quite there yet)

5:11
Brad Johnson: Claudio has the Britton/Kintzler profile

5:11
Brad Johnson: pre-breakout Britton that is

5:11
Brad Johnson: he closed for the Orioles, if you’ll recall

5:12
Ken: I’ve been getting by on saves with an ugly collection of arms. Think Dyson keeps the job RoS? What about Norris?

5:12
Brad Johnson: Melancon has started a rehab stint, so no

5:12
Brad Johnson: Norris needs to rebound fast

5:12
Pete: Sorry I know this is like the third time someone has asked but why are you so confident kintzler will be closer in Washington ?

5:13
Brad Johnson: Was told they were only looking to acquire a closer

5:13
Eric: You should join the Rosenheck league next year.

5:13
Brad Johnson: I remember looking into it and deciding against it for some reason. Remind me what that was…

5:13
JT: Does Margot settle in as a .280-.300 hitter?

5:14
Brad Johnson: Never bet on anyone batting .300. Except for the superstars

5:14
dustyfingers: Altherr or Fisher ROS?

5:14
Brad Johnson: I want to say Fisher, but Altherr is the safer bet

5:14
Daniel Castro Fan Club: Is Justin Wilson immediately droppable now? Even in a league that counts saves+holds?

5:14
Brad Johnson: Yep

5:14
JD Martin: Altherr has posted really weird splits this year; much better K/BB rates vs. LHP and higher IFFB% (with same FB%), but higher LD% and better overall production vs. RHP.  Just an all around tricky guy to evaluate, especially since his injured 2016 drags down his projections

5:14
Brad Johnson: Don’t worry about the splits yet. Sample’s too small

5:15
Ken: Any buy-low starters you’re targeting lately? I, like just about everyone, have a few injuries and could use an extra arm or two.

5:15
Brad Johnson: If your league is deep and you have the room, Tyler Chatwood is a beast on the road

5:15
Brad Johnson: he’s back in business

5:15
Brad Johnson: just never start him at home

5:16
Dan: Thoughts on Bregman? Seems the FG staff is a little across the board on him.

5:16
Brad Johnson: I like him long term

5:16
Brad Johnson: I don’t mind moving on for this season if you have access to comparable talent

5:16
trader Joe: I have Quintana and Duffy SP, he has Davis and Herrera RP, whats the offer from me?

5:17
Brad Johnson: Quintana + throw-in for both to open. 2-for-2 should be enough.

5:17
Brad Johnson: Assuming he’s willing to trade a closer or two

5:17
Brad Johnson: might be a non-starter from the get go

5:17
Frank: Is the old Trevor Cahill back? I know it’s only the last 2 starts but walks are back/Ks down.

5:17
Brad Johnson: It’s a risk, monitor accordingly

5:18
Tom Guerrero: Thoughts on trading my odor for Quintana in a dynasty format at the deadline? Got a mid round pick included with Quint, but it wasn’t a big factor.

5:18
Brad Johnson: I’m ok with it, but I’m one of the most pessimistic when it comes to Odor.

5:18
Brad Johnson: This is kind of an “I told you so” year from him

5:18
Brad Johnson: he’ll have more good years too though

5:18
Ray Liotta as Shoeless Joe: How many steals does AJ Pollock nab off of Jon Lester tonight?

5:19
Brad Johnson: Welly starting? I’ll go with zero

5:19
Dan: So my league just saw Jose Ramirez/Betances go for Gardner/Rivero. I think it was on the up-and-up, if quite lopsided. Just how upset should I be?

5:19
Brad Johnson: Seems fine to me

5:20
Brad Johnson: So this gets at what we discussed way back at 4pm

5:20
Brad Johnson: When you get down to the actual stats involved, there are a ton of scenarios where the Gardner/Rivero side looks better

5:20
Brad Johnson: but our instinct is to just see the two best players in the deal going to the same team

5:21
Brad Johnson: Time for me to wrap it up, I have rosters to set.

5:21
Eric: Eno didn’t like it because of the trades (hundreds throughout the year, including creative rentals of varying lengths, etc.) and FA adds (no waivers). In short, it’s a high-commitment league.

5:21
Brad Johnson: This is re: the Rosenheck league

5:21
Brad Johnson: I remember it now

5:22
Brad Johnson: thing was rigged to favor whoever best understood the weird rules

5:22
Brad Johnson: I didn’t feel like playing that game

5:22
Brad Johnson: also whoever could find and exploit the guy who didn’t understand

5:23
George: Hi! Keeper league…D. Swanson or the soon to be called up Dom Smith?  Tks.

5:23
Brad Johnson: probably Smith? I don’t feel strongly about that

5:23
Matt: Nunez good? Is he going to get full playing time over Devers?

5:23
Brad Johnson: Pedroia just hit the DL, Nunez’ll play for a bit

5:23
flamingo: Is Nola a buy [somewhat] high guy for ROS?

5:23
Brad Johnson: yes

5:24
Brad Johnson: and now it’s time to say goodbye

5:24
Frank: What happened to Cole Calhoun?

5:24
Brad Johnson: Good question. I can only shrug.

5:24
Julius: Drop Todd Frazier for Devers or Fisher?

5:24
Brad Johnson: Can do

5:24
SJ: We gonna see updated positional rankings on rotographs? Some positions (ie 3b) have not been updated since season start.

5:24
Brad Johnson: No idea

No offense, but Gallo back to AAA? Cmon. 2+ war already this year, do you automatically expect Calhoun back to produce 3 war out of the DH spot? Odor has produced .5 WAR. Obviously no chance they send him down, but you are high if you think Odor>Gallo. Calhoun will get his time, there are always at bats for guys who can hit.
