Business As Usual: Nothing actionable

  • Lucas Giolito, Frankie Montas, Freddy Peralta, Luis Severino, Cal Quantrill, Carlos Carrasco, Tony Gonsolin (still too many BB, lucky it was PIT), Alex Wood, Aaron Nola

Notable Gems: The standouts who merit some extra attention

  • It wasn’t the most dominant no-hitter for Reid Detmers. No one is complaining, though! Just 1 walk with 2 Ks, 14 flyouts, and 11 groundouts to get the job done on 108 pitches. It will likely lead to a surge in roster rate (8% Y!, 4% ESPN), but I’m not sure it necessarily should as he wasn’t particularly dominant and still looks like a shallow league streamer. He gets a trip to TEX next week so it’s fine to pick him up, but a no-no doesn’t substantially change a pitcher’s outlook, especially one that doesn’t really feature true dominance.
  • Speaking of no-no’s, Justin Verlander was chasing his 4th on Tuesday night, but a clean single to right by Gio Urshela ended his bid an out into the 8th. Five pitches later, he induced a double play from Royce Lewis to cap off a beautiful 8 IP/1 H/0 ER/2 BB/5 K showing. A little light on Ks, but the efficiency of finishing 8 strong on 89 pitches is awesome.
  • Kyle Bradish showed his minor league swing-and-miss on Tuesday night with 11 Ks and 14 swinging strikes. Both his mid-90s heater (5 Ks) and mid-80s slider (6 Ks) were on fire in his seven strong innings. The Harrison Bader inside-the-park homer was the only real damage. Bradish sets up for a 2-step next week at home against NYY and TB.
  • Tarik Skubal has been fantastic this year with just a 0.5 HR/9 and he has greatly improved against righties with a 103-point drop in OPS against them down to .692 in 109 PA. He remains a must-start.
  • Alex Faedo showed off some of his minor league swing-and-miss with a big 7 K game. If he is going to miss bats consistently, he can be a solid team streamer. He was once a legit prospect, but injuries have slowed his ascent.
  • This was the first glimpse of Cy Young Robbie Ray as he rode a season-high 20% SwStr rate to his 10-K effort.
  • Another gem for Yusei Kikuchi, this time in the Bronx. His death schedule (at NYY, at BOS, at HOU, HOU, NYY, at NYY) lightens up some as he kicks it into gear with a 2-step at home against CIN and SEA.
  • Patrick Corbin has allowed 59% of his earned runs in two disastrous starts, posting a 2.86 ERA in the other outings. The question is, do you feel like you can properly choose when to start him? The bad ones were avoidable enough at ATL and v. SF, but he also just allowed a 2.08 ERA in 13 IP at COL and v. NYM. Good luck if you play with this fireball.
  • This will end with Martín Pérez. It’s a heater driven heavily by a .203 AVG and 0% HR/FB. It’s just a matter of whether it will be gradual or all at once, but it is coming. A home start v. LAA and trip to HOU next could do the trick.
  • Adrian Martinez looked solid in his debut and could be a useful streamer in OAK. He was part of the Sean Manaea return and feels like one of those Oakland pitchers who can leverage the home park and some solid-average skills into a lot of useful outings. He has shown consistent 12-13% SwStr rates through the minors and if he can miss a bat per inning, there could be some shallow league viability here, too. I get some 2021 James Kaprielian vibes here in terms of a statistical profile.

Decent Enough: Basically, biz as usual, but with some extra insight

  • Mike Clevinger – Velo was up about a tick on the 4S (+0.7 to 94.7) and CT (+0.9 to 89.9) and he went 91 pitches. He obviously must stay healthy, but they don’t seem to be holding him back so once he’s fully ramped up, he could be consistently going 6 IP.
  • Garrett Whitlock – Labored through a 32-pitch first inning and it kind of sullied the outing from the jump. Another 32-pitch inning in the third was the nail in the coffin. I’m not worried and if this leads to any cuts in shallower formats, I’d jump instantly.

Duds: The worst of the day

  • Kyle Wright – Opened with a 9-pitch inning then a 30-pitch meltdown when all 6 runs were scored, including a Rafael Devers grand slam. Boston’s offense isn’t staying at 24th in wRC+ v. righties all year. Mostly just a really bad inning for Wright. I’m not concerned.
  • Corey Kluber – This meltdown essentially spoiled all the good work done in his first five. No velo or spin drops here, he just didn’t have and was blasted around the yard by a great lineup, or at least a great half with Marsh, Trout, Ohtani, Rendon, and Walsh.
  • Joe Ryan – Two bad starts fueled by a loss of control (4, 5 BB). He had three walks in 23.7 across his other four starts. Just seems like an off outing as opposed to reason for major concern, especially given the opponent strength.
  • Jesús Luzardo – Feels like a pretty standard off game that a below average command arm will face on occasion.
  • Antonio Senzatela – He was bound for an outing for like this when he allows sooo much contact (6% K rate). Yes, his .405 BABIP is crazy, but he plays a role when the ball in play that often. It puts an unsustainable burden on the defense and while this game wasn’t there, his home park exacerbates this issue.
  • Brad Keller – Not quite as extreme as Senzatela, but same sort of vibe where the downside is these kind of week-ruining outings because of how often they allow contact.
  • Wade Miley – Returning from the IL with no spring, I’m going to keep an eye on him because he regularly delivers mixed league fantasy value for months at a time.
