MASH Report (6/12/14)

The data is a little thin today. My RSS reader is down/under attack so I had to go old school and check as many websites as I could manually.

Carlos Gonzalez had a “fatty mass with tentacles” or a “Cheeto” or a “shrimp” removed from his hand. Which ever  it was, it is probably good it is no longer in his hand.

• After scoring a 158 the last time I ran my PAIN report, Francisco Liriano now heads to the DL with an oblique stain. These core injuries for pitchers usually take about two months to heal.

• The Rangers have just been snake bitten with injuries. Tanner Scheppers is back on the DL and Jim Adduci re-broke his finger on a minor league rehab assignment. Grantland’s Jonah Keri looked in detail at the Rangers struggles to stay healthy.

Adam Wainwright is dealing with some elbow discomfort, but an MRI revealed no damage. His cutter is down 2 mph. I will closely monitor his next start.

Mat Latos is supposed to throw Saturday for the Reds. If given the chose, I would not start him then. Too many setbacks and delays in this return to be 100% healthy. Try to get some baseline data (velocity) from the start and decide if it is worth starting him later in the week.

Matt Harvey was finally convinced he will not throw in 2014.

Alex Cobb is endorsing protective headgear for pitchers. I really don’t see it catching on in the majors. I think it will have to required/used with youth who are used to it as they age.

Fastball Velocity Watch for Pitchers Returning From the DL

J.J. Putz’s fastball velocity is down a 2 mph compared to last season.

Jordan Walden’s velcoity is also down 2 mph from earlier in the season.

What do you make of Gerrit Cole’s trip to the DL? He scored a -29 on your last PAIN report. Are they just giving him a rest or might there really be an injury there?

I think they’re following the concept that stress when fatigued increases likelihood of longer term injury. Plus it’s a convenient way for him to limit IP and refresh his arm a bit. They aren’t going anywhere this year, so it’s best to take it cautiously. (Might also want him to work a bit on some offspeed stuff, or mechanical adjustments…)

I could see this type of mid-season prevention catching on. Instead of limiting a pitcher by IP/season, or Pitches/Start, let them stretch it out a little and give them a month off mid-season (due to “fatigue”) to let the ligaments heal back up from the stress and damage of the first part of the season.
