2018 Top 100 Fantasy Prospects: First Look

About a year ago I released my (2017) Top 50 Fantasy Prospect rankings using the Prospect Scorecard to weight a variety of important variables in the context of fantasy baseball.  Today I’m publishing an (early) expanded list of the Top 100 Fantasy Prospects for 2018 for both Ottoneu’s FanGraphs Points leagues (where wOBA is a key measure on offense) and Roto leagues (5 x 5).

A few quick notes before we begin:

  • Since “Cost” is league-dependent (auction salary, keeper round, etc.), I’ve ignored it here for simplicity by keeping it constant for every prospect listed. Feel free to use the Scorecard to make changes that reflect true player costs for your league, which will impact these rankings.
  • These rankings below are intended to represent the 100 most valuable prospects for fantasy leagues (depending on scoring format).
  • It’s quite possible I’m missing an obvious player that should be ranked, so let me know in the comments.  We can discuss the specific rationale for player rankings in the comments, too.  Player ages are current ages.

Nice list. I think the top looks good. After that, I would just be being opinionated for the sake of doing so. Good work!

Trey is there a way to get ahold of you directly in the forums? I was looking over the dynasty leagues that you put together (836 &837). You need to put together a 5×5 dynasty. Id love to join one.

Or do you know of a place for a 5×5 format? Either way, great work with the list. Appreciate the content when not much is being generated during this time of the year.

Thanks for the feedback. I don’t usually play 5 x 5 but you could probably post your interest in joining or forming a similar dynasty league here. Most new leagues will form in December/January as people start looking towards 2018.

Just to be clear, is this a list of prospects you think will have an impact in the 2018 season? Or is this just a comprehensive ranking of current prospects?

This is not a list ranked in order of 2018 impact. Instead, it’s a list of the best prospects in the minors according to this method, which tries to account for their value in fantasy (FGPTS & Roto).

I like Keibert Ruiz but in general I’d say the value of catchers is somewhat deflated using this method because they often take a little longer to develop offensively (“impact”) in MLB. Ruiz probably would have landed in the 125 – 135 range.

Thanks Trey! Where would you roughly put the line in terms of rostering prospects at $5, $3, $1, etc.? Of course in understand that’s somewhat league-specific, but just curious about how you view prospect value in ottoneu.

Great question. Since Acuna is the rare prospect that is both elite and right on the doorstep of the majors, I’d probably feel pretty comfortable carrying him in the $7-$9 range heading into 2018 auctions (similar to Moncada values last year). I’d put Eloy (2) – Verdugo (20) in the $4-$6 range, but would move the needle up or down a bit depending how prospect crazy your league tends to be. I’d have Brinson (21) – Urias (50) in the $1-$3 range probably. After that it gets tricky as there are a lot of pitchers mixed in with interesting bats that are sort of close to MLB (O’Neill, Calhoun, Jansen, Sisco, Kelly, Shaw, etc.) but it’s unclear how much impact they will have unless they hit right out of the gate (which is rare). I’ve tried to account for that salary factor somewhat in the “Hype” category. So a guy like Taylor Trammel (76) is still a ways from MLB but I feel like he’s got some helium in the industry heading into next season, so he may be kept or auctioned on the high side of that $1-$3 scale. Every league is different, so these ranges are just estimates. This article on Prospect Classes in Ottoneu is a good resource, too.
