Five Starting Pitchers With Strikeout Rate Upside

It’s been a little while since I last used my xK% equation to identify pitchers with strikeout rate upside. So now that we’re about a third of the way into the season, it’s time to take another look. The five pitchers discussed below all have xK% marks well above their actual K% marks. My equation isn’t perfect, of course, just like all formulas that act as skill estimators, but it should work pretty well at the extremes at predicting the direction of future stat changes.

Pedro Strop replaced Hector Rondon on Saturday after Rondon walked the leadoff hitter in the ninth. Joe Maddon refused to anoint Strop as the Cubs new closer, but you should definitely monitor this situation and don’t be shy about picking up Strop if he’s available.

Bullpen Report: Friday, June 5, 2015

Now is likely the time to pick up Rafael Soriano. The Blue Jays have reportedly been sniffing around him, and while watching the Braves bullpen give up another fistful of runs, you’d think they’d be in the mix as well if the price is right. The Braves pen has the worst ERA in the majors and didn’t help their case on Friday, as they combined to give up six runs in four innings of work. Mark Melancon induced a game-ending double play out of A.J. Pierzynski, but he threw the comebacker into center field to put runners on the corners. He was able to get another game-ending double play, but this time made sure it was hit at an infielder, notching his 17th save.

Stream, Stream, Stream: #2xSP (6.8-6.14)

Well we’ve made some headway in the ERA department, but the record is going to be a season-long battle and ideally we’d get the rates to about league average. At this moment, that’d be a 7.7 mark in K/9, 2.6 K/BB and a WHIP of 1.28. In short, there’s still a lot of work to do around here. This week’s recommendations each have a really tough start right out of the gate, so here’s to hoping that’ll bring out the best in their competitive spirits.

Here are the totals through half of week seven:

8-26 record
5.42 ERA
6.0 K/9
2.1 K/BB
1.44 WHIP

Here’s a look at this week’s recs, with team wOBA in parentheses. Y! ownership numbers pulled courtesy of twitter pal @PandaPete21, whom you should give a follow:
