Impact Prospect Rankings: Catchers

I began the year at RotoGraphs by producing a semi-regularly-updated Top 25 prospects list. For the second half of the year and into the offseason, I’ll be rotating expanded Top 10, 12 or 15 lists (on a far more regular basis) by position: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF/RF, CF, RHSP (tier 1), RHSP (tier 2), LHSP. Whether you play traditional formats of fantasy baseball or dynasty/keeper styles (or you’re just a prospect nut like me), you’ll surely find these lists indispensable. Differences in Daily Scoring Systems — Hitters

Unless you live under a rock, you’re likely aware that DraftStreet was recently bought out by DraftKings. Given that this time slot was previously designated for the discussion of daily strategy for Draftstreet contests, I’ve got to come up with some new material. But I’m going to milk the DraftStreet cow for all it’s worth and draw on it as a source of material for one more week. Because you can no longer play on Draftstreet, I want to take a look at how the scoring systems differ on the two sites you most likely transferred your money to, DraftKings and FanDuel. Today we’ll look at how the differing scoring systems affect hitters. Read the rest of this entry »

Trading Scherzer (aka, the Difficulties of Valuing an Ace)

I own Max Scherzer in three leagues right now. Three different formats, three different sets of rules, and three different places in the standings. And I am working on trading him in not one, but two.

The problem is trying to find the right value. And valuing a guy like Scherzer is not easy.

The xBABIP Target List

On Friday, Jeff Zimmerman published the calculated xBABIP marks using his new equation incorporating Inside Edge data. While we are well aware that we remain far away from a perfect xBABIP equation as some commenters pointed out what’s missing, it’s still a useful metric to analyze. So I have curated a list of hitters whose xBABIP marks are significantly higher than their actuals and could represent good acquisition targets for the final two months of the season.

Roto Riteup — Presented By DraftKings: July 28, 2014

Today is s the 15th anniversary of Destiny’s Child “The Writing’s on the Wall” album being released here in the United States. The track Say My Name is a personal favorite song of mine from the era and is something I’m not too shy to admit I belt out whenever I hear it. To ago along with this middle school nostalgia, I have some thoughts on several middle infielders today.

On today’s agenda:
1. A big day for Josh Harrison
2. Platooning DJ LeMahieu
3. Tommy La Stella is still hitting, still available
4. Jedd Gyorko to be activated today
5. The daily five

Stream, Stream, Stream: 2x SP 7.28-8.3

First a look at the running totals through week 15 (and an apology for being extremely late this week due to a 10-year high school reunion):

30-20 record
3.93 ERA
7.5 K/9
2.7 K/BB
1.31 WHIP

Here’s a look at this week’s recs, with team wOBA in parentheses:

Nathan Eovaldi – 13.7% ESPN/22% Y!/55% own, 28% start CBS – v. WAS (.312), v. PIT (.320)

The Eovaldi rec is a tough one, as he’s gotten absolutely rocked in his last five starts (0-3, 6.39 ERA, and just 14 strikeouts in 31 innings). Read the rest of this entry »

RotoGraphs Audio: The Sleeper and the Bust 07/27/2014

Episode 147

The latest episode of “The Sleeper and the Bust” is now live! Jason Collette and Nicholas Minnix discuss, among other things, the Jake Peavy trade; trade rumors (and the fantasy implications of them) involving Matt Kemp, Alex Rios, Josh Willingham, and a host of others; the St. Louis Cardinals’ signing of A.J. Pierzynski; first thoughts on how soon Rusney Castillo will have an impact; Allen Webster versus Brandon Workman; Ian Kennedy’s injury; Billy Butler’s recent surge; Collin McHugh’s return from the DL; the health of a host of other returning players, plus a couple of them on the way out; and of course two-turn hurlers.

As usual, don’t hesitate to tweet us or comment with fantasy questions so that we may answer them on our next episode.

Roto Riteup — Presented By DraftKings: July 26, 2014

Seven years ago today “The Simpsons Movie” launched internationally. I won’t touch on too much Simpsons stuff, that is Paul Swydan’s territory, but I will say I enjoyed the film.

On today’s agenda:
1. Wilson Ramos continues to rake
2. A strong start from Drew Smyly
3. A comparison with Zack Wheeler
4. The daily five
