2014 RotoGraphs Staff Picks
Ever wanted all that sweet RotoGraphs analysis in one place? We aim to please here at the site, and are happy to post our official RotoGraphs Staff Picks for the upcoming fantasy season. Think of this as a one stop shop cheat sheet for your fantasy drafts. One of the problems we run into at RotoGraphs is that some of us may have the same sleepers, but only one of us will write up that player. These lists give you a better idea of how many of us at RotoGraphs like, or dislike, a certain player, and which deep sleepers we are targeting. Read on if you can handle the awesomeness.
You’ll immediately understand most of the categories, but some require an explanation.
Deep Sleeper is a player who isn’t a mixed-leaguer, but may end up in a role and perform well.
Best Flyer is more of a desperation heave. Very few of the Best Flyer candidates will be drafted in most leagues, but are perfect for in-season watch lists. Monitor their progress throughout the year, and strike when you can.
There was also some confusion with the Best Sophomore Pitcher category, which was completely my fault. The goal here was to focus on the bunched up group of Michael Wacha, Gerrit Cole, Sonny Gray, etc. Jose Fernandez is a consensus top-10 pitcher, so he’s the obvious answer here, and I should have made it clear he was excluded from the process. Alas, I messed up. But if you want to know which of that later group some of us like, you’ll get that here.
Here are the results.

The obvious question, for Jeff Zimmerman: why do you pick Miguel Cabrera as your bust?
And why is Trevor Bauer his comeback player, if Bauer only has 33 career innings pitched in at the MLB level?
I see Bauer as more of a post-hype sleeper. He was a heavily hyped pitching prospect while with and coming from Arizona, then totally bombed when he made it in the bigs with Cleveland. The walks and total lack of command really did him in and diminished his star. In that way, he is a comeback player, but I typically think of veterans as comeback players, whether coming from a down year or returning from an injury.
I think he was concerned about the abdomen injury.
But he sure does have the deepest deep sleeper!
Injury/playing time issues with Cabrera.
playing time? How many weeks in to the season do you think Ausmus will bench him?
Seems like the injury prediction for Cabrera is just a random guess (like many of these predictions likely are). He is playing 1B/DH now (way less demanding than 3B) and his injury from last year was not a chronic one.
What does a Yasiel Puig bust look like? 15-20 HR, 5 SB, .280?
.270 in a .320 zone…
Were the Beachy “comeback player of the year” choices before news came out that he might need TJ surgery?
I am pretty sure, yes, but Chris can confirm. We’ve been posting these all week on our Google Doc.
Yes. These were due last night, of course. So, obviously, this happened this morning.
This….this spreadsheet makes me erect.
Also, Eno, you and me…we’d be best friends based on this chart.
Thanks for compiling this list. Some good stuff to digest here.
Looking for one more manager to take over a team in a competitive dynasty league. Deep roster (28) and MILB squad. Must be active. Good guys to play with. 4th year running. Reply to inquire.
Dylan, I’d be very interested in taking over another Dynasty League Team. I’m pretty good at the “turn around,” and in fact, relish the challenge. Oh, and I’m active. cdskolnik@msn.com
Have emailed you details.
I would be interested .
Send me an email at dylanschafer at gmail dot com.
I’d be interested as well. Ruki_Motomiya@hotmail.com
Since this spot has been filled, anyone else have a dynasty/keeper league with spots to fill that is also free?
P.S. Love the Billy Burns picks.
I thought I’d be out on my own limb with that one…shucks.
AL only league traded Viciedo to get Anibal. Relying on him to be my #2. Eno, why the bust tag?
Past injuries is the biggest thing. And he is getting old
Viciedo for Anibal? lol
That’s an interesting point you bring to the discussion.
So you’re your league’s trade bully 🙂
Based on some recent developments, Tyler Skaggs and Jesse Chavez look like nice sleepy types too.
Why are some names bolded?
Because Hyperlinks are a thing.
I assumed that all the players were hyperlinked. That’s what I get for living dangerously.
All players are hyperlinked the first time they appear in the article.

No josh Johnson picks for comeback player?
Why is Freddie Freeman a bust Mr. Breen?
BABIP falloff, probably.
I liked Jesse Chavez before said developments, but now he qualifies as one of my top 5 dollar days targets in my AL only leagues. Also, I know we can’t put much stock in spring stats, but what can we really expect from Drew Hutchinson if/when he’s in Tor’s rotation for a whole season?
Seems like Hutchison’s velocity is up this spring. Prime AL-Only target to me. See if I get him in AL Tout this Sunday!
Link to last years predictions?
POD- Why is Scherzer coming in as a bust?
Do we have this for 2015 yet? 🙂 Thanks!
