Jackie Bradley Jr. Doesn’t Look That Different

So, Jackie Bradley Jr. hit another home run last night. It’s his seventh of the season and his sixth since May 5. That’s six home runs in 13 games to go with a .404/.474/.762 line. All the while, he extended his hitting streak to 24 games. It’s pretty crazy. He’s on a tear, for sure.

But I’ve seen some overenthusiastic Tweets about his breakout being legitimate. That, I don’t fully understand. He doesn’t seem like a fundamentally different hitter than the JBJ we saw in 2013. Or 2014. Or 2015.

Obviously, the .271 ISO (isolated power) is impressive for a relatively tiny dude. It’s not far off his .249 ISO from last year, so it looks like it might be something sustainable. His strikeout rate (K%) is way down, too, which is undoubtedly a boon to his triple-slash line. But red flags abound with JBJ, all (or most) of which I will detail here.

Boston Red Sox Outfield Depth Chart

Jacoby Ellsbury takes his shiny new ring and shiny new contract to don what are ostensibly shiny new pinstripes, leaving the Boston Red Sox with a differently named center fielder on opening day for the first time since Coco Crisp played there in 2007. But the old out/new in truism certainly applies here as Ellsbury leaving creates new opportunities for fantasy baseball enthusiasts at a position I’m not finding particularly deep in 2014. Daily Fantasy Strategy – 8/30/13 – For Draftstreet

September call ups are almost here, so some new names will enter the daily fantasy pool. This is probably more true on other daily sites besides Draftstreet, but call ups tend to be undervalued. Because pricing models are based on previous statistics, it makes sense that guys without a track record would be somewhat conservatively priced. Here are just a few call ups that could be useful in the final month.

Nick Castellanos – OF – Detroit Tigers

Castellanos didn’t destroy Triple-A or anything, but he hit for a little power (.168 ISO) and displayed good plate discipline (16.4% K%, 9.3% BB%). He’s unlikely to see regular starts, but that’s the beauty of daily fantasy. We don’t need him to play everyday to have a use for him. He may take some starts from Matt Tuiasos0po against left-handed starters. He had a .852 OPS in 109 PA versus lefties in Triple-A, so if he’s cheap enough he could be an option when starting. Prospect Impact: Jackie Bradley, Bryce Brentz, Leury Garcia

This offseason, as transactions unfold and news breaks on the big league level, we’ll take a look at how the ripple effects shake out on the prospect side, focusing primarily on 2013 fantasy impact, with an eye toward the future, too.

This week: An injury to a Red Sox outfielder could open the door for a trio of intriguing youngsters with different skill sets; and the Rangers are considering an under-the-radar prospect for a backup role.
