Starting Pitcher Chart – July 17th

Daily SP Chart archive
The chart includes their season performance, their opponent’s wOBA versus the pitcher’s handedness over the last 30 days, my general start/sit recommendation for 10-team, 12-team, and 15-team (or more) leagues, and then a note about them. Obviously, there are league sizes beyond those three so it’s essentially a shallow, medium, deep. If a pitcher only has an “x” in 15-team, it doesn’t mean there’s no potential use in 10s and 12s, but it’s basically a risky stream for those spots.
These are general recommendations, and your league situation will carry more weight whether you are protecting ratios or chasing counting numbers. This is for standard 5×5 roto leagues. The thresholds for H2H starts are generally lower, especially in points leagues so I thought there would be more value focusing on roto.
I posted my latest set of SP Rankings over the weekend so check them out here if you missed ’em!

RK | PITCHER | TM | OPP | 10 | 12 | 15+ | IP | ERA | WHIP | K-BB | wOBA RK | NOTE | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Logan Gilbert | SEA | MIN | x | x | x | 108.1 | 3.66 | 0.98 | 20% | 13th | Drop in Ks hasn’t altered his status as a must art arm | |
2 | Jesús Luzardo | MIA | at | STL | x | x | x | 109.1 | 3.29 | 1.13 | 23% | 7th | Absolutely rolling lately w/a 1.14 ERA/0.80 WHIP/29% K-BB in his last 32 IP |
3 | Shane McClanahan | TBR | at | TEX | x | x | x | 96 | 2.53 | 1.17 | 16% | 1st | A couple sub-4 IP outings prior to his IL stint, but I’m putting him right back in for the 2-step (v. BAL this wknd) |
4 | Sonny Gray | MIN | at | SEA | x | x | x | 99.2 | 2.89 | 1.27 | 15% | 19th | Likely some ERA regression coming as the 4% HR/FB climbs back toward his 12% career mark |
5 | Logan Webb | SFG | at | CIN | x | x | x | 126 | 3.14 | 1.11 | 21% | 6th | Tough spot, but he never leaves the lineup |
6 | Nick Pivetta | BOS | at | OAK | x | x | x | 69 | 4.83 | 1.29 | 17% | 27th | Getting another chance in the rotation; has been sharp in L4 extended RP outings: 2.87 ERA/0.79 WHIP/34% K-BB |
7 | Dane Dunning | TEX | TBR | x | x | 92 | 2.84 | 1.13 | 9% | 14th | I’m just a fan… even w/the modest 9% K-BB, I’m starting him pretty much everywhere | ||
8 | Miles Mikolas | STL | MIA | x | x | 112.2 | 4.23 | 1.30 | 11% | 18th | Slated to start despite tossing 3 no-hit IP on 7/14 | ||
9 | Griffin Canning | LAA | NYY | x | x | 74 | 4.62 | 1.20 | 16% | 28th | Judge-less Yankees are definitely a team to stream against, though his HR issues always make him worrisome | ||
10 | Matt Manning | DET | at | KCR | x | x | 29 | 3.72 | 1.03 | 9% | 30th | Riding that .200 BABIP pretty hard and I really only want this matchup, not the full 2-step (v. SD this wknd) | |
11 | Grayson Rodriguez | BAL | LAD | x | 45.1 | 7.35 | 1.74 | 17% | 5th | Returning to the majors with a brutal 2-step (at TBR this wknd), but he was great in AAA (1.69 ERA/0.99 WHIP in 37 IP) | |||
12 | Paul Blackburn | OAK | BOS | x | 37 | 4.86 | 1.54 | 17% | 7th | 4.08 SIERA and 17% K-BB are interesting, but a BOS/HOU 2-step is tough | |||
13 | Emmet Sheehan | LAD | at | BAL | x | 20.2 | 4.35 | 1.06 | 10% | 10th | Far from a certainty even w/a 2-step given that he has at TEX this wknd | ||
14 | Drew Smyly | CHC | WSN | x | 94 | 4.31 | 1.36 | 11% | 12th | ERA up over a run in his L5, going from 3.27 to 4.31 | |||
15 | Quinn Priester | PIT | CLE | x | #N/A | #N/A | #N/A | #N/A | 11th | Prospect arm debuting after a 4.31 ERA/1.36 WHIP/13% K-BB in 88 IP at AAA | |||
16 | MacKenzie Gore | WSN | at | CHC | x | 89.2 | 4.42 | 1.46 | 18% | 14th | Has become a lot less reliable with duds in 3 of his L5 | ||
17 | Brandon Williamson | CIN | SFG | 46.2 | 5.21 | 1.35 | 10% | 21st | BB counts in his L5: 0, 0, 4, 1, 1 and has a 4.00 ERA in 4 starts around that 4 BB outing | ||||
18 | Luis Severino | NYY | at | LAA | 42.2 | 7.38 | 1.80 | 9% | 2nd | Not terribly trustworthy in even the best of matchups, let alone difficult ones | |||
19 | Jordan Lyles | KCR | DET | 96.2 | 6.42 | 1.29 | 9% | 25th | No thanks | ||||
20 | Xzavion Curry | CLE | at | PIT | 46.1 | 3.11 | 1.17 | 11% | 29th | Isn’t really stretch out w/a max of 45 pitches over is L6 outings |
Sheehan’s K/9 dive suggests he’s not fooling many at the moment.
