Shortstop ADP Market Report: 12/26/2023
As we hit the beginning of draft season, it is important to monitor where players are being drafted on a regular basis. Throughout draft season, I will be doing that work for you with regular updates on the Average Draft Position on NFBC up until Opening Day. You can read all the Market Reports here.
Top 100 Players Rising
Nico Hoerner (+8.08) – See the piece in this series on Second Baseman.

Top 200 Players Rising
Dansbby Swanson (+10.28) – Swanson rising has more to do with a low initial ADP than anything else. His first season in Chicago was mediocre from a fantasy perspective, hitting .244/.328/.416 with 22 home runs and nine stolen bases. The underlying numbers aren’t super exciting either with a sub 80% zone contact rate and a max EV of just 109.1. There isn’t a ton in the profile that says he should improve much in year two of his new contract. He is likely just a good accumulator with limited upside unless we see some sort of change in spring.

Top 300 Players Rising
Luis Rengifo (+13.33) – See the piece in this series on Second Baseman.
Top 300 Players Falling
Jordan Lawlar (-10.49) – Lawlar is beginning to drop due to questions of what his role will be to begin 2024. With the addition of Eugenio Suarez and the return of Lourdes Gurriel, Lawlar will likely begin the year in the minors awaiting an opening in the lineup. In spite of being a top prospect, Lawlar doesn’t profile to have a carrying tool in fantasy in terms of prodigious power or speed so he needs to accumulate plate appearances to have fantasy value. With the playing time in question, I think he is better left for the waiver wire than drafting and hoping he can find a role at some point.
Others of Note
Tim Anderson (+11.39) – Anderson is rising after being buried a bit in the ADP. Anderson is coming off of a disastrous season in which he hit just one home run and hit just .245/.286/.296. Anderson was struggling with an injury and playing in what seemed like a toxic environment in Chicago. The latter should be resolved as he is a free agent and will end up on a new team in 2024. He is a career .280 hitter and should be able to return to being a valuable fantasy asset if he can find a full time job and stay on the field. There is a good amount of risk considering h has struggled with injuries the last two years, but the price is still cheap enough that is a good gamble to take.
Vaughn Grission (+27.87) – I am surprised to see that Grissom is rising because there just doesn’t appear to be a huge role for him in Atlanta. The defense continues to be a problem for him and with Arcia back and the addition of Jarred Kelenic, it seems Grissom is destined for a short side platoon role.
Colson Montgomery (+33.15) – Montgomery is an exciting young prospect that some are expecting to debut in 2024. WhileI think he will debut this season, I don’t know when. He is 21-years-old and only had 167 plate appearances in AA in 2023. There is a good amount of pop and a great approach in the profile and I think he will be a stud at some point, but I would be surprised if he spent more than half the season in the Majors on what should be a rebuilding White Sox club.
Adalberto Mondesi (-30.85) – Mondesi is dropping after another injury washout season. He is also now a free agent so it is hard to know what his role will be even if he does sign. The price is nothing so he isn’t the worst of gambles, but at this point there is no reason to think he returns to the type of player that can make the impact he once did.
Paul deJong (+75.44) – deJong is rising after signing a deal to be the shortstop for the White Sox. deJong has struggled with playing time and consistency over the last few seasons, but unless the White Sox bring someone else in, it appears he will have a robust role which makes him usable for deeper formats.

Serious question here, does Wander Franco return this season? Perhaps with a different team?
Or will he be hanging out with Trevor Bauer and Julio Urias having beers and talking about the good ‘ole days?
This season? I’d be shocked.
you do realize that Bauer was framed- right?
Agree it would be very surprising if he played this year. But I don’t at all get how it would be for another team if he did. How would that even work? If he’s suspended for life then presumably his contract is voided. If he’s suspended for 100 games or a year or whatever, then trading him would be selling low while cutting him outright (and still being on the hook for the remainder of his deal) would be … well, what am I missing?
He most likely will not play in MLB again, period.
Being that he is on the run from the police, and apparently significant evidence came out against him he is likely looking at a lengthy prison sentence once they catch him. With his age he will likely still be pretty young if he gets what looks to be the standard 5-10 years in prison in DR, but I highly doubt any team would want to take a shot on him at that point. I’d imagine Tampa is not going to have to pay his salary. I think if something changes, or he only faces a couple years, or he is found “not guilty” he could theoretically play again, but seeing as how now teams have even taken a chance on Bauer thus far who wasn’t convicted, (remains to be seen what happens) I cannot imagine someone who is actually convicted will ever come back to baseball again.
