Sleeper and the Bust DK Contest

On most Tuesday’s and Friday’s and some other days, Paul Sporer and I will be doing a $5 draftkings game for anyone that is interested. Will add a link once available.

Quick Hits

Lewis Brinson was acquired by the Giants from the Astros. Brinson is a former top prospect that was the key piece of the Christian Yelich trade, but has failed to live up to the hype. There is a ton of power and speed in the profile, but unless he can learn to make contact, he will continue to be a AAAA player.

Eloy Jimenez left Thursday’s game with a leg issue. It doesn’t sound super serious, so consider him day-to-day for now.

Christian Yelich left Thursday’s game with a neck issue. This is disappointing as he has been having a nice bounce back season. Yelich has a history of back issues, so it would not be surprising if this led to an IL stint.

Various News and Notes
Gunnar Henderson went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in the victory over the Guardians.

Henderson now has a home run and a stolen base in his first two games with the Orioles, but what was really impressive was his defense:

The bat seems like it is ready, but seeing the defense be so strong early gives us some faith that he can play everyday through the rest of the season and potentially make the club out of spring training next year.

Joey Meneses went 4-for-6 with the game winning home run in the victory over the A’s.

Meneses continues to just rake, hitting .354/.385/.626 with seven home runs in 104 plate appearances. He hasn’t walked much at all this year, but he also doesn’t strike out, which is supported by his low swinging strike rate. However, he makes league average zone contact and there is clear regression coming to the batting average at some point with his unsustainable .378 BABIP. That being said, there is not a ton of time left in the season and he could just be this year’s Frank Schwindel that we fade in 2023, but that is valuable while he is hot and the Nationals allow him to play on the rebuilding club.

Ken Waldichuk threw 4.2 innings versus the Nationals, allowing one run on five hits and four walks while striking out six.

There was a lot to like in this outing. He has four legit pitches though he only threw the curve a few times and he gets swings and misses with them. The control was an issue and has been an issue at times in the minors. He could be an interesting pick up rest of the way in deeper formats and a fun player to bet on for 2023.

Streaming Pitchers (Under 50% in CBS)

Pitcher for Today:  Dean Kremer vs OAK

I don’t love Kremer, but I do love the matchup.

High Risk Options: JP Sears at BAL, Zach Davies vs MIL, Daniel Lynch at DET.

Pitcher for Tomorrow: Austin Voth vs OAK

Voth has pitched well and has a great matchup at home.

High Risk Options: Jake Odorizzi vs MIA, Roansy Contreras vs TOR, Drew Smyly at STL Jakob Junis vs PHI, Brayan Bello vs TEX, Jonathan Heasley at DET.

For those of you that would like to see how these picks play out, I have a doc I put together to track the stats from the recommended pitchers. It does not include the “High Risk Options.”
