News and Notes
The curse of New York baseball continues – Jasson Domínguez tore his UCL and will require Tommy John surgery. The ballyhooed top prospect had hit the ground running with 4 HR in his first eight games but could now miss around nine months.
“How to Make Yourself Millions of More Dollars” by Yoshinobu Yamamoto: When a bunch of MLB executives show up to scout your game in anticipation of you being posted to MLB teams during the offseason, just throw a dominant no-hitter! The right-handed Yamamoto threw his second no-no on Saturday, striking out eight and walking one, with eyewitnesses (allegedly) reporting that Yankees GM Brian Cashman was drooling openly from his front-row seat. Considering how light the upcoming free agent class was even before Shohei Ohtani was injured, expect Yamamoto to cause a feeding frenzy once his official posting happens.
Pablo López saved his best for September, striking out 14 Mets over eight shutout innings, while allowing just two hits. But because this is baseball, the Twins lost. Lopez is in the middle of his best season yet, currently running a career-best 29% K% and just an inning away from a new high in innings pitched. I have a sneaking suspicion that his post-150 ADP from 2023 is going to dramatically rise next season.
Mason Miller will start today vs HOU. Manager Mark Kotsay initially said that Miller would be used in the middle innings but plans have apparently already changed. But don’t start thinking it means he’ll pitch longer than we originally anticipated. Miller is likely to again be on a hard pitch count after throwing just 29 pitches in his first appearance back.
Bad news for everyone counting on a Spencer Strider two-step this week – his start has been pushed back until Wednesday due to illness.
With Strider’s start being delayed, Kyle Wright could end his rehab assignment early to take one-half of Atlanta’s doubleheader against the Phillies on Monday. But if he does, do keep your expectations in check – Wright went just 3.2 IP in his last rehab start (50 pitches) and had previously said that he’d need another rehab start before rejoining the rotation.
Clayton Kershaw was supposed to start today against the Padres but will now be pushed back to Friday against the Mariners, snatching away a coveted two-step from those grinding for a fantasy championship. Manager Dave Roberts claims this isn’t about any injury issues and is just to line Kershaw up better for the rest of the season. Which, of course, makes total sense because the Dodgers only have a 13-game lead in the NL West and could probably use some advanced rotation tuning in order to really finish things off strong. Remember kids, major league managers are always telling us the whole truth and should definitely always be trusted.
A tradition like no other – the Royals lost their 100th game. No fantasy news, just wanted to get an unsolicited shot in. Why? Because I’m from St. Louis and making fun of our cross-state, little cow-town brother is all we’ve got. Well, that and humidity.
Bumps and Bruises
After no-hitting the Yankees over eight innings, Corbin Burnes was removed with a sprained left ankle after making the final out in the eighth. Luckily, they definitely didn’t get walked off in the 13th after 10+ IP of no-no ball. Consider him day-to-day but it doesn’t appear to be serious enough to put his next start (vs WSN) at risk.
Francisco Alvarez was removed in the seventh yesterday with a hand injury but the X-rays came back negative. Consider him day-to-day.
Jeimer Candelario was removed in the fifth inning yesterday with a balky back. No word yet on the seriousness so consider him day-to-day.

Streaming Pitcher for Today: José Quintana, NYM vs ARI – You might not get a pile of strikeouts but Quintana has been quietly effective in nearly every one of his nine starts since returning from the IL in July, running a 3.00 ERA (3.23 FIP) over 54 IP but going 2-5 because of general Mets stank. But really he’s had just one bad start, allowing 5 ER in 5.1 IP against Atlanta. But who among us hasn’t gotten hammered by the ridiculous Braves offense? Outside of that start, Quintana has allowed 3 ER twice, with every other start being 2 ER or less.
High Risk for Today: Nope! Let’s put every other likely available starter in a bucket of “way too risky to mess with during these prime fantasy weeks”. I mean, I guess if you want to play with bale fire, you could try out Gavin Stone vs SDP, or (gob help you) Patrick Corbin against the Pirates but I can’t in good conscience recommend that you actually should.
