Roto Riteup — Presented by DraftKings: June 19, 2014

Y’all have stuck with me for four straight days this week, and you will be punished for doing so by having David Wiers back at the Roto Riteup this weekend. I didn’t do this to you; you did this to yourself.

On today’s agenda:
1. Kyle Gibson finds his strikeouts
2. Jake Arrieta Watch
3. Jarrod Saltalamacchia back from DL
4. Fun with arbitrary endpoints
5. The Forceful Five

Kyle Gibson finds his strikeouts
Gibson’s start against the Red Sox yesterday was notable not only for it being his third straight shutout, but also because he struck out eight batters. Gibson also allowed just a single hit over seven innings, and that’s great and all, but striking guys out is more interesting. Coming into the game, Gibson had a K% under 12%, almost exactly the rate he posted over ten starts last season.

Just like Tuesday’s terrific start from Phil Hughes, Gibson’s went to waste, and the Twins lost in 10 innings. Minnesota was swept by the Red Sox over three games, losing by a grand total of one run in each game.

Jake Arrieta Watch
Jake Arrieta, 2014: 50 IP, 55 K, 15 BB, 2 HR | 53% GB%, .321 BABIP, 1.98 ERA, 2.31 FIP
Jake Arrieta, May 22 to June 13: 29.2 IP, 31 K, 6 BB, 1 HR | .293 BABIP, 1.82 ERA
Jake Arrieta, yesterday: 7 IP, 11 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 5 H

Jake Arrieta makes me want to do very disgusting things to my swimsuit area.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia back from DL
Salty was out for over two weeks after suffering a concussion, but he’s back now after being activated from the DL yesterday. Salty has had a strangely productive season, posting a 106 wRC+, but a .237 batting average has pretty much killed his fantasy value. If you’re playing in an OBP league Salty is fine to have around, but standard league owners should basically ignored him.

Fun with arbitrary endpoints
All stats are through Tuesday unless otherwise noted

Alex Gordon, last 30 days: .323/.444/.563, 5 HR, 3 SB; .377 BABIP
Lonnie Chisenhall, last 30 days: .371/.406/.691, 8 HR, 0 SB; .350 BABIP
Evan Longoria, last 14 days: .265/.379/.531, 3 HR, 0 SB; .270 BABIP
Tommy La Stella, MLB: 74 PA, .364/.425/.394, 0 HR, 1 SB, .400 BABIP

The Forceful Five

SP: Andrew Heaney | $6,500 | vNYM
SP: Jose Quintana | $6,900 | @MIN
1B: Matt Adams | $3,900 | vPHI (David Buchanan)
OF: Seth Smith | $3,600 | vSEA (Erasmo Ramirez)
OF: Matt Holliday | $4,700 | vPHI (David Buchanan)

I really like Seth Smith today, and would even be tempted to double-down and take Will Venable, as well. I want Heaney just for the fun factor of it being his MLB debut.
