Hyun-Jin Ryu may return Sunday
Ryu is scheduled to throw a simulated game today, and if all goes well he’ll be back with the team over the weekend. Even if everything goes smoothly, there’s a chance his start gets pushed back to Monday, which would make him part of the September roster expansion and save the club from making any other moves to clear a roster spot. I’d like to think the Dodgers will opt for Monday regardless, but be sure to check his status if you can activate him in a daily league.

Erasmo Ramirez to start today
After not being the best pitcher in baseball over his past couple starts, the Mariners are giving Felix Hernandez some extra rest, and Erasmo will be the one stepping in on Wednesday. One of my favorite pitchers when he’s on, Erasmo hasn’t given me much reason to love him this year, though he did look absolutely fantastic two starts ago against the crappy Mets. Ramirez will be facing the crappy Rangers in Safeco Field, so he’s an interesting fantasy option for today.

Yordano Ventura scratched today
Ventura’s got a sore back, so the Royals will sit him today. Ventura’s blazing fastball has served him well this year, and due to a couple small injuries, the right-hander isn’t likely to hit his innings limit until the last week of the season, which is awesome for those hoping to use him in your head-to-head playoffs.

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez to debut in September
Gonzalez, a Cuban defector who signed with the Phillies this offseason, is set to come up to the majors when the rosters expand. Gonzalez was signed as a starter, but he’s been pitching out of the bullpen over the past month, and that’s where he’ll be in the majors. Gonzalez isn’t much of a fantasy option unless Jonathan Papelbon is moved on a waiver deal.

Matt Garza to return soon
Garza hasn’t headed out on a rehab assignment yet, but there’s a chance he won’t have to. The Brewers are going to decide today if their right-hander can jump straight back into the big leagues, which would be a strange move. Garza hasn’t started a game since August 3rd, and a month is quite a long time to be out of action without needing to to do some rehab work.

Any concerns about Brandon McCarthy after his bad outing last night or should he continue to be a solid mixed league starter for the rest of the season? I know it was one bad start and he has been dominant since joining New York, but he Detroit seemed to be squaring him up really well last night.

Also, if Ryu returns this week I have a bit of a roster crunch. Between Phil Hughes or Andrew Cashner, who would you keep around to make room for Ryu? I’m leaning towards dumping Cashner who just isnt striking people out this year and according to the MASH report his velocity in his last start was at a season low. Am I crazy to take Hughes over Cashner?

keep him active for now, but Toronto is a good hitting team, so you might just want to bench McCarthy.

You’d keep McCarthy over Ryu and Hughes? That seems crazy.
