Josh Hamilton out 6-8 weeks
Hamilton pulled a dumb-dumb and slid into first base, tearing his thumb and forcing him to go under the knife and miss up to two months of action. Hamilton was off to a boiling hot start to the season, hitting two dongers in his first eight games in what some (foolishly) hoped would be a resurgent comeback campaign. Hamilton’s certainly worth the DL spot, but a thumb can sap some power when he returns, so this could be an injury that hampers him all year long.

A James Paxton update
The Mariners had yet to announce any certain test results as of writing, but it sounds like Paxton was simply pulled from his start due to a strained lat and nothing more sinister. Paxton will still need a DL stint to rest up, and the Mariners will roll with Chris Young as a fill-in for the time being, with Blake Beaven likely picking up a start while phenom Taijuan Walker rehabs in the minors.

A Matt Moore Update
Like Paxton, Moore is headed to the 15-day DL, but his injury could be much more serious. Moore left a start with elbow soreness, and after an inconclusive MRI, he’s off to visit the grimm known as Dr. James Andrews.

Fun with arbitrary endpoints
All 2014 stats are through Tuesday’s excellent game action.

– Justin Smoak, 2014: 31 PA, .321/.387/.643
– Phil Hughes, second half of 2013: 61.2 IP, 5.69 ERA; 48 K, 19 BB, 10 HR

The Daily Five

SP: David Hale, $8,700
He’s facing the Mets, and that’s all you need to know.

SP: Tom Koehler, $7,300
Facing off against the Nats doesn’t get me excited, but he’s one of the cheaper options available.

1B: Gaby Sanchez, $3,800
Gets to go against Travis Wood away from Pittsburgh’s suffocating stadium,

2B: Jason Kipnis, $5,000
Danks theory in the Cell.

OF: Brandon Moss, $4,300
Because I believe Mike Pelfrey is hot garbage, is why.
