Closer Chaos

Emilio Pagan threw two-thirds of an inning against the Cubs, allowing two earned runs on two hits and no walks while striking out one in the blown save on Monday.

Pagan has struggled this season, posting a 6.43 ERA and blowing three of nine save opportunities. His home run rate is 1.93 and if he can’t limit the homers, he may lose this job to Tony Santillan.

Caleb Killian threw an inning against the Padres on Monday, allowing a solo home run but no other baserunners to register his first save of the season for the Giants. Killian was once a starting pitching prospect for the Cubs and Giants with some promise, but has found his niche in the bullpen after returning to San Francisco. He has only given up two earned runs on the season and could take over the closer role for the Giants, especially with Erik Miller hitting the IL and Ryan Walker struggling.

Quick Hits
Tarik Skubal was placed on the IL with loose bodies in his elbow.

He is expected to miss 2-to-3 months.

Shea Langeliers was placed on the Paternity List on Monday. He will likely miss the next 3-4 games.

The A’s traded for Jonah Heim in exchange for cash considerations. With Sean Murphy returning, the Braves no longer needed Heim and the A’s will add some more depth to their catching group. He may be designated for assignment though once Langeliers returns from the Paternity List or the A’s could do that to Austin Wynns.

Austin Hays was placed on the IL with a calf strain. There is no timetable for his return.

Yainer Diaz is expected to go on the IL with an oblique strain. These injuries usually take 4-to-6 weeks to recover from.

Roman Anthony left Monday’s game with wrist discomfort.

X-Rays were negative, but he is expected to see a hand/wrist specialist in the next few days. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Various News and Notes
Davis Martin threw seven scoreless innings versus the Angels, allowing five hits and no walks while striking out 10 in the victory on Monday. The Stuff+ hasn’t been good nor has the swinging strike rate, but Martin has been making it work by attacking the zone and mixing his pitches very well. Regression is coming, but he has always had the ability to go deep into games and his new attack should continue to work better than previous seasons.

David Fry went 2-for-3 with a home run in the loss to the Royals on Monday.

Fry has quietly been pretty good this season, hitting .262/.392/.500 with three home runs in 51 plate appearances. He doesn’t play enough for most formats, but he is just six games away from picking up catcher eligibility in 10 game formats which would make him a viable C2 in deeper formats.

Streaming Pitchers (Under 50% in Yahoo)

Pitcher for Today: Cade Cavalli vs MIN

Cavalli has looked better recently and gets a bad Twins team.

Other Options: Bryce Elder at SEA, Brandon Sproat at STL, Eduardo Rodriguez vs PIT

Pitcher for Tomorrow: Christian Scott at COL

Always a risk in Coors, but Scott has great stuff and the Rockies are terrible.

Other Options: Jake Bennett at DET, Patrick Corbin at TB, Noah Schultz at LAA, Joey Cantillo at KC, Jeffrey Springs at PHI, Walbert Urena vs CHW.

For those of you that would like to see how these picks play out, I have a doc I put together to track the stats from my recommended pitchers. It does not include the “Other Options.”
