Closer Chaos
Robert Garcia threw a scoreless ninth inning versus the Blue Jays to register the save for the Rangers on Tuesday. With Luke Jackson struggling and Chris Martin on the IL, Garcia has emerged as the leading candidate for saves. Jackson was able to pitch a clean eighth inning to get the win and there is a chance he gets the role back, but for now it seems this is Garcia’s job.
Quick Hits
Nick Kurtz was placed on the IL with a hip injury. There is no timetable for his return. The A’s recalled Drew Avans to replace Kurtz on the roster.
The A’s traded for Sean Newcomb from the Red Sox for cash considerations. He will likely add depth to the A’s bullpen.
Matt Thaiss was traded to the Rays for Dru Baker. Thaiss will back up Danny Jansen in Tampa. Baker is a speedy outfielder that profiles as a fourth or fifth outfielder at the Major League level.
Matt Vierling was placed on the IL with shoulder inflammation. This is disappointing as Vierling just got back from the IL. Wenceel Pérez was activated from the IL to take his spot in the roster.
Bryce Harper left Tuesday’s game after getting hit in the elbow with a pitch.
X-rays were negative and he was diagnosed with a contusion. Consider him day-to-day at this time.
Nathan Eovaldi left Tuesday’s game with a triceps issue.
The Rangers are calling the issue fatigue and Eovaldi is expected to make his next turn in the rotation. Consider him day-to-day for now.
Various News and Notes
Wenceel Perez went 1-for-3 with a home run in victory over the Giants on Tuesday.
Perez was making his season debut after missing time with an injury. Perez was good at times last season, hitting .242/.300/.383 with nine home runs and nine stolen bases in 425 plate appearances. He will likely be on the short side of a platoon in the outfield for right now, but he could find himself a regular if he can make enough contact.
Logan Evans threw eight innings versus the Nationals, allowing one run on four hits and a walk while striking out four in the victory on Tuesday.
Evans did a great job of mixing his pitches, throwing five different pitches and keeping the Nats off balanced. He doesn’t have great stuff and relies a lot on not allowing hard contact, but he pitches in a great park that will protect him and the Mariners offense is giving a lot of run support.
