Closer Chaos
Grant Taylor threw a perfect ninth inning and struck out three against the Marlins to register the save on Tuesday.
With Seranthony Dominguez struggling, the White Sox turned to Taylor to lock down the ninth inning. Taylor is a top 100 prospect that may be moved into the rotation at some point down the road, but it appears he could be the preferred option in the ninth if Dominguez can’t get back on track.
Quick Hits
Drake Baldwin was placed on the IL with a strained oblique. Typically these injuries take about 4-to-6 weeks to recover from. Chadwick Tromp was recalled to take his spot on the roster.
Ryan Jeffers was placed on the IL with a hamate fracture. He will likely miss two months with the injury and is droppable in all formats. Alex Jackson was recalled to take his spot on the roster.
Lance McCullers was placed on the IL with shoulder inflammation. He was projected to start on Tuesday and was scratched then very quickly placed on the IL.The Astros activated Nate Pearson to take his spot on the roster.
Yandy Diaz left Tuesday’s game after being hit in the hands with a pitch.
There was no update after the game on his condition. Consider him day-to-day for now.
Brenton Doyle left Tuesday’s game with a side contusion after hurting himself on a diving play. There was no update on his condition after the game. Consider him day-to-day at this time.
Various News and Notes
Zebby Matthews threw six innings on Tuesday, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out six in the loss to the Astros.
Zebby had a 36% CSW on the fastball and mixed his secondary pitches well. The arm talent has always been there, but he has struggled with command in the past. This appears to be a nice step forward.
Zach Gelof went 3-for-5 with a home run in the victory over the Angels on Tuesday.
Gelof has been on fire since the beginning of May with six home runs and two stolen bases in 69 plate appearances. He still doesn’t make a ton of contact in the zone, but he has improved his approach and his swinging strike rate which is a massive step in the right direction. He should be picked up in most leagues to ride this hot stretch and to see if it will continue.
