Closer Chaos
Taylor Rogers threw two-thirds of an inning against the Astros, not allowing a baserunner and striking out one to get his first save of the season on Monday.
Rogers was perceived as the top candidate to get saves coming into the season, but he has not been a part of the committee until now. The saves will still be split in the Minnesota bullpen and there won’t likely be a ton of wins there to save anyhow, so he isn’t viable in most formats.
Quick Hits
Kris Bubic was placed on the IL with elbow soreness. The Royals are calling this precautionary, but these issues are often a precursor to Tommy John surgery. The Royals recalled Eli Morgan to take Bubic’s spot on the roster.
Jose Altuve was placed on the IL with an oblique strain. Typically, these injuries take about 4-to-6 weeks to return from. Jeremy Pena was activated from the IL to take his spot on the roster.
Corey Seager was placed on the IL with back inflammation. There is no timetable for his return. The Rangers recalled Michael Helman to take his spot on the roster.
Jordan Beck was placed on the 10-Day IL with a hamstring strain. There is no timetable for his return. Braxton Fulford was recalled to take his spot on the roster.
Jacob Young left Monday’s game after being hit by a pitch.
X-rays were negative. Consider him day-to-day at this time.
MacKenzie Gore left Monday’s start with lat tightness. The Rangers stated that the move was precautionary. Consider him day-to-day at this time.
Jung Hoo Lee 이정후 left Monday’s game with back spasms. The Giants were down a ton in the game so it may have just been a precautionary thing as well. Consider him day-to-day at this time.
Various News and Notes
Dylan Crews is expected to be recalled from the minor leagues on Tuesday. Crews is a former top prospect that struggled last season and didn’t make the opening day roster. He was hitting .258/.345/.432 with five home runs and seven stolen bases. He should play every day once up and is a priority pickup in most formats.
Justin Foscue went 3-for-3 with a home run in the loss to the Rockies on Monday.
Foscue has been good in limited time, hitting .280/.308/.600 with two home runs in 26 plate appearances. He is making a good amount of contact, he tends to put the ball on the ground too much. He will get a lot of run with Seager out, but he is best served for deeper leagues.
Brett Baty went 2-for-6 with a home run in the victory over the Nationals on Monday.
After a slow start to the season, Baty is hitting .317 with two home runs over the last two weeks. The power and contact metrics are up and this might be time to buy on the former top prospect.
J.T. Ginn threw eight innings versus the Angels, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out 10 in the no-decision on Monday.
Ginn did a great job of keeping the Angels off-balanced, throwing all five of his pitches at least 10% of the time and getting a 36% CSW on his sinker which was his most used pitch. The Angels do struggle against lefties and Ginn has been much better away from Sacramento, so he isn’t someone you want to use every start, but can be a useful streamer on the road.
