Roto Riteup: June 9, 2013

Today’s Roto Riteup can help you go the distance in your fantasy leagues. Side note: Hercules was recently added to the Netflix instant queue. So go watch it. It’s grand.

On today’s agenda:
1. David Price and the Tampa Bay rotation
2. Make a move for Wil Myers
3. The return of Logan Morrison
4. Gerrit Cole to debut Tuesday

David Price and the Tampa Bay rotation
Yesterday Rays manager Joe Maddon told reporters that David Price will make three rehab starts before rejoining the Rays. Price is yet to begin his rehab starts, thus putting him on track to return in late June or early July. As a result, Price’s rotation spot is up in the air for another three weeks. No word on whether or not it will be Chris Archer that continues to pitch in Price’s slot however. This is speculation but it seems likely for Archer to stay up, though Jake Odorizzi, Alex Colome, and Mike Montgomery are all potential replacements too.

Make a move for Wil Myers
Even prior to yesterday’s 3-for-5 day that was highlighted by a pair of home runs, some sources thought Wil Myers could be called up within the next 10 days. Right now Myers should be picked up by any dynasty/keeper format and AL-only leagues. Even those in deeper mixed leagues should take note, as Myers has the potential to be that good. He is owned in 16% of ESPN formats, 30% of Yahoo! leagues, and 70% of CBS leagues. If you have a deep enough bench, grab him now. For those of you in 12-team mixed leagues, don’t be too patient on him. He’ll probably have his ownership numbers skyrocket in the coming days.

The return of Logan Morrison
The Miami Marlins are anticipating the return of Logan Morrison on Monday when the team begins a new series against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Marlins have seen a revolving door of ineffective and injured players at first base as the Marlins have the third worst first baseman value in Morrison’s absence, so he will be a welcome return. Morrison’s fantasy value is a bit harder to peg, as he has never been a great source of power or batting average. He is a decent bat in general, but he is overshadowed by more powerful options at first base. In deeper leagues he is worth an add, though in standard 12-team mixed leagues, he is probably a pass at this point.

Also of note, the club does not expect to activate Giancarlo Stanton on Monday. They now believe it will be Tuesday at the earliest. The delay is due to the fact that Stanton hasn’t been able to appear in as many rehab games due to rain outs, not any sort of physical setback.

Gerrit Cole to debut Tuesday
Through 12 Triple-A starts, Gerrit Cole is the owner of an outstanding 2.91 ERA. On the other hand, he also has a 3.99 FIP and less than a 2:1 strikeout to walk rate ratio. Despite the lack of strikeouts and control, Cole is getting the promotion that he has waited for all his life. On Tuesday evening he will square off against the San Francisco Giants in his major league debut. Though his current numbers are underwhelming, Cole is capable of developing into a number one starter. He may have some growing pains and there is no official word whether or not he will stay with the big league club after Tuesday. James McDonald isn’t too far from returning and may bump Cole back down to the minors. Only time will tell, but for now Cole is worth owning, even for one start. Currently, Cole is owned in 55% of CBS formats, though his ESPN and Yahoo! ownership is below 20% and 30% respectively.

Would you drop Jurickson Profar for Wil Myers in a 10 team mixed roto? Thanks!

I read that the Rangers are discussing ways to keep Profar in the lineup even after Kinsler comes back. Any chance this happens?

This handsome commenter will certainly be watching Hercules today.

Myers > Profar in run production and power. I would, but I always have a surplus of the speedy, OBP guys anyways. I picked up Myers and anticipate good things for my 16-team league.

Was offered Yadier Molina for Manny Machado. Not sure if I should accept in a 16 team points league where my catcher is Yasmani Grandal and I have Arenado to plug in at 3rd.

no way. Yadier is good for a C, but Machado is putting up pretty nice numbers …and 3b depth is hard to find.

In a home run league, should I drop Middlebrooks or Freeman for Myers. This is a non-keeper league

12 team standard Yahoo league, is it crazy to drop Alcedis Escobar to pick up Myers? I have Jed Lowrie as my primary SS, but was holding onto Escobar in case Lowrie got hurt.

I’ve been waiting for Puig to steal a base just so I can say “Now Yasiel him, now you don’t”

Drop Rendon for Myers NOW or wait until Rendon finishes today’s doubleheader?

Just traded Carlos Gomez, Kelly Johnson and Alcides Escobar for Andrew McCutchen, Lorenzo Cain and Andreleton Simmons. Thoughts?

Drop Puig or Profar for Myers in 10 team no keeper? Puig’s pretty hot and in demand, and I’m thinking if the rangers try to keep profar around he might pick up some extra eligibility.

Who is the better stash for my one open DL spot; Chris Perez or JJ Putz? I currently own Heath Bell. Thanks.

Yea. Either way, should be fine to start him in weekly leagues.

Could anybody give a close estimate of how many starts a 1-4 starter on a team will get from now until the end of the year barring injuries?

Tyler Skaggs vs. SF & SD or Edwin Jackson (yea, I know) vs. PIT & NYM?

I read somewhere that Gerrit Cole is getting sent down regardless of what he does in his debut. Pretty disappointing if true

I am at a standstill, with most of my OF injured (Kemp and Harper) I have Dunn, Morrison, Cuddyer and Quentin to fill 2 spots (1B and 1 OF spot).

Scared to start Cuddyer because of injury concerns. Thoughts?

I shall go with your advise than.

I’m around the same level and have found success with a quick oracle followed up with a 3-gate phoenix all-in when they attempt to expand. I’ve faced that build you’re referring to (I’ve seen Artosis use it on his stream) and usually I’ll make a forge + 2nd oracle and counter attack once I stabilize.

I feel the same way about mutalisks. Why I ALWAYS open double stargate skytoss and do a 1 VR with phoenix reinforcement pressure. Usually able to bring down their 3rd.

4 Normally. I spend the chrono preliminarily on probes the entire time. I’ll use it 1-2 times on the initial void ray. After I’ll switch back to VR’s until I build up 6-8 of them.

Thats happened to me. Hey, neat, I have an unkillable army of 6 Colossus and 8 Voidrays w/ gateway units. Wait….thats…..goddamnit

I’ve even experimented with Stargate openings vs Terran with mixed success. I use it to build up a Colossus/Phoenix based army comp that was briefly popular in WoL. In the early mid-game you have to play VERY defensively though.
