Trades and Rumors!!!

According to multiple reports, the Nationals have begun telling teams that everyone on their roster is available outside of Juan Soto. This is somewhat surprising for multiple reasons. First, the Nationals have not  really been a team to sell in the past, but more shockingly, they are making Trea Turner available. Turner is under team control for another season and would be a huge get for any team, but would also cost considerably more than a rental like Trevor Story. It seems pretty likely that both Max Scherzer and Brad Hand could be dealt, considering they are both free agents at the end of the season.

The Cubs traded Andrew Chafin to the Athletics for Greg Deichmann and RHP Daniel Palencia. Chafin adds to the A’s bullpen and could be in line for holds. Deichmann is an interesting prospect with power and speed, but has struggled with contact prior to 2021. He has improved that a bit this season, however. Palencia is a 21-year-old prospect that has struggled in A-Ball this season, but reportedly has a good fastball and curve with questionable command. He was signed in February of 2020 out of Venezuela, so there may be a slower development track for him and there hasn’t been a ton of scouting work yet done on him, according to Eric Logenhagen.

Quick Hits

Spencer Howard left his start on Monday with a blister. He is not expected to miss his next start according to manager Joe Girardi. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Taylor Rodgers left the game on Monday with a finger sprain. This is unfortunate timing for Rodgers and the Twins as he has been speculated to be a trade candidate. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Jared Walsh left Monday’s game with a side injury. Joe Maddon stated the issue does not appear to be serious. Consider him day-to-day at this time.

Various News and Notes

Jorge Soler went 2-for-4 with two home runs on Monday in the victory over the White Sox.

Soler has struggled this season, but has been scorching hot recently, hitting four home runs in his last two games and six homers in his last six games. He has struggled with the new ball, but may be making the necessary adjustments. He could be a potential trade candidate as well considering he is in the last year of his deal and any potential trade would likely be an upgrade as long as he remains a full time player.

Kyle Muller threw five scoreless innings in the victory versus the Mets, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out three.

Muller wasn’t overly impressive, but got the job done against the Mets by sequencing well and not leaving pitches up. He is likely pitching for his job right now with Huascar Ynoa working his way back and the Braves likely looking to add starting pitching at the deadline.

Streaming Pitchers (Under 50% in CBS)

Pitcher for Today: Spenser Watkins vs MIA

There is some regression coming at some point for Watkins, but he has pitched well so far and this is a nice matchup against the Marlins.

High Risk Options: Jose Suarez vs COL, Dane Dunning vs ARI, Erick Fedde at PHI,  Logan Webb vs LAD

Pitcher for Tomorrow:  Eric Lauer at PIT.

Lauer has been really good recently and has a great matchup in Pittsburgh versus a selling Pirates team.

High Risk Options:  Zach Davies vs CIN, Tanner Houck vs TOR, Wily Peralta at MIN.

For those of you that would like to see how these picks play out, I have a doc I put together to track the stats from the recommended pitchers. It does not include the “High Risk Options.”

Take this with a grain of Salty since I don’t play DFS, but if I did, I’d take a long look at Tyler Anderson today. I think he’s under 50% owned in CBS, Milwaukee strikes out a lot, and are average in OBP and OPS vs lefties.

Plus, this is his last chance to showcase himself for a contender ahead of the trade deadline, so maybe there will be some extra motivation for his start tonight.

Heyman says the Pirates are looking to trade him today so he doesn’t make his start.

Good call. Definitely less optimistic with his 40% FB rate in that park.
