News and Notes

Eury Pérez will return to the Miami rotation tonight in a start against the Reds after spending the past month at Double-A for workload-management purposes. Pérez was spectacular in his first stint in the majors, posting a 2.36 ERA (3.70 FIP) and 1.09 WHIP over 11 starts and 53.1 IP, with a 28% K%. The Marlins could certainly use the young phenom, as something needs to pull them out of their second-half death spiral, having now lost 16-of-21 since the break, including an earlier eight-game losing streak and their current four-game one.

Bumps and Bruises

Carlos Rodón will have an MRI today on his hamstring after being pulled in yesterday’s start in the third inning. Rodón was already getting blasted prior to the injury, having allowed 5 ER and two home runs to the 13 batters he faced, and now has a 7.33 ERA in his six starts since returning from the IL on July 7.

Josh Jung fractured his left thumb yesterday in the sixth inning. He will need to see a specialist to determine the severity, with manager Bruce Bochy giving no further information about his possible timeline. This is a significant loss for the Rangers, as Jung was in the middle of his coming out party, currently slashing .274/.323/.489, with 22 HR, 70 R, and 67 RBI, starting all but five games.

Ketel Marte was pulled in the fifth inning of yesterday’s game against the Twins with quad tightness. Consider him day-to-day but Marte will also have an extra day of rest with Arizona off on Monday.

Tyler Glasnow was bumped from his start on Sunday due to back spasms but manager Kevin Cash doesn’t believe it’s anything serious and Glasnow could still be in line to start against the Cardinals in their first series this week. All he’s gotta do is make one lil’ doctor visit and he should be good to go – because if can’t trust Kevin Cash to give you proper information, who can you trust?

Bryan Abreu picked up a four-out Save on Sunday for Houston, with manager Dusty Baker saying Ryan Pressly (sore?) was unavailable. Consider him day-to-day with the Astros having another day off on Monday for him to get right.

Leave Salvador Perez’s hands alone! Perez took a pitch to the hand on Sunday that caused him to depart after just two innings but luckily the x-rays came back clean. Consider him day-to-day.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. was out of the lineup on Sunday after leaving Saturday’s contest in the third inning with what was called a right hamstring cramp. Like most stretches of his short career, continue considering him day-to-day.

Brandon Marsh (knee bruise) was placed on the IL on Sunday. This is a shame considering Marsh had finally put his disastrous May behind him (.208/.321/.278, .269 wOBA, 65 wRC+), slashing .295/.365/.449 over 178 PA since the start of June, with 3 HR, 18 R, 22 RBI, and 3 SB. Marsh is only expected to miss 2-3 weeks but speaking to a larger point, we’ve officially reached the part of the fantasy season where any such absence might make a player not worth stashing.

Comeback Trails

Jordan Romano (lower back) is tracking to return from the IL when first eligible on August 13 after completing another bullpen on Sunday.

After successfully completing another bullpen session on Sunday, Clayton Kershaw (shoulder) is set to likely return on Thursday in a start at home against the Rockies. Kershaw has been shelved since July 3, having posted a 2.55 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and 28% K% prior to hitting the list.

Chris Sale threw 53 pitches in his second rehab start, putting up 4.1 scoreless innings, with seven strikeouts. The Red Sox have yet to give any indication of whether he’ll need another rehab start but it seems that he’ll be returning to the big league rotation by next week, at the latest.

Michael Wacha (shoulder) made his first rehab start on Saturday since going on the IL in early July, tossing two scoreless innings but needing 46 pitches to do it, as he also walked three batters. Wacha could return as early as this weekend against the Diamondbacks.

Trevor Story (elbow) will remain on his rehab assignment at Triple-A for the first part of this week but will be activated on Thursday.

Streaming Pitchers

Streaming Pitcher for Today: Brandon Williamson, CIN vs MIA – Williamson did allow 5 ER in his most recent outing but had a 2.45 ERA (3.97 FIP) in his previous five starts and will face a Marlins team that, as previously mentioned, is currently in a second-half spiral of pain.

High Risk for Today: Woof – while there are plenty of streaming-type pitchers pitching on Monday, they are quite dicey, and no others that I’m going out of my way to dance with.

Streaming Pitcher for Tomorrow: Kutter Crawford, BOS vs KCR
