Closer Chaos

Michael Kopech threw a perfect inning versus the Cardinals to register the save on Sunday.

Kopech has been amazing since being traded to the Dodgers, throwing 9.1 scoreless innings with 13 strikeouts. Kopech appears to be taking over the closer role and that has a ton of value in LA.

Pete Fairbanks left Sunday’s game with a lat strain and is likely headed to the IL according to manager Kevin Cash. Edwin Uceta came into the game to replace Fairbanks and will likely be a part of the committee that fills in along with Garrett Cleavinger and Manuel Rodriguez.

Quick Hits
Yandy Diaz left Sunday’s game after being hit with a pitch in the arm:

X-rays were negative. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Brandon Nimmo left Sunday’s game with what he described as “general achiness:”

This doesn’t sound too serious. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Ha-Seong Kim left Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury.

He is expected to undergo an MRI on Monday. Consider him day-to-day for now, but this seems like it could end up in an IL stint.

Ketel Marte left Sunday’s game with an ankle injury. There was no status update following the game. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Austin Riley left Sunday’s game after being hit with a pitch in the hand.

X-Rays were inconclusive according to manager Brian Snitker. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Various News and Notes
Jose Caballero went 1-for-5 with three stolen bases in the victory over the Diamondbacks.

Caballero isn’t an every day player, but even when he doesn’t start, he often gets in as a pinch runner because of his ability to steal bases. He has seven stolen bases this month and should continue to rack them up as the season wears on.

Bowden Francis threw seven scoreless innings versus the Cubs, allowing three hits and no walks while striking out seven in the Victory on Sunday.

Francis has been fantastic since being recalled from the Majors, 23 innings with 24 strikeouts and only allowing six earned runs in that span. Francis has struggled with command throughout the minor leagues and that happened in his first go around in the Majors, but he has been much better since returning. If he can keep it up, he would be a big pick up down the stretch.

Jace Jung went 1-for-2 with the game tying single in the victory over the Yankees on Sunday.

Jung is a top 100 prospect for the Tigers who hit .257/.377/.454 with 14 home runs and two stolen bases in 415 plate appearances in AAA. Jung has power and the ability to walk but he struggles with consistent contact. If he can show good contact ability, he could be a difference maker in fantasy.

Streaming Pitchers (Under 50% in CBS)

Pitcher for Today: Zebby Matthews at SD

Not the best matchup, but Matthews was impressive in his first start.

High Risk Options: David Peterson vs BAL, Edward Cabrera vs ARI, Luis Ortiz at TEX, Trevor Rogers at NYM, Jonathan Cannon at SF.

Pitcher for Tomorrow: DJ Herz vs COL

The Rockies struggle in their first games of a road trip and Herz has pitched well lately.

High Risk Options: Cody Bradford vs PIT, Frankie Montas at STL, Martin Perez vs MIN, Matthew Boyd at NYY, Carson Spiers at TOR, Joey Estes vs TB.

For those of you that would like to see how these picks play out, I have a doc I put together to track the stats from my recommended pitchers. It does not include the “High Risk Options.”

Not so sure I’d just write Marte’s ankle injury off as day-to-day. He did manage a full game on Saturday (the 17th) but since leaving the game the prior Saturday (the 10th) with the ankle injury, he has missed 3 games and two other games talked his way into the game (1 start, 1 as a PH) and basically couldn’t make it through his 1st PA of the game – he flew out in the game he started but he was hobbling so badly down to 1B that they yanked him immediately and he couldn’t even complete the PA when he came in to pinch-hit in the 9th yesterday. He’s pretty clearly not right.
