News and Notes
Marcus Stroman was supposed to come off the IL yesterday to face the White Sox but now might be done for the season due to a cartilage fracture on his rib. Stroman initially felt discomfort after a bullpen session on Sunday with a later MRI revealing the damage. Javier Assad replaced Stroman in yesterday’s contest and will likely remain in rotation until further notice. A majority of Assad’s 66.2 IP have come in relief this season but he has posted a 2.70 ERA (4.64 FIP) in his last three starts, going at least 6 IP in the past two. He’s also just in time for a juicy two-step in Week 22, scheduled for starts on the road in Detroit and Pittsburgh.
Another no-no for Reid Detmers? Well, not quite but Detmers did hold the Texas offense hitless until Marcus Semien’s double in the eighth inning. That’s quite a bounceback for Detmers who had most recently allowed a total of 14 ER over 6.1 IP in his previous two starts. Detmers next lines up to face Cincinnati at home next Wednesday.
After making a bullpen appearance on Tuesday (2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K, W) Hunter Brown is now scheduled to start on Sunday against the Mariners. With a relief win already tucked away, those who sat him thinking he wouldn’t be in the rotation this week are probably not cursing.
Bumps and Bruises
A pair of Cardinals left with injuries last night against Oakland; Tommy Edman with a calf bruise and Lars Nootbaar with a…well, with this:

Lars Nootbaar was removed from the game with a "lower abdomen" contusion… which sure, I guess is one way to explain it.

Jose Altuve exited Tuesday’s game early after taking a foul ball off his knee and was pulled early again on Wednesday due to leg soreness. The move was called precautionary and Altuve will have an off day today to get right.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was pulled in the fifth inning yesterday with a left hip contusion, appearing to injure himself during a fourth-inning groundout. Consider him day-to-day.
MacKenzie Gore was cruising last night against Boston, allowing just one hit in 6.1 IP but departed after a cut nail turned into a blister. Gore didn’t seem too worried about it and believes he’ll make his next scheduled start.
Jose Siri was removed after spraining his left pinky finger sliding into second base yesterday but manager Kevin Cash downplayed the injury as not a serious issue. Consider him day-to-day with the Rays getting a day off today.
Comeback Trails
Carlos Rodón (hamstring) threw a five-inning sim game yesterday in Tampa and barring any setbacks could return to the Yankees rotation early next week.
The Reds announced that Hunter Greene (hip) will be activated to start on Sunday at home against Toronto. In his last rehab start on Tuesday, Greene allowed one unearned run on one hit over 5.2 IP (83 pitches) and shouldn’t have any workload restrictions against the Blue Jays.
Bo Bichette (knee) collected two hits in his first rehab game on Wednesday and could return in time for Toronto’s series this weekend in Cincinnati.
Matt Chapman (finger) hasn’t played since Saturday after missing another game on Wednesday. Toronto has a day off on Thursday for him to continue healing up but a weekend appearance still isn’t guaranteed.
Brandon Marsh is tracking to return much earlier than initially expected and is scheduled to serve as the DH for Triple-A (Lehigh Valley) today. Marsh initially hit the list on August 6 but could now return not far past the minimum stay.
I have hilarious joke: Remember when we thought Adalberto Mondesi (knee) might only miss the start of the season? Or maybe just a month or two? By the All-Star break for sure??? Ba-ha-ha-ha-ha… We are all laughing. Mondesi has been shut down (again) after a return to live pitching has apparently done him in. For now? Ok, just kidding. For always.
Eloy Jiménez missed Wednesday’s game with more groin discomfort. No word yet on whether he’s considering changing his name to day-to-day.
Tim Anderson (neck) returned to the White Sox lineup on Wednesday to go 0-for-4 but did stay conscious for the entire game.

Streaming Pitcher For Today: José Quintana, NYM @STL – It’s a short-slate Thursday that includes Patrick Corbin and Adam Wainwright, so we’re already limited on options. However, Quintana has been quietly solid since his return from injury purgatory, posting a 3.03 ERA (2.93 FIP) over five starts and going at least six innings in all but one (5 IP). Unfortunately, he pitches for the Mets, so of course he’s gone 0-4 over that stretch. But still! More like Quinta-yeah, amirite?
High Risk for Today: None. Not unless you consider 4 ER and 3 K over 4 IP from Rich Hill to be a desirable outcome.

The signing of Mondesi was apparently an effort to tempt us Red Sox fans with a Casas / Mondesi / Story / Devers infield for 2024. 2023?! We were supposed to believe that hot pickup early in the season was for this year’s World Series? What fools we were!
I’m pretty sure your comment was tongue in cheek since Mondesi is a free agent after the season, but I so badly wanted to like him.. I had two posters of his dad in my room for about 15 years, he’s on my Dodgers Mt. Rushmore with Koufax/Kersh/Piazza. But at a certain point, I have to admit to myself that besides running, fielding, and roto fantasy points, he’s bad at baseball.
Not that running/fielding aren’t important, but the dude had oblique and hamstring injuries in 2021 and has 54 plate appearances since. He’s currently working on a Guinness record for longest recovery from an ACL tear. Said tear happened on a pickoff play.
I’ve never read it was a complete tear nor seen “ACL replacement surgery”, only surgery to repair a tear. I think it’s safe to say it wasn’t a replacement. But even if it was, I’ve had ACL replacement surgery, and for him to be where he is 18-months later – not even doing baseball activities yet – something is wrong. Even if he wasn’t already past his speed peak, his legs will never be the same. Besides that, I doubt any team would even consider signing him with the intention of letting him run like he used.
I think he has “minor league contract with invite to camp and escalators based on PA’s if he makes the team and an opt-out” written all over him and his chances of replacing Samuel Jackson as Mr. Glass in the Unbreakable franchise are on par with him producing a 3+ WAR season at this point. Would anyone be shocked if he doesn’t have 54 more PA the rest of his career at this point? I wouldn’t..
Ahh, the ol’ Three Card Mondesi. Quite the distracting trick.
