Quick Hits

In Monday’s Riteup we congratulated Josh Jung and Logan O’Hoppe for their first home runs. Well, rinse-repeat, mes amis:

Oppo taco, anyone?

This might’ve been a bomb blast but that nickname is still unacceptable:

Likely upset that Tommy Edman had a lower ADP during draft season, Wander Franco is now slashing .417/.481/.792 to start the young season, with two home runs, two doubles, and two steals.

#PosthypeSleeper

Double dong, anyone?

How about one (or two) more?

I’m sure Corbin Burnes drafters are being super chill about his 9.64 ERA and just 6 K over his first two starts.

Ya know, I’m starting to think players just aren’t going to stop running. Gleyber Torres swiped two more on Wednesday, bringing him to a league-leading 5 SB through the first week of games. Or, half as many as he had in 2022.

And finally, please do not mess with the Jesus:

The IL Cometh

Don’t call Cube; yesterday was a bad day:

This was not great to watch. Especially if you believe, as I do, that Jazz Chisholm is a national treasure who must be protected at all costs. Of course, you assume it’s his right shoulder upon the first watch but then you see the slo-mo replay of face-meeting-shin and wonder how he even stayed conscious.

Regardless, the recent updates are much more positive than the first snap judgments that were guessing a season-ending injury. It’s being called a shoulder stinger and Chishom isn’t currently expected to miss significant time. Also, baseball management lies massages the truth all the time and generally should not be trusted.

Oneil Cruz also left Pittsburgh’s win over the Red Sox after his face met Rafael Devers’s boot on a slide into third in the seventh inning. No word yet on the extent of the injury.

Stop me if you’ve heard this before; Eloy Jiménez has officially hit the IL.

Closer Kumite

Attention! Attention! Jesse Chavez is not only alive and well but also got one out in Atlanta’s win over the Cardinals to earn his first save since 2019. But this was just happenstance; A.J. Minter is still in the driver’s seat until Raisel Iglesias returns.

That sound you hear is a thousand tears from those rostering Anaheim’s hypothetical closer, Carlos Estévez, after Jose Quijada picked up the save in the Angels 4-3 win over the Mariners. But manager Phil Nevin said this was just a workload issue, wanting to give Estevez another night off after he pitched on Sunday and Monday. Not much to read into this besides the fact that 28 pitches and 15 pitches on back-to-back games required two whole days of rest.

Happy Coors Weekend!

Spring has sprung and Colorado is finally headed home. So, you know what that means – it’s time to stream mediocre hitters…because Coors! And considering the state of Washington’s lineup, your options on the wire should be plentiful:

  • Lane Thomas (9% on Yahoo) – I’m a known Lane-hater but the one thing he can do is smash lefties, of which the Rockies will be throwing two over the weekend (Kyle Freeland, Austin Gomber).
  • Jeimer Candelario (2%) – Candelario went yard for the first time on Tuesday but you’re mostly betting on the fact that he’s the #3 hitter in Coors and will be facing four mediocre pitchers in Freeland, Gomber, José Ureña, and Ryan Feltner.
  • Dominic Smith (2%) – Same deal as with Candelario – Smith is the cleanup hitter for a bad team but is facing even worse pitching in the thin air of Denver.

Streaming Pitchers

Pitcher for Today: Tylor Megill vs MIA Alex Wood @ CHW

Megill’s start got nuked by a postponement on Wednesday, so let’s pivot to Alex Wood. But while I might like his chances of performing well, banking on Wood lasting enough innings to qualify for the win is always a dangerous game.

High Risk Options: Spencer Turnbull vs BOS – the sexy sleeper from the preseason got rocked in his 2023 debut, allowing 7 ER in 2.1 IP vs the Rays, but should at least be able to count on plenty of run support with Chris Sale on the other side.

Pitcher for Tomorrow: Zach Eflin vs OAK

Estevez owners should be happy with what happened yesterday – manager basically confirmed that Estevez is the closer.
