Roto Riteup: April 21, 2021

Taking suggestions for what we should call the opposite of a “Victory Lap.”

On the Agenda:

  1. COVID Issues
  2. Quick Hits
  3. Various News and Notes
  4. Streaming Pitchers

COVID Issues

Max Kepler, Kyle Garlick, and Caleb Thiebar were placed on the COVID IL. Garlick had been previously mentioned as a confirmed positive case, but Kepler had not. Hopefully Kepler will be able to return sooner rather than later, but make sure you have a back up option in place.

Jose Alvarado, Matt Moore, and Ronald Torreyes were placed on the COVID IL prior to the Phillies game versus the Giants. It is good news that they played the game, so hopefully this isn’t any larger of an issue than this.

Quick Hits

Mike Moustakas was placed on the 10-Day IL with a non-COVID related illness. This is a bit concerning that they expect him to be out for this long. Hopefully it is a minimum stay on the IL, but keep an eye out for any additional information.

Jean Segura left Tuesday’s game with a quad strain. He is expected to undergo further testing on Wednesday.

Anthony Santander left Tuesday’s game with an ankle injury. It is being characterized as a sprain, which would likely mean an IL stint depending on the severity of the sprain. Consider him day-to-day for now, but this sounds like he will likely miss some time.

Adrian Morejon has decided to get Tommy John Surgery. This isn’t surprising, but it is disappointing. He will likely miss most of next season on top of the rest of this season.

Juan Soto was placed on the IL with a shoulder strain. This is surprising news because there was no real news about him even being hurt. Manager Davey Martinez stated that there isn’t a long term worry about the issue, but clearly this is concerning.

 Various News and Notes

Patrick Corbin threw six scoreless innings allowing four hits and no walks while striking out five. Corbin really struggled in his first two starts but was fantastic in this one and was working with increased velocity. Corbin could be a hot commodity off of the waiver wire in leagues he was dropped in.

Mitch Moreland went 3-for-4 in Tuesday’s double header hitting two bombs in the first game. Moreland has really struggled this season, but was able to take advantage of Matt Shoemaker who was really struggling with his command and control. Moreland is only 20% rostered in CBS leagues right now and the A’s have been letting him play through it a bit over the last week.

Zach Plesac threw five innings versus the White Sox allowing six earned runs on seven hits, but no walks and striking out four. Plesac has been struggling with his command within the zone which is a bit concerning because it is making him more hittable. On the plus side, he is able to go deep into games because he has good control.  He has been throwing his fastball more in his first few starts and I think that is a mistake that needs to be corrected. His secondary stuff is what was so dominant last year and throwing it more is definitely needed.

Sanchez has looked very good so far this year and gets a Marlins team missing their best bat in Marte.

Justin, any insight to Canning following Ohtani last night? He was projected to start 04/23 at Houston.
