Roto Riteup: April 19, 2023

Yesterday was a rough day for my pitching:

On the Agenda:

  1. Closer Chaos
  2. Quick Hits
  3. Various News and Notes
  4. Streaming Pitchers

Closer Chaos

Dany Jimenez was placed on the IL with a shoulder strain. It isn’t surprising that something was wrong with Jimenez considering how he had pitched so far this season. Trevor May and Zach Jackson are likely the guys to gain opportunities in his absence.

Jose Quijada worked a clean ninth inning to register the save for the Angels on Tuesday. Carlos Estevez had struggled in his previous appearance, so this may be a changing of the guard in Los Angeles or it may just be a night off after a 26-pitch appearance on Monday. Quijada should be picked up just in case.

Quick Hits

Chas McCormick was placed on the 10-Day IL with a back issue. This is not the same issue that kept McCormick out the last few games which is a bit concerning. There is no timetable for his return.

Jeffrey Springs is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery. This escalated quickly from a two month injury to a season ending one. It is disappointing as he had been fantastic prior to the injury. He will likely return in 2024.

Carlos Carrasco was placed on the IL with an elbow issue. There is no timetable for his return.

Alex Wood left his start after sustaining a hamstring injury on this play:

Wood is likely headed to the IL because of this. There is no timetable for his return as of yet.

Brent Rooker left Tuesday’s game with hamstring tightness. This sounds precautionary. Consider him day-to-day at this time.

Garrett Mitchell left Tuesday’s with a shoulder injury. According to manager Craig Counsell, Mitchell suffered an injury on a throw in the tenth inning and he could feel it separate a bit. Consider him day-to-day but this sounds like a more serious injury than just a few days off.

Various News and Notes
Mason Miller will make his Major League debut on Wednesday according to multiple reports.

Well, I will eat a little crow after saying in my Monday chat that I did not think he would be up this early. Miller has fantastic stuff with an elite fastball and two plus secondary pitches. His main issues are command and health. He had a fantastic Arizona Fall League and looked good in his first start in 2023. While there have to be some concerns about whether he can hold up or how many innings the A’s will let him pitch this year coming off of just 14 innings in the minors and 16.2 in the AFL, he is an intriguing pick up in deeper formats.

Jack Suwinski went two-for-four with two home runs in the victory over the Rockies on Tuesday.

Suwinski had a fantastic night but this is who he is. A strong side platoon power bat that will strike out nearly 30% of the time. He is hot right now so it is not a bad time to ride the streak, but he will go cold at some point and hurt you in the average department.

Taylor Walls went 4-for-5 with two home runs in the victory over the Reds on Tuesday.

Walls is widely considered a defense only guy, but he has been pretty impressive so far with big improvements in his zone contact this season. I wouldn’t expect a big power output, but with his defensive skills and an improved strikeout rate, he could find himself with more opportunities in Tampa.

Josiah Gray threw five innings versus the Orioles on Monday, allowing one run on four hits and four walks while striking out three in the loss.

While the walks aren’t a great sign, Gray has changed his pitch mix, throwing his fastball less and it has resulted in him allowing just one home run so far this season after leading the Majors in home runs allowed in 2022. His strikeout rate has taken a hit as a result, but the stuff is still nasty and I would expect that to tick up at some point.

Streaming Pitchers (Under 50% in CBS)

Pitcher for Today: Spencer Turnbull vs CLE

Playing the matchup here with Cleveland struggling offensively, but it is a short slate that doesn’t have many safe streaming options.

High Risk Options: Jhony Brito vs LAA, Griffin Canning at NYY, Jake Woodford vs ARI.

Pitcher for Tomorrow: None

Short slate with not a lot of great options.

High Risk Options: Roansy Contreras vs CIN, Tanner Houck vs MIN, Ryne Nelson vs SD, Matt Strahm vs COL, Michael Grove at CHC.

For those of you that would like to see how these picks play out, I have a doc I put together to track the stats from my recommended pitchers. It does not include the “High Risk Options.”

The Rays have had so many guys go down. How come? Aren’t they super careful with pitch counts and innings?

This has been speculated on before, but my theory is because of their low payroll situation, they tend to acquire more pitchers with health red flags. I don’t think it’s due to mismanaging pitch counts or that they have a bad medical staff.

Suppose that could be… and would probably help explain their success at discovering talent where most other franchises do not…
