Paul Sporer: Any of the SS, tbh. I love Leiter and Rocker, but I just really want the Tigers to take a foundational hitter

Jim Leyland Palmer: Jram has been and still is the more valuable asset, but in a long term keeper context, would you view Bregman as the safer option, as his value is less tied to SBs? I have both and will be approaching a point where I may have to decide between the two this winter, am I overthinking it?

Paul Sporer: I think you might be overthinking it a bit. I really think Ramirez will age well, too, even w/a big SB component in his game

bg119: Is Austin Gomber a must-start?

Paul Sporer: I wouldn’t say that. I know he had an excellent start v. SD in Coors, but I still don’t trust that park at all. Team streamer for sure

Mustin Jason: Brendan Rodgers is having a pretty good June. Any chance he is becoming a viable MI option?

Paul Sporer: For sure. Talented prospect who could get a shot if he stays healthy

Jeff: Paul, how would you rank the 5 White Sox starters ? I have Rodon, Lynn, Cease, Keuchel, Giolito, but people say I’m nuts to have Giolito 5th

Paul Sporer: You are, there’s just no logical defense to putting Keuchel over Giolito. It doesn’t track at all.

Guest: What is Mullins long-term outlook?  Top 20 OF or is that too aggressive?

Paul Sporer: I’m not ready to go that high as an expectation. He’s been excellent, but we need more before we start looking at him in that high of esteem

Mann Matting: Give me your Matt Manning BOLD prediction as a hyped DET fan!

Paul Sporer: Boldest I could go would be like 6 scoreless with 8-10 Ks. Obviously that hideous 3.1 HR/9 in AAA stands out, but his core skills were still strong so if he gets the HRs in check, he can be good on arrival

Guest: Andrew Vaughn has been pretty disappointing so far.  Do you think he was rushed?  How do you think this affects his value going forward?

Paul Sporer: I find it odd how quickly we turn to “were they rushed” after aggressively pushing for teams to call guys up. I can’t speak for you directly, obviously, but I see this phenomenon on Twitter regularly where ppl will talk out of both sides of their mouth a bit. It’s hard to play in the majors. I think the real issue is expectation-setting. We as the fantasy baseball community put way too high of expectations on these guys so when they fall short, there is a sharp overreaction. He’s been essentially average and it doesn’t really concern me about his future. I’d buy everywhere, even in redraft leagues bc the price has dropped

Jim Leyland Palmer: I’ve been seeing people saying that Trevor Rodgers is a good sell high, due to an upcoming innings restriction in the 2nd half. Any merit to that?

Paul Sporer: I doubt he goes 200, so sure to that end there is. Honestly, there are no uniform rules for things like this. If you can sell high to improve your team, it makes sense. But if you have some of the injured superstar arms and Rogers is picking up that slack by being an ace himself, trading him doesn’t make sense

Houzer: Is a Matthew Boyd for Drew Waters trade at all possible .. pending nothing substantial is wrong with Boyd?

Paul Sporer: I feel like that’s reasonable, especially with another year of control for Boyd

Houzer: RE: Lawler as your Tigers pick. Would you rather see them draft Lawler, or sign Seager and draft Leiter?

Paul Sporer: Pick Lawler and sign Correa/Seager/Story. They can move to 3B by the time Lawler is ready.

Eric: Olson has cut his K% from around 25% each year to a bit under 17% this year.  How much of that do you think is sustainable?

Paul Sporer: I’ve been on the Olson is a Superstar train for a bit so I’m bought in. I don’t want to get caught up totally in confirmation bias and I don’t think the 17% mark is his new level, but I believe he can live in the low-20%s and with his power, that makes him great because he can pair a strong AVG w/the HRs.

Marinating: Should I drop Kelenic in a 10 teamer?

Paul Sporer: Probably, yeah

Dave: Better IL stash for ROS: Strasburg (currently on my roster… ugh), Kluber, or Carrasco?

Paul Sporer: Probably Kluber, though none are particularly strong IMO as Kluber has a 6-week timetable at best and the others have no timetable at all right now

FancyGraphs: Why do you need the wOBA Scale? If you have all the Constants for each event and go through the formula, the answer is always similar to OBP anyway so I don’t know where the Scale comes in, because I though the Scale was to get the number like OBP, similar to FIP and the FIP Constant. And piggybacking off of that, if you have all the Constants and the wOBA of a season, can you find the Scale with just that information? Is there a formula to find the wOBA Scale?

Paul Sporer: Don’t want to ignore your Qs (saw the first one, too), but I don’t have the ability to capably answer them so I’d have to direct you elsewhere. I think Jeff Zimmerman is well versed in that avenue and could impart some wisdom there

Sean: We cutting bait with Nick Solak? He’s been awful for about a month and a half after a solid first month.

Paul Sporer: Probably Walker. Pavin Smith is squeezing him paired w/the fact that he’s been awful.

Paul Sporer: Sorry for the delay – had to use the restroom and get some water

Sum: I’m sitting Snell tonight @ COL (but started Gomber at home last time out). defensible? you in or out on Snell tonight?

Paul Sporer: No chance I’d have started Gomber so credit to y’all that took the risk and hit. I believe in Snell on the whole, but I understand leaving the table a winner after your Coors gamble instead of doubling down. The consistent walks could be particularly problematic in Coors

zurzles: Is Lux worth holding onto in a 10T? He almost looked like he was having a legit breakout but has mellowed out a bit

Paul Sporer: Depends who you’re picking up, but there’s probably someone on the wire worth taking a shot on over Lux at this point

Micah: Any concerns with Means when he comes back from the IL? I’ve heard other experts recommend selling high (or as high as you can given the IL trip).

Paul Sporer: It depends on your expectations of him going forward. I think he’s a high-strikeout, mid-to-high 3.00s ERA with a great WHIP.

HappyFunBall: Starlin Castro on the restricted list now, and wasn’t even hitting anyway.  Easy cut

Sad, Confused Marlins Fan: How do you handle players you traded for and are struggling? (10 team H2H)

Paul Sporer: I definitely give it a reasonable sample (which is admittedly a bit arbitrary bc it’s not a set # of gms), but I’m not above cutting them even though I traded for them. 10-teamers is about that burn & churn

Micah: All things equal, if you were looking to sell high on Mullins which players would you target?

Paul Sporer: These are impossible to answer bc it entirely depends on your league. But with Mullins, you can ask high as he’s delivering top of the scale production (11th OF on Razzball Player Rater), so go look for an impact arm or big time infielder that you think best helps your team

Loop: Hey Paul! What’s your outlook on Paddack ROS? Has he truly returned to 2019 form?

Paul Sporer: I’d say he’s more the ERA indicators of ’19 as opposed to the 3.33 ERA he had. So the 4.14 he has right now isn’t too far off from expectations given his HR issues. He’s still a 2-pitch guy with a homer problem so that will breed volatility. He’s a high-3.00s to mid-4.00s kind of guy. That’s a wide range, but that’s what the HRs can do

Traders gonna Trade: Hi Paul, thanks for the chat. 10 team Keeper league. I feel like I need to make a move, BUT, I have Lindor, Suarez, Franmil, Ke’Bryan and Pham. Do I need to trade, or will I be just as good keeping these currents guys? f I get the player they are supposed to be the rest of the way, I should be fine.

Paul Sporer: Yeah, we still haven’t seen the best of Lindor, Suarez, and Ke’Bryan this year. Franmil was great and just needs to get healthy and I think Pham has been what we should expect. Don’t trade just to trade. Make sure you’re helping your team. Consolidating talent in a 10-teamer should usually be the goal so if you can move 2-3 guys for a superstar, I’m good w/that

Vader: Any players currently in the minors, other than Wander, that need to be stashed in H2H ROS?

Paul Sporer: I’d be down to stash Vidal Brujan, but otherwise I’m waiting to see guys get called up

Guest: WIll Brandon Crawford end up a top 10 SS? He’s #5 in WAR now

Paul Sporer: In WAR? Yes, because he has the defense, too. I think he’ll hold Top 10 in wRC+, too, but definitely feel better about the WAR one

Traders gonna Trade: Hi Paul, thanks for the chat. I might have accidentally submitted this question before I was done a minute ago sorryyyyy
10 team league head to head. Feels like a need to make a move, BUT, I have Lindor, Suarez, Franmil, Ke’Bryan, and Pham.
Lindor and Suarez stink, but if I get the player they are supposed to be the for the rest of the way, that’s like two top 50 players.
Franmil is hurt, but why trade if you are getting that production back later?
Pham is hot, and Ke’Bryan could get it going.
I guess the question is; if you have underperforming/injured guys, should you be actively trading, or waiting for them to turn it around

Paul Sporer: Oh dang, sorry I didn’t see that. I think I may have still answered the Q even w/out the added context in that I wouldn’t trade just to trade. I can definitely see big summers from Lindor, Suarez, and Hayes

Bruno: Hey, Jesus (Sanchez) got a hit! Are you buying his resurrection?

Paul Sporer: It’s going too far to frame it like that bc he has all of 30 PA in the majors to this point. He’s a blank slate. And yes, I am buying him. I love the power and think he could be a key addition to the Marlins

Paul Sporer: I’d can him

DatDude: Is Bobby Bradley a GUY or just a guy?

Paul Sporer: I think there is some GUY potential, particularly for our purposes in fantasy. I don’t buy this 15% K rate so keep your AVG expectations severely tempered, but I do see 30 HR potential

Sad, Confused Marlins Fan: Currently stashing Wander. If Brujan gets called up first, which he probably will, would you drop franco for him?

Paul Sporer: I would, yes

Jon: Does Posey end up as NL HR leader at C? He’s tied with Contreras, 3 ahead of C Kelley.

Paul Sporer: I’m gonna say yes, but I think Contreras and Will Smith are right there w/him

Bubba: What are your expectations for Maeda ROS?  How would you rank him vs. Desclafani?

Paul Sporer: Encouraged by yesterday, espec. after the 3 BB in the 1st and settling down for the next 3. I think he’ll be a mid-to-high 3.00s rest of season w/a K per inning

Wicho: Level of concern for MacKenzie Gore? You guys just dropped him past Campusano on the Padres’ top prospects list.

Paul Sporer: I generally carry a decent measure of skepticism about prospect arms but it’s amped a bit for Gore given his command issues and talk of the yips. Could be a good time to buy, though, as the price has never been lower

Mr. Burrito: Is Stripling worth a flyer? Over past few weeks he’s been good, and has a history of similar runs…. though he’s also been stinky over various periods….

Paul Sporer: Yeah, I’d take a shot. I’m a long-term Stripling fan and I was giddy when he got out of LA bc it looked like he’d get a full scale opportunity in the rotation. Well then he flopped last year and started rough this year, but then altered his mechanics and has been pretty good of late. He has the big dud v. BOS (6 ER) back in mid-May but the rest of his outings have been pretty good. All told, it’s 4.02 ERA/1.12 WHIP in 31.3 IP. I think higher ERA w/a great WHIP and solid Ks should be the expectation and don’t be afraid to skip some tougher outings and use him as a team streamer

Bob The Rebuilder: Hi Paul! Big fan of the pod. What’s your dynasty outlook on Jazz? 10 team, 10 keeper league. Got him off the wire like everyone else and wondering if he’s worth it over Hampson or

Paul Sporer: Definitely prefer him to Hampson. Hampson is running so it’s giving him real fantasy value, but his slash line is awful

Saul: QS league,  Cease or Manoah ROS?  thanks!

Paul Sporer: I’ll go with Manoah. He has that workhorse style that I think makes him a better fit for QS. His IP will be managed over the summer, but I think it’ll be more with breaks in between starts as opposed to shortened outings that routinely fall below 6 IP even when he’s pitching well enough to go deeper.

Paul Sporer: Is he C-elig.?

How about them cheaters: Thoughts on using banned substances to improve pitching and the impact on Hall of Fame nominations. Is this really any difference then using steroids?

Paul Sporer: Absolutely zero chance it’d impact HOF viability for me. It’s not so different from steroids in that it’s massively overblown and wildly misunderstood by the majority of people talking about it. I’m not saying it does nothing, but as w/PEDs, far too many people think using sticky stuff can take a 4th starter at AAA and turn him into an MLB All-Star

ayyyy: with the tigers looking like they may have the makings of a good rotation, are they finally going to buy some guys this offseason?

Paul Sporer: I very much hope they pony up for one of the big free agent SS

Searching for Power: Where did Gleyber Torres power go?

Paul Sporer: Great question. I really don’t know. Not just this year, either, as he had a .125 ISO last year. I think it requires a deeper dive than I can do here so I think we’ll discuss him on the pod

Guest: Better ROS: Willie Calhoun or Michael Conforto?

Paul Sporer: Conforto is heading out on rehab soon, it’s gotta be him

golfboi: Should I worry about luzardo? Haven’t seen him pitch out of the pen yet but the numbers are yikes…

Paul Sporer: Yeah, he’s a cut in all redraft formats right now. I have seen his pen appearances and it’s not great right now. I’m not out long-term, but it’s rough right now. Worth buying if you’re in a rebuild phase in keeper/dynasty bc his price is bottoming out

Sticky stuff: Hi Paul, do you think Fraley can be an asset ROS and do you think Bundy can stop being a massive liability ROS? Thanks, sir.

Paul Sporer: Yes and ehhh, probably not. The playing time is there for Fraley and he has a power-speed combo that makes him very fantasy relevant. He gets on base, is being allowed to run, and has some pop. Playing time is there, too. I was quite interested in him this past weekend in FAAB. Still lamenting losing him by a dollar – $59 to $58 – in the Main Event.

Catching Smoke: Hi Paul. Desperate for Catchers in AL OBP. Jake Rogers, Tortuga, Heim, Riley Adams… … Oof.

Paul Sporer: La Tortuga (Willians Astudillo for those unaware) is the play here, but damn that’s painful

Don: Don’t know much about fantasy, but saw you chatting. What are some traits in a player that make them valuable to a team but generally don’t translate and make them worthwhile in fantasy? What are some good sites and league types to start off with?

Paul Sporer: Thanks for coming by! Most traits that would help a team have some measure of fantasy usefulness, even if it’s not outright a category in a league, but these traits can be underrated and make the player a bargain. A great eye at the plate doesn’t always translate into fantasy goodness if you don’t play in an OBP league, but it enhances run scoring chances and gives more opportunities to steal bases if the player is so inclined.

Defense isn’t counted in anything but the most niche of fantasy leagues, but great defense can ensure playing time which is the most prized commodity the game has, so I love when a hitter I like can also play strong defense and force a larger share of a time crunch.

I love Roto-style leagues and starting at 10 or 12 teams is great. If you’ve played fantasy football and like the head-to-head nature, starting in a H2H points league is also good. I’ve come around big time on H2H pts lgs the last few years. I used to be pretty strictly roto. But I like playing different game styles.

ayyyy: I’m currently stashing Brujan, Franco, and Torkelson while my team of stars is all underperforming and I’m probably one or two more losses away from being out of the playoffs. Am I a monster?

Paul Sporer: You’re not a monster. You’re punting and if your league doesn’t have anything against that, well then it’s your entry fee. You’re sacrificing this year’s entry fee in the hopes of winning or at least heavily contending for titles in the next several years. So again, if it’s not against the league rules, it’s fine

Guest: I really, really want to drop Hosmer.  What will I be missing if I do?  [Besides frustration]

Paul Sporer: I’d need league size and who you’re picking up, but I’m not averse to dropping him in 10 and 12 teamers

Better Call Paul: Shallow ten teamer OBP league, Conforto was on the wire which confused me.  What are your thoughts on him ROS?

Paul Sporer: Scoop! He’s on that rehab assignment as I mentioned earlier so now is the time to pounce before he’s back on the radar and someone else gets him or his FAAB price goes sky-high

Guest: I’m sad Giolito is not considered the WS ace.

Paul Sporer: He’s still very good, but I see Lynn as the ace

Guest: would you drop Cron or Vaughn for Larnach in an obp league?

Paul Sporer: No. I like Larnach (wrote him up last week), but I still favor Cron over him. Think I’ve got him even w/Vaughn

Paul Sporer: He’s still probably going to finish w/a double-double and 85+ R/RBI

Better Call Paul: If/when Bellinger comes back, does he provide more value in the OF or 1B?

Paul Sporer: I’d think OF, espec. in 5 OF leagues given how shallow it’s been getting out there in some leagues

Jon Matlack: Would you drop McClanahan for Manning?  I know no context.

Paul Sporer: No, I wouldn’t

Bob: Outlook for skubal? Future ace?

Paul Sporer: I’d tab veeeerrrryyyy few guys with an ace future. It’s just SO rare. But I think he’s a future fantasy frontliner (which is a top 3 guy that you virtually never take out) with the excellent K upside. I think we’ll continue to see some volatility this year but then a big step forward in ’22

Carl: Buying Harold Ramirez, can it last?

Paul Sporer: In deeper 5 OF leagues, yes. Worthy AVG asset w/double-double potential

Josh: Who would you pick ROS Villar or odubel herrera?

Paul Sporer: I’ll take Villar for the extra positional flexibility but they are pretty similar overall

Jake: When are we seeing Bruhan? Worth stashing in 12 team limited bench?

Paul Sporer: I wish I knew! It’s just hard to say because any plan can get disrupted by an injury. Lowe getting back on track and Walls more than capably holding his own has Franco completely blocked off, IMO, but Brujan could finagle his way into the OF and be up soon-ish. He’s played 21 gms there (18 starts) and Brett Phillips might not be able to fend him off much longer

Ken R: What are your thoughts on Kirilloff? I have been hearing he is having issues with his wrist, but he is still hitting for average.

Paul Sporer: My concern was that the wrist injury would sap some power upon return and it’s playing out so far. The question is whether it’s temporary or will linger the rest of the year. I’m reluctant to cut bait given his upside and as you mention, he’s at least still hitting for AVG.

Guest: haniger/Donaldson/yarb too much to give for judge in a 12 team?

Paul Sporer: That feels a bit heavy, espec. w/the way Haniger is raking. I like the idea of consolidating to get a superstar, but I’d want to drop down from Haniger to a lesser piece w/JD and Yarbs

League offense: Can we really blame the decrease in league offense on stick stuff? Or are the hitters just bad this year? Vlad, Tatis, Winker, Acuna, Xander, Devers and many more tend to prove the stars are still starts so maybe the average player is just worse? Thoughts?

Paul Sporer: Well no one is blaming it solely on sticky stuff so the premise is flawed from the jump, but also no, hitters aren’t just bad. Pitching has a massive edge right now leading to an all or nothing game. Attacking the use of egregious substances like spidertack is something they can do to actually address the sky-rocketing K rates. It’s not a perfect smoking gun and it won’t drasticallyyyyy change the game, but it can help curb the unending rise in K% a bit

Matt: Hey Paul! Just joined so forgive if this has been asked, but what’s your view on Brujan/Franco getting a promotion – if/when? ROS forecast?

Paul Sporer: Ctrl-F 🙂

Better Call Paul: agree or disagree: The Show is unplayable if you only have time for two or three games a week because hitting is so damn hard and a lot of practice is needed to be good.

Paul Sporer: It depends what you want to do. If you’re trying to be competitive on the World Series level in ranked seasons, then yeah, but that doesn’t make the game unplayable. There are many modes and different ways to play. Even w/a day or 2 off in between, getting back into the swing of things on All Star difficulty isn’t too bad, so Battle Royale is still super playable. There’s the v CPU modes that are a ton of fun, including March to October. If you have a group of friends sharing the same time crunch for playing, y’all could start a custom league and use your Diamond Dynasty tms there. etc.. So no, it’s not unplayable if you can only play a few times a week. 1000s of players are in that situation and love playing

justin’s burner: So Mason has Cedric Mullins as huge W, who’s been your successful breakout candidate

Paul Sporer: Probably Jared Walsh

Kate: Think Kirk ends up with the lion’s share of the PT behind the plate for the Jays once he’s back?  Or is it more of a time share?

Paul Sporer: I think he can take a bigger share if he’s hitting like he was pre-injury

Catching Smoke: Thanks for answering! Really thought you’d go with Jake Rogers because of Tigerness and mustache. But it’s true he’s not raking.

Paul Sporer: The mustache is fantastic, but he’s rough at the dish

Bauers: Jake Bauers is hitting somewhat better in SEA. I remember him being a target of yours way back when. Any interest? OBP league too.

Paul Sporer: Yeah, I can see a bench spot for him in OBP leagues. One of the reasons I liked him was his potential to run as a 1B so it’ll be interesting to see if SEA lets him flex his (relative) wheels

Prospector: Corner infielder rest of season: Matt Chapman vs. Joey Votto (OBP league).

Paul Sporer: I gotta go Votto, which really surprises me. But he looks like the better power asset with a muuuch better K%

Dan: Jonathan India has two hits with EVs over 110mph just this week. Think he’s going to start showing some more pop as the season goes on, especially in that ballpark?

Paul Sporer: Yeah there’s a grade/grade and a half of power he can tap into and become a solid-average HR hitter. There’s 20-20 upside

Horace Clarke: Unsuccessful finding a trade partner. Must cut one: Lourdes Gurriel, Eddie Rosario, Yaz, Schwarber

Paul Sporer: Gotta be Rosario for me

James: do you foresee any chance we can get meaningful ABs out of Adley Ruthschmann this year? Thinking he could be a sneaky stash for production at C

Paul Sporer: Not really. I generally avoid rookie Cs in general because they take time and while he’s not just some run of the mill C prospect, I’m still not stashing a 3rd C for the summer

Joe: Better ROS in 12 team hah categories: Gomber or Luis Garcia?

Paul Sporer: I’m going Garcia. Yes, his IP will be managed in the summer, but Gomber’s essentially will be, too, since ppl really shouldn’t be using him in Coors very often

Jake: Patrick Sandoval or Cease ROS?

Derek: What are your thoughts on Patrick Sandoval?  He’s young, is there something there?

Paul Sporer: I like Sandoval a good bit. Nick Pollack put me on him a couple years back and this has been an interesting turn. He’s become a changeup-first guy and it’s paying off handsomely. He’s only allowed 2 HR in the five starts and he looks like he can consistently go 5-6 innings and be in line for wins (well, if the Angels pen can hold ’em). Cease is pretty good, too, and I have the two close in rankings, but Cease is higher

Derek: 14 team keeper league, keep 25 of 40, would you trade Yelich to get Winker?

Paul Sporer: Probably not. I’m still in on Yelich. I buy Winker as a top flight hitter but I’ll trade the AVG for Yelly’s SBs
