Max: As a Red Sox fan it hurt my feelings a little bit, but I dealt Xander for Aaron Nola in a SABR points league just before that HOU start. Right move ROS?

Paul Sporer: Yeah I can definitely dig that. It’s a really fair deal long-term, too

Paul Sporer: You’re welcome! Gimme side B on that one

Hiroki : Thoughts on Whit Merrifield?

Paul Sporer: I buy what he’s doing. Two-hit Whit stays lit. I think the spd and AVG are most legit

Tommy: TB Rays season run differential, innings 1-5: +86; innings 6-9: -75. No question, just sadness.

Paul Sporer: Wonder what the Tigers breakdown looks like over the entirety of their 2006-17 window. They weren’t competitors EVERY SINGLE year during that, but bullpen was an issue throughout

Tony: What do you think about guys like Stroman & Fulmer going forward? Seem to have good stuff, but relying on control/contact-management instead of strikeouts. Can they be 200 IP, 3.50 ERA guys like this?

Paul Sporer: Absolutely. Not every successful start has a K-per-inning. I also think Fulmer has K-per-inning stuff, but he focuses more on efficiency. We’ve also seen Stroman’s strikeouts spike at times suggesting some upside for him, too. So I don’t rule out either adding to their K rate, but even if not, they’re both very good

Tony: Best/worst case for Sonny Gray fantasy owners? Basically anywhere aside from Coors gets him away from Oakland’s defense!

Paul Sporer: He gets away from OAK defense, but also loses OAK foul ground. Dodgers would probably be best case.

Braník Best: My long time ottoneu 5×5 league has become lop sided bc of inactive owners. The commissioner wants a one-time “soft reset” with every team only allowed 10-15 keepers and it to be approved by a majority of owners. For something that severe, there needs to be more than 50% approval, right? Plus Ottoneu has a built in system to penalize teams (arbitration).

Paul Sporer: I’d say you need 100% with stuff like this or at least consensus among the active group and then replace the inactives

Tony: What do you expect from Donaldson RoS? More Ks than usual, maybe a bit less power? 260/360/500?

Paul Sporer: I think that’s a safe bet to keep expectations in check. And elite JD isn’t out of the question

CamdenWarehouse: The EW facebook group dug up the Fangraphs Franchise Player Draft.  Many chuckles were had at your (and others’) trashing of Carson picking Trout at #3.

Paul Sporer: I think bump in the road. I’m not really concerned about getting waxed by LAD and HOU, that’s basically expected from anyone but a true ace

Brendan: I got Alex Wood in a 6×6 QS and OBP league and I feel like I need another outfielder. Current outfield is Harper Choo and Billy Hamilton with merrifield on my bench. What one for one OFer would you target? Thank you!

Paul Sporer: A really good one, Wood has been unreal. But it depends what your market will bear, so you have to go shopping

Hardy Boys: Time to drop Thames and Owings in a 10-team H2H?

Paul Sporer: Ya I’m OK with either… I was so hyped on Thames 🙁

Dub: drafted J Ramirez, Turner & Rendon, which do I move in a redraft league for pitching? ie who has the worst 2nd half?

Paul Sporer: No idea who has the worst 2H, all three have been so excellent this year. Trade whichever returns the most. I’d go for Rendon first

Paul Sporer: ROS it’s probably Weaver or the Glasnow with his new mechanics (though we don’t know when he’s coming up). Honeywell unlikely to start at any pt this year

Dub: should I trade Zach Britton if I can get a big return?

Paul Sporer: Yes, I mean you should trade anyone you can afford to lose if you’re getting a return that helps you

ThickTanPretzel: Hey man! Price’s elbow has me bent. Noticed Eickhoff has a creampuff schedule from here. Can I get your permission to hold him in a 12-team QS over guys like Kennedy, Corbin, Maeda (who never makes it thru 6…)?

Paul Sporer: I feel like Corbin has been rolling, but I don’t think he’s so much better than you can’t take the guy you want in Eick, so proceed as you wish

Chris: Have you had a chance to look deeper into Luis Castillo? Hoping that I grabbed a nice lottery ticket in my dynasty.

Paul Sporer: I have, I’m a huge fan of the raw stuff. There’s still work to be done for sure so expect bumps, but he’s had a DISASTROUS schedule and come out on the other side of it

Fellow Energy Drink Connoisseur: Keeper league where only 4 teams are ‘going for it’ this year. My pitching is in a world of hurt but I’m killing it on offense. Need to catch ‘lightning in bottle’ on cheaper arms people aren’t attached to as keepers.

Bart: What are your thoughts on Ryon Healy?  Should I keep him over Beltre in a dynasty league?

Paul Sporer: Ehh, I’m not sure he has a ton of upside, but I think he can live at this level for a few years

TP: Whats cookin Paul. Starting to panic about Donaldson over here. Production & profile both really disappointing. Do I try to sell, hoping I can still cash in on name value/high draft position? Or are you staying the course & waiting for him to turn it around? Afraid if I wait too long his value keeps plummeting.

Paul Sporer: It really depends on returns, so go ahead and shop him and see what’s out there for you, but you might have to ride it out. Sometimes the star-level dud seasons are unsellable and you just have to absorb it

Tony: What do you expect from Brad Peacock the rest of the way? Is he going to get any starts? lots of 3 IP relief appearances with 5 K and 2 BB?

Paul Sporer: I think it could be more of the latter, but we really have to see if they get an SP at the deadline. So I don’t have a firm handle on it right now

Matt: Dynasty league. Trying to buy rentals. Other team starting with T Turner. He’s willing to give up Conforto. Turner and Conforto on same contract. Are those two close to a wash?

Paul Sporer: Think Turner has a nice edge in fantasy value bc of the speed, but I love Conforto’s bat. If it’s rentals, why does contract matter,though?

rpo: How would you rank these keepers for next year (assuming same price): Bregman, Benintendi, G. Sanchez, Ozuna, C. Frazier?

Paul Sporer: Ozuna, Sanchez, Beni, Breg, Frazier

Paul Sporer: Paxton/Ozuna best; Cotton worst

Paul Sporer: Upton/Marte/Turner are gonna bring the biggest returns. Try the first 2 first then go to Turner if you don’t like the offers for those guys

Matt: Thoughts on Darvish ROS?

Paul Sporer: A couple ugly ones recently, but I still believe he’s one of the game’s best arms. I wonder if the trade speculation impacts him or not. It’s different player to player. Some have it weigh on em, others couldn’t care less. Miami jumped him and just kept going

seth: Chances Gallo pulls a Judge and ups the contact rate to become a superhero?

Paul Sporer: 2%

Yondong: I’m in a full dynasty league. Machado + Pomeranz for Lindor + Sonny. Who do you take?

Paul Sporer: That’s really fair. I’d go Lindor personally, but I see zero gap between the two sides, tbh

James: Is devers worth picking up even with the Red Sox trading for Nunez? Still available in my league and could use a third baseman

Paul Sporer: Ya, they knew they were going for Nunez when they brought up Devers. Devers sits vL and Nunez bounces around giving guys breaks when they’re facing righties and Devers is at 3B

Detroit’s Most Wanted: everyone saying Verlander isn’t having a good season, but he has only given up more than 3 ER on 5 occasions this year and once since May 30th. He would be a huge asset to any contender. He would thrive in October.

Paul Sporer: You’re talking more real life baseball and I agree. A 4.50 ERA just looks bad, but so many teams would take 6 IP/3 ER every fifth day for sure. He hasn’t returned his draft day value for fantasy, though, with that ERA, plus a 1.44 WHIP and less than a K-per-IP

Paul Sporer: Love JV, but no way to say he hasn’t been bad for fantasy after being drafted as an ace

Jonas : Would you trade 3 more years of Margot + the rest of this year of Yu for the rest of this year of Khris Davis and Manaea (plus two extra years after).

Paul Sporer: If the power puts you over the top

Paul Sporer: He’s been battling blisters for a while now. He usually pitches through it, but it’s no doubt impacting his control

Tony: Danny Salazar sure looked good… he’s definitely giving up 5+ runs without getting out of the 3rd inning in his next start, isn’t he?

Paul Sporer: LOOOOL, probably. I certainly hope not, but ya we don’t wanna get TOOO nuts about the one start

Paul Sporer: Perfect deal, works for both sides

50 shades of Sonny Gray: What is Moncada’s fantasy ceiling?

Paul Sporer: First round stud with power and speed. I think it’s more .275, but if we’re talking perfect world ceiling, I could see a .290-.300 where he just mashes his way beyond a relatively high K rate with 30+ HR/SB

Paul’s Friend: How much do you trust Trevor Cahill moving forward?

Paul Sporer: I’ve been starting him regularly in the leagues I have him. 10 tm streamer (but an on-team streamer, meaning he goes between reserve & lineup) and then in the lineup everywhere else

Beavis: What’s a reasonable expectation for Tanaka ROS? I’ve been using him as a spot-starter lately, but he keeps crossing me up.

Paul Sporer: That’s the tough part, you can’t really time his blowups bc they aren’t really team or venue related. I think you just gotta ride it out. low-4.00s with solid Ks and a good chance to win w/that pen and lineup

CraftyPils: thoughts on getting teams that are out of it to keep playing in a redraft league

Paul Sporer: that’s always a challenge. punishment for last? 1st pick for first spot out of the money?

Paul Sporer: just make sure ppl keep active lineups

Paul Sporer: shouldn’t be that hard to have everyone making sure they dont’ have DL’d guys in and end up falling back in standings bc of ignored lineups

Chris: In need of power. HanRam and Schwarber are available. Addison Russell, Ian Happ, Nick Williams, Ian Kinsler, and Jonathan Villar

Paul Sporer: The first 2 are your best bets. Schwarber might hit .220, but it’ll be with power

Bart: Hold Inciarte or pick up Bautista or Renfroe off waivers in a 12 tm h2h keeper lg.

Paul Sporer: Really depends on need since the profile between Inciarte and the pick ups are so diff

Paul Sporer: Bc it really depends what your league will give. It’s all about your individual market. Especially at this point in the season since draft day values don’t matter. Find someone who needs speed and you should be able to get a strong arm for Marte. Find someone more in need of power and then Upton/CSantana become appealing

Paul Sporer: Find your trade partners first then check their pitching and see who helps you most

Taylor: As commish in a competitive 14 team league I proposed switching to QS instead of wins and met some backlash. What are your thoughts between the two categories? One big argument was QS only can be won my staters, whereas all pitchers can contribute in wins.

Paul Sporer: A fair contention, but maybe add Holds to keep RP value up and even add to it for non-closers?

Paul Sporer: Dang that’s a tough one. Why not just Correa for one of them? Seems unnecessary to ship Rendon, too. I’m ok moving Correa to help your playoff chances, but not this deal w/Rendon in it

ChicagoCardinal: Ugh – Traded for Price on Tuesday. Have he and Kershaw on DL now. With Kluber and Ray in my rotation still, is my best bet to go reliever heavy for a few weeks?

Paul Sporer: Should be starting vR for the foreseeable future

kfalsjkdw: Are you shopping Faria? His peripherals seem to be creeping up a bit

Paul Sporer: Really like the stuff and think he’s a solid arm, but ya I’m shopping him after 9 starts at this peak hoping to find someone who buys this level or something close to it. I think he’s more 3.80-4.20 rest of way so you’ll be fine even if you can’t sell, but try to parlay the big start
