Ottoneu Power Rankings: July 2017
It’s once again time for a macro level view of the ottoneu landscape, and as of the end of July the teams involved in championship races are well known. Let’s take a look at the top performing teams and leagues:
You can find prior power rankings here: June, May, April, 2016 Final
The first ranking I’m going to present shows the top individual teams in all FanGraphs points leagues based on their Pace, which is a metric I calculate by taking each team’s current Pts/G and Pts/IP and multiplying them by their projected games (max of 1,944) and innings (max of 1,500). Also, please note that any teams/leagues from leagues with less than twelve teams are excluded from these rankings.

Note- there are 1,596 FGpts teams across 133 leagues.
Offensive scoring continues to outpace 2016 levels (driven in large part by the HR boom), as FGPts teams average 5.36 Pts/G (up from 5.23 Pts/G in July ’16), but just 4.71 Pts/IP (down from 4.92 Pts/IP in July ’16). Overall scoring is still down, as three teams project over 20,500 points and only seven are pacing over 20,000 points.
There is a new #1 team in the rankings, as RANDAL HANDSHAKE rises from #4, and the former #1 Gimme All Yasmani drops one spot to #9. Rochester Grangers had the biggest rise, going from unranked last month to #4. Mookie Betts and the TINSTAAP GANG had the biggest fall, going from #9 last month (and #1 two months ago) to unranked. All told nine teams in the top ten are repeats from last month, as well as fifteen teams in the top twenty.

Up next, the SABR league power rankings. I’m only going to show the top five teams/leagues as there are much fewer SABR leagues than FanGraphs points leagues.

If be curious to see where my 5×5 league (101) ranks in the power rankings. I imagine bottom third.
101 is actually closer to bottom fifth
Not surprised. Thanks.
Hey Vibber – Can you explain how you came up with the “Rnk+” to rank the leagues? Also, #430 is coming for that top spot.
Pasting in from my post on April ’17 rankings:
All league power rankings for all four ottoneu scoring types will follow the same process, and that is a simple average of the individual team rankings for all teams in the league, and then scaling that average against the average league (think of wRC+). I believe that this method better represents what I have been trying to accomplish with the league rankings (identifying which leagues have the greatest collection of team quality), is more consistently applied month to month, and also allows us to compare league quality across different scoring types directly.
So basically, if all twelve teams in your league are perfectly average, the league Rnk+ would be 100.
thanks
Have you considered the fact that the lower half or lower third teams may be deliberately punting for future assets by August? I’d be interested in league rankings based off top 7 or 8 teams in a league. Also, do you happen a google doc or something of this? Would love to see where my league ranks without making a trend of asking in the comments where every individual league stands
I have considered that, yes, and the way I used to calculate the league rankings did weigh the top half of the league more heavily. I changed to this method because having teams at the bottom of a league punting aggressively (or more aggressively than the typical 11th/12th place team) almost always benefits the top few teams. I wanted the rankings to reflect how competitive a league was top to bottom, and this current method does that in a way that’s easier for me to calculate and less arbitrary (I used to weigh three or four different components, and it was always just guesswork).
As for a google doc of the rankings, I have posted the final year end power rankings documents in the past. You can find 2016 FGPts detail here: http://community.ottoneu.com/t/2016-fgpts-power-rankings/788
Great articale as always! What ranking is “League Name Goes Here” We were ranked 17th last month and I feel we just got better. Especially Smelly Pirate Hookers!!
League Name Goes Here was 22nd
Everyone gave up in 513 and traded their rentals to RANDAL HANDSHAKE, who is still buying in order to win all of ottoneau. So thank you for this #content, which is destroying his 2018 season.
I wonder how far out of the top 20 I landed. I’m the current first place team in the 3rd ranked league. (Walking Disaster #652)
And that’s what happens when you go two months without trout and Freeman and your pitchers go on the DL at the same time— mookie
I’m looking at the dashboard and I’m projected at 20,021 (Royal Flush with Lefties in #244), but I’m not on this list… not sure if I’m missing something or was overlooked.
Would be interested to see FGPts prize league rankings if something you’d consider incorporating into these reports. Another idea would be to include an additional column in the rankings indicating whether a league is a prize league or not (e.g. Y/N).
