MASH Report (9/10/15)

Ryan Zimmerman will miss significant time with an oblique injury.

Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman remains out of the lineup because of a left oblique injury. Although he is listed as day to day, two sources expected Zimmerman to miss a significant amount of time because of the injury.

Manuel Banuelos will be shut down for the rest of the season with elbow discomfort.

Banuelos exited Sunday’s disappointing outing against the Nationals with some elbow discomfort. The Braves held out hope that the pain would subside as this week progressed. But before Wednesday’s series finale against the Phillies, Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez revealed the rookie left-hander would be re-evaluated by Dr. James Andrews next week.

“We don’t think there is anything significant there, he’s just in pain right now,” Braves assistant general manager John Coppolella said. “He wasn’t feeling great. We had hoped he might come in and feel really good today. That didn’t happen.”

C.J. Wilson feels better after elbow surgery, but may not come out throwing 100% next season.

Wilson said there is not one particular pitch in his vast repertoire that puts more stress on his elbow, but he will have to make one concession when he returns.

“I need to avoid trying to throw the ball with max effort repeatedly, over and over and over again,” he said. His elbow problems are “a condition of pitching, not necessarily of my mechanics. I don’t have anything too flagrant that I do. I just need to stay on top of my mechanics overall.”

I am not sure how to take this news, but it will be interesting to see where his talent level ends up.

A.J. Burnett will come off the DL to start tonight.

Jurickson Profar (link) and Marco Gonzales (link) will not join their major league teams in Septemeber after both dealt with injuries this year. Profar may end up playing in the Arizona Fall League.

• Here is a nice update on the Dylan Bundy mess.

Bundy, who was recently cleared to begin a throwing program, will be built back up to pitch in this fall’s instructional league, if everything goes according to plan. Beyond that, there’s a lot of secrecy around Bundy’s future, with Showalter saying Wednesday that there’s a “Plan A and a Plan B” for the young right-hander.

Obviously, Plan B is if there’s any kind of health setback, which — at this point — would really put Bundy and the O’s in a bind. I can’t handicap whether he makes the club next year, as he hasn’t pitched in a Minor League game since May and I haven’t personally seen him throw since Spring Training. I can say that he will be given every opportunity in the organization, though. He’s out of Minor League options, meaning if Bundy does not make the Opening Day roster, the O’s risk losing him on waivers.

Kristopher Negron will miss the rest of the 2015 season with a torn labrum and fractured scapula in his shoulder.

Velocity Readings

Carlos Carrasco’s average fastball velocity was at a season high.

CC Sabathia’s velocity was near his season average.

Stephen Strasburg’s velocity was fine after his layoff.
