MASH Report (7/7/14)

• On July 4th, Gerrit Cole was removed from his start with a sore lat. Here are his velocity readings from the game.

For his next start, look for a fastball velocity near 97 mph vs 93 mph which is where he ended the game at.

Jon Niese admits to dealing with a fatigued shoulder for over a month.

“It’s been that way for probably a month and a half now,” said Niese, who expects to start against the Padres in the Mets’ first series after the All-Star break. “It finally caught up with me, and it’s something I could pitch through. It’s something I would have to battle through the rest of the year. I think this is just as good a time as any to take a break and let it get back strong.”

For my pitcher injury finder, PAIN, I need samples like this case to see how my process holds up. Since it looks for velocity and Zone% declines, I need to see how Niese performed in both.

His velocity was down (-1.5mph).

His Zone% was stable.

He had one sign of a injury (velocity loss), but he was still able to throw strikes with the pain. I usually put more credit in Zone%, but in this case it didn’t work. Thinking…….

Joey Votto will officially end up on the DL in a day or two with a strained quad.

Edwin Encarnacion will be on the DL also with a strained quad also.

Kolten Wong is back from the DL, but he admits his shoulder is still bothering him.

Kolten Wong battled to play through a shoulder injury for more than a week in June, and it appears that battle could linger the remainder of the season.
…..
“I wouldn’t say [my shoulder is] 100 percent, but it’s pretty close,” the Cardinals second baseman said. “I’m able to finish my swing now without any pain and kind of get back to where I was before I got hurt.”

Jeremy Hellickson will start for the Rays on Tuesday.

Jaime Garcia will under go season-ending surgery on his shoulder.

CC Sabathia’s will likely not pitch again in 2014.

• The #1 ranked (or pretty darn close) prospect, Byron Buxton, played in him first 2014 game in High-A Fort Myers on Sunday.

Fastball Velocity Watch for Pitchers Returning From the DL

Brad Hand’s average fastball velocity was down, but he did move to being a starter.

Anthony Bass’s velocity was fine.

Ian Krol’s was down to pre-DL levels. Basically, not good.

Fernando Salas’s was up after a pre-DL slide.

Brett Cecil’s velo looked fine.

Eric O’Flaherty’s speed is fine after finally returning from TJS.

Players on the DL

I was keeping track of these values because in August, I new I had some values from last season. I was searching around for some other files and found most of the rest of the 2013 values. I added them in and it looks like DL stints are down for this season compared to last season.

Players on the DL

(*) 15 Day Disabled List

Sure would be nice if they would go ahead and get Encarnacion and Votto on the DL already.
