MASH Report (6/5/14)

Jedd Gyorko’s struggles at the plate (.162/.213/.270) could be related to plantar fasciitis in his left foot. He says his foot only started bothering him on May 30th, which I don’t buy one bit.

• I feel sorry for any player on the Mets.  A week ago I wrote:

Mets are up to the same incompetence when it comes to injuries. Dillon Gee has a lat strain. For pitchers (see Kyle Zimmer and James Paxton), it takes about two months to return. The Mets expected Gee to throw after a couple weeks and had no success. Don’t be surprised if Gee is not back until mid-July.

Now Gee’s diagnosis is for a late June to All-start break return.

That means the end of June would be the earliest Gee could return, with a post-All-Star break return also realistic.

“There’s a process to recuperating from an injury,” Collins said of Gee, who was placed on the DL retroactive to May 11, with the original intention of activating him on May 26. “This is obviously more than we thought it was going to be. When his body tells him he’s OK, he’ll resume. When that is, I don’t know if anybody knows for sure.”

It is pretty sad the Mets thought it would only be a couple of weeks, but the rest of the industry knows better.

• A sneaky grab for an owner may be to pick up the Orioles Dylan Bundy. He is now slated to begin pitching in the minors. He is at least a month off from going the MLB team, but the chances of him being available on the waiver wire will become less and less as he gets closer to returning.

Wil Myers will be in a cast for 5-6 weeks. After he gets the cast off, he will need to rehab it and get up to game speed. If he is playing in the majors before August, I will be surprised.

• No one seems to have a clue what is wrong with Carlos Gonzalez’s finger

The injury originally was thought to be a broken blood vessel. During an examination on Thursday by Cleveland hand specialist Thomas Graham, the belief was there may be some sort of “foreign bodies” — perhaps a fingernail or a splinter — in the finger, with a soft tissue mass around it. However, no identifiable object showed up on an MRI exam or ultrasound.

Dugger said if there isn’t an object identified or if the object is miniscule, surgery can do damage and unnecessarily add to a player’s recovery time.

“For now, I have to just wait and see how it reacts,” Gonzalez said. “I’m in that position. I don’t know what we have to do. The best thing now is rest and see if it gets better in 15 days, and start swinging the bat and not worry about one finger.”

What a mess. Owners should not expect much production from him this season and start looking for other solutions. If he does come back, great. But if not, a secondary plan needs to be in place.

• Looks like Danny Salazar has been hurt and that may have been the reason he has pitched horribly this season.

On Wednesday, the Columbus Clippers announced that the right-hander has been placed on the disabled list with what was announced as a right triceps strain. The team also recognized that Salazar has been dealing with minor elbow inflammation, but it does not consider the injury to be a serious one.

Inflamed elbow for who knows how long. Then a tricep strain. Just let him rest and have him come back healthy.

Brandon Webb, the last pitcher I ever took in the first round of a draft, talked about never coming back from his shoulder surgery.

• Kyle Boddy at DriveLineBaseball.com came at with his own position on arm injuries after the American Sports Medicine Institute came out with their own statement.

Andrew Cashner is expected to pitch Saturday.

Matt Cain starts on Friday.

Carlos Santana is expected back Friday.

Jose Iglesias will not play for the Tigers in 2014.

• It looks Jurickson Profar will also not play in 2014.

• The Phillies signed Jason Marquis who should be ready to start pitching in July after recovering from Tommy John surgery.

I like the total number of players on the DL graph but think it would carry more weight if we could compare it to something. Something simple like another plot showing number of players on the DL for 2013 would add context.
