MASH Report (6/27/16)

• Not a lot of movement to and from the DL over the weekend, but there was a bunch of injury updates to the spreadsheet.

Stephen Strasburg is out with a sore back. Let him tell you how he did it.

Strasburg was scheduled to start on Sunday’s eventual 3-2 win over the Brewers, but his back problems flared up during warmups Saturday. He revealed that he popped two ribs out of place during a weight-training mishap last week, causing the back problems. Strasburg acknowledged it was hard to breathe with the ribs out of place. A chiropractor later fixed the issue.

“I was out there running. I don’t know why. It flared back up. I tried to get it adjusted. It was the first rib that caused the tightness,” Strasburg said. “I had it adjusted today [by a chiropractor]. I have to keep my fingers crossed.

WHAT !?!?!? Just a couple of ribs … they just popped out. It seems like he won’t miss much time though.

Andrew Bailey is not happy about his move to the DL since he figured he would be healthy soon.

“They said they didn’t have a couple days,” Bailey said. “They couldn’t wait around that long, I guess, so they wanted to make a move, which stinks. I think I would have been all right for tomorrow, but that’s my opinion. It’s not a move personally I like, but it’s best for the team I guess. That’s most important.”

Socrates Brito is out with a broken toe. The average return times for a broken toe is four to six weeks.

• The Mariners Adrian Sampson made a couple of MLB starts and is on the DL for the rest of the season because of elbow surgery. Sampson was a prospect sleeper for me who is in the Zach Davies mold of Low strikeouts and walks and high groundball rate.

Fastball velocity reading for pitchers returning from the DL

Michael Lorenzen’s average fastball velocity is fine compared to when he was previously in the bullpen.

Ryan Webb’s velocity is down 3 mph compared to before the DL stint.

Even if he weren’t trying to come back from TJS, I don’t see any reason Zack Wheeler should be tossing logs. That just seems irresponsible.
