MASH Report (6/2/16)

Felix Hernandez will likely miss a few starts on the DL with a strained calf.

“Right now I’m hopeful that it’s only a couple starts and we can get him back as soon as pos-sible,” Servais said before Wednesday’s game. “I’m trying to keep the glass half full and stay positive. Hopefully he’ll have a little extra left in his tank at the end of the year because he’s getting a little breather now. But it has nothing to do with his arm. It’s all related to the calf.”

Hernandez was examined in Seattle on Wednesday by Mariners physician Ed Khalfayan. If the injury proves to be very minor, Hernandez potentially will miss only two starts, since the DL move is retroactive to Saturday — the day after his most recent start. He will be eligible to return on June 12, which is the final day of the Mariners’ next homestand.

Miguel Sano strained his hamstring and will be out a bit.

Sano hustled down the line and beat it out, scoring Eduardo Nunezfrom third to give the Twins a 2-1 lead in their eventual 7-4 loss to the A’s. But Sano said he felt the hamstring strain one step before reaching the bag, and it’s the first time he’s dealt with the injury.

“I was trying to hustle for the team,” Sano said. “It’s tough because I want to help the team and I can’t do that when I’m out. It’s frustrating. I was hitting the ball well.”

Alex Wood, who had a good May (4th highest K-BB% among qualified starters at 29%), is headed to the DL with elbow swelling.

Manager Dave Roberts said the decision to put him on the DL was made because of linger-ing soreness. Wood will head back to Los Angeles for an MRI.

“We gave Alex a few extra days his last turn, and after [Monday’s start] he just had some dis-comfort,” Roberts said. “[Tuesday] morning he woke up with more of the same, so it just made sense to get him back to L.A. and get more tests done. … It’s just more precautionary, but we’re hoping for the best.”

Dustin Ackley will have surgery on his shoulder and miss the rest of the season and maybe the early part of next season.

Ackley injured his shoulder diving back into first base in the sixth inning of the Yankees’ 2-1 victory over the Rays on Sunday at Tropicana Field. An MRI taken in Tampa, Fla., revealed the tear, and the 28-year-old saw team physician Christopher Ahmad on Tuesday in New York.

Girardi said that Ackley should be ready to play at some point early in 2017. It remains to be seen if that will be with the Yankees; Ackley is earning $3.2 million this year and is heading into his final year of arbitration, making him a non-tender candidate.

“Hopefully if he’s not ready [next spring], he’s close to ready,” Girardi said.

Hunter Pence went on the DL today with a strained hamstring which has bothered him for a few days.

Carlos Carrasco is expected to come off the DL today and start against the Royals.

• Also, David Peralta is supposed to be activated tomorrow.

Michael Blazek is on the DL with a sore right elbow.

Cliff Pennington is headed back to the DL with another strained hamstring.

• Pennington isn’t the only player headed back to the DL. Brad Boxberger will be out another 4 to 8 weeks with a strained oblique.

Brett Eibner sprained his ankle and is on the DL after being promoted to replace Alex Gordon when he went on the DL.

Caleb Cotham is on the DL with an inflamed shoulder.

• Whoever Warwick Saupold is for the Tigers, he was placed on the DL with a strained groin.

Fastball velocity reading for pitchers returning from the DL

Josh Collmenter’s average fastball velocity is fine.

Mike Dunn has lost a good 2 mph off his fastball.

Jon Moscot has also seen a 2 mph drop after returning.

Eduardo Rodriguez is experiencing the same drop.

Huston Street is only experiencing a 1 mph drop.
