MASH Report (5/18/15)
• Doug Fister is out with forearm tightness. He is to undergo some tests today and may eventually need Tommy John surgery.
• Chase Whitley and his strained elbow are also under consideration for Tommy John surgery.

• Soon we will find out if Devin Mesoraco will start catching or have hip surgery.
“That’s kind of the time,” Mesoraco said on Thursday. “We have to see if it’s going to work out. It’s been over a month [since catching]. If it’s going to work, it’s going to happen at that time. If it isn’t, we’ll know at that time. At this point, it’s time to figure it out.”
…
Mesoraco and the club have also put off what would likely be season-ending surgery while they explore every avenue of treatment and therapy. He reported feeling much better in recent days.
…
Surgery is still a possibility, and the catching test could be the determining factor.
It may be time to sell him for pennies on the dollar while you can still get the pennies.
• The Rockies are trying to decide if Corey Dickerson will require a DL stint from a plantar faciitis flare-up. He has been dealing with the issue since spring training.
• Jean Segura will be out for at least the required 15 days with a broken pinky finger. He is not happy with the decision, but it will probably be best to let the finger heal.
• Justin Morneau went on the 7-day DL for a concussion. His previous concussion is the issue which may casue complications and may put a damper on his return time.
• Justin Masterson on the DL because he sucks has shoulder inflammation.
• Jordan Schafer was a sleeper pick for me to start the season. He seemed to a have a secure lineup spot at the top of the Twins order where he could get a decent number of runs and stolen bases. In late April, he hurt his knee and hasn’t been the same since then.
Schafer, meanwhile, has been dealing with the knee sprain since April 29, when he fell rounding first base after reaching on a bunt single. He played in eight games after suffering the injury, hitting .286/.348/.333, but the speedster was caught stealing in his only stolen base attempt.
“Schafer’s right knee issue has lingered,” Twins manager Paul Molitor said. “We thought initially he could play through it and see improvement, but we haven’t seen that. So he’s going to the DL to try to get that thing to 100 percent.”
I like him as a buy low once he comes off the DL.
• Ike Davis is now on the DL with a strained quadricep.
• Chad Billingsley is back on the DL (shoulder) after making three starts for the Phillies. I am a little surprised he was able to throw as much as he did without getting hurt.
• Ross Detwiler is on the DL. The Rangers pitching staff is a complete mess right now.
• Pedro Baez will miss some time with a strained pectoral muscle.
Velocity Readings
• Kenley Jansen’s average fastball velocity is inline with his 2014 values

• Jake McGee’s velocity was also fine

• Archie Bradley’s is fine also.

• Chris Capuano’s velocity was near his recent season lows.

• Henderson Alvarez is still down 2 mph from last season.

• Kyuji Fujikawa’s velocity is also down 2 mph.

That Masterson blurb made me lol in my office
I never understood A. giving him 9.5 mil and B. media pundits saying it was a good signing. He’s a bum, washed up.
You know why.
He is one of the few cases where I don’t think there is a real injury. He was a borderline decent pitcher when “good” and fell of quickly.
Sorry to ask another Rendon question. But once a guy is at “extended spring training,” do we know how long it usually takes to return? Any rules about this?
I always hit vote up instead of reply ><
For reference, Josh Reddick sprained his Oblique in the first week of March and played his first game back April 12. He was out for about 5 weeks.
Rendon seems to be slightly ahead of that time table, as he's in extended Spring only 2 weeks after the injury, but I'd be surprised if he was back in the MLB before June 1.
To answer your question simply, you can usually expect a guy to take about 10 days from "resuming baseball activities" to play a rehab game, and two weeks to be back with the parent club.
Thanks, hebrew!
Teams use extended spring training (Wieters is another who spent time there) to really help the player. Everything is controlled, the player doesn’t have to ride the bus. Until short season ball starts, quite a few players will go there.
I’m concerned about Dickerson. I am trying to buy low on him and Mookie Betts. One guy wants Garrett Richards, the other guy wants Arietta. Is it worth buying low on Dickerson?
If a keeper, jump on either trade.
Just for 2015, I think the trades are fairly even. The trade could be more based on your needs.
Thanks.
Thoughts on Ian Kennedy and his velocity?
He seems to be back to his 2012 to 2013 levels with velocity and strikeouts. Also the home runs are an issue. Depending on league depth, I could see stashing him or cutting bait, but there is no reason to start him now.
I should say “his decreasing velocity”? I think it sort of came back after his hamstring injury, but it’s dropping again and the results have been bad.
I’m curious about this as well. Is it simply a case of Kennedy not having a rehab start and building his arm strength back up or do you think he is still nursing some sort of lower body injury that may be causing his declined velocity. He has been hit hard in two of his starts, granted against good LA and Nats offenses, but I thought he would be a nice pick in fantasy leagues considering the home park and improved San Diego offense giving him some better shots at more Wins.
There’s some talk of Tanaka doing one rehab start later this week and then coming back right after that. if so, a big if, mid-June would not seem to be his earliest possible return. More like late May. Which was the original iffy timetable of out about a month.
I probably could go with early June, but I have no faith in him being a productive pitcher for more than a start or two.
