MASH Report (4/21/16)

• I added quite a few updates on players in the spreadsheet like Tyson Ross’s setback. It seemed like the MLB.com beat reporters were each required to write and injury related article over the past couple of days.

Joe Kelly is on the DL with a shoulder impingement.

“That was all I got right there,” said Kelly. “It was as hard as I could throw the ball at that time. It didn’t feel that great, obviously. Hovering around that 89-90 [mph] range was what I had, and I tried to push through it and got the last pitch up to 94 luckily for the strikeout, obviously. It didn’t feel very good.”

Kelly didn’t feel 100 percent between starts.

“I felt a little off, but honestly, [I] didn’t think much about it. It was typical soreness leading up to the start,” said Kelly. “Like I said, I thought I was going to be good to go and went out there and tried to step on the gas and nothing came out.

I was not surprised with the injury after seeing him as the pitcher with the 13th highest rated PAIN score on Monday. His score was the highest of those with at least 150 pitches. It was easy to notice the huge drop in velocity.

I am though surprised the Red Sox let him throw as long as he did in the game.

• One quote I noticed in a Ben Revere write up came from Dusty Baker

Whether Revere will require a Minor League rehab assignment before returning to the Nationals is unclear. Manager Dusty Baker said on Wednesday that it’s possible Revere can avoid it considering his body type, but it was too early in the process to tell.

OK, Ben is a smaller guy, why does his body type matter? Actually, I would be worried by non-athletic big boned guys having a reoccurring injury. Here is Dusty’s explanation.

“The thing about an injury is that you have to get past thinking about it, because you can’t play this game and really think in the process,” Baker said. “You have to process it and think about it before you do it. And after that, while you’re doing it, you got to be natural. So it’s go-ing to be little while before he feels natural.”

Huh? What does that have to do with his body type? It is maybe something to do with his playing style.

Trevor Plouffe is on the DL with a strained intercostal muscle. No official statement exists on his return times, but I think it will be just the 15 days. He had been playing through the injury, so it isn’t too debilitating.

Gordon Beckham will miss a couple of weeks with a strained hamstring.

Edwin Jackson saved his owners the misery of starting him or having him on their bench by going on the DL with a strained triceps.

Cory Spangenberg is on the DL with a strained hamstring. If you were counting on Spandenberg to win your league, I am sorry. Just sorry.

• In other irrelevant injury news, George Kontos will go on the DL with a flexor strain.

Jonathan Gray is supposed to come off the DL today and face the Dodgers. I would not start him until we have an idea of his current ability.

Fastball velocity reading for pitchers returning from the DL

Blaine Hardy’s average fastball velocity is fine.

Jon Moscot’s was also fine.
