MASH Report (2/23/15)

• I will steal the words of the great philosopher Ned Yost to intro this list of broken down ball players:

“… everything being written at this time of year is just ‘fluff’.

So much ‘Fluff’ right now. I am getting a ton of small updates with how everyone is feeling great and/or making outstanding progress. I am not going to write about each of these “Best Shape in Whenever” reports, but will put them into the injury spreadsheet. I will just try to concentrate on bad news until some games start.

• The Braves Shae Simmons will miss all of the 2015 season because of Tommy John surgery. He was the first player to officially go on the DL in 2015. Chris Withrow and Brandon Beachy has since joined him.

Kenley Jansen will be out 8 to 12 weeks because of foot surgery.

The Dodgers will open the season without closer Kenley Jansen, who underwent surgery on his left foot on Tuesday and will be sidelined an estimated eight to 12 weeks.
…..
Based on the club’s estimate, Jansen could be out until mid-May, missing one-quarter of the season. The untimely injury helps explain why the Dodgers have been rumored to be shopping for relief help in recent days.

With Joel Peralta also hurting (see below), it will be interesting to see how the Dodgers will add a bullpen arm or two.

• The Cardinals are looking at limiting Adam Wainwright’s workload. Wainwright and the team don’t seem to be on the same page on how to limit the innings.

“I just know when I’m feeling healthy and feeling good, I don’t want to be watching the team,” Wainwright said, responding to a question about the potential of skipping periodic starts. “I want to be playing. I want to be competing. I’m getting paid to play every five days as it is, not every day. If I’m skipping my one every five days, good Lord, what am I getting paid for?

The Cardinals aren’t insistent that Wainwright miss a start or two in an effort to reduce his innings, but that scenario has been discussed. They’ve also talked about having Wainwright throw less in spring, hopeful that pitches not used now can be pitches thrown later in the year. All this brainstorming comes on the heels of watching Wainwright shoulder 519 2/3 innings — 276 2/3 in 2013, 243 in 2014, including postseason totals — over the past two years.

“Whatever it ends up being is going to be fine,” Wainwright said. “It’s going to work out. As long as we’re talking about limiting starts now and not in the regular season, that’s fine.”

Right now I expect him to throw until his elbow finally explodes.

Josh Hamilton will likely be out a month longer than orignally reported.

“It could be six to eight weeks, it could be as much as 12 weeks,” Dipoto said. “He had a bone shaved down to create less friction in an arthritic shoulder. Until he gets on site and on the field, it’s tough to determine how long it will take.”

I am not surprised on this development considering Hamilton’s injury filled past.

Jurickson Profar will miss all of the 2015 season after needing shoulder surgery.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels took issue with some sniping directed at injured infielder Jurickson Profar, who is likely to miss his second consecutive season after having shoulder surgery on Monday.

….
Daniels said he understands why Profar preferred to try rehabbing without surgery. Profar was hoping to make it back for the 2015 season and was in good spirits and feeling good throughout his recovery process this winter.

Sean Marshall has not started throwing yet because of shoulder inflammation.

Joel Hanrahan cut short his bullpen session because of soreness.

Sergio Romo is feeling a little shoulder discomfort, but hopes to be feeling better soon. I guess we can wait and see.

Joel Peralta is not throwing yet because of shoulder discomfort. He could end up being the Dodgers closer with Kenley Jansen out to start the season.

Tim Hudson may not be ready for the start of the season.

Are Dylan Bundy’s return dates to the majors? If so, differentiation between returning to play vs. the majors would be helpful.
