MASH Report (12/30/13)

It is that time of year when players state they are in the best shape of their lives. I am going to try not to publish any best shape  information unless news exists on the player’s actual progress.

Matt Kemp (foot and shoulder injuries) had his walking boot removed recently. Currently, he doesn’t look to be 100% by spring training, but ready for the season’s start.

Shane Victorino had thumb surgery which bothered him down last season’s  stretch run. It must not affected him too much because his two best monthly wOBA were in August (.419) and September (.356).

Mark Teixeira is taking swings, but is still feeling tightness in his wrist.

I wish I was a little bit looser; my wrist is going to be tight for a while because of the way the surgery was performed. They had to kind of tighten everything up to make it secure. It’s still a little bit tight, but that’s why I’m doing rehab every day and doing exercises every day….. You won’t really know until you go out and play that first game in Spring Training. When someone throws a 95 mph fastball in on your hands, if I can turn on that pitch and have no tightness or no pain, then I know I’m OK.

I will try to get any reports on how he is doing once spring training starts.

Mark Mulder is attempting a comeback and seems to be throwing with OK velocity.

Mulder has worked out for the Giants, Padres, Diamondbacks, Angels, and Phillies over two sessions. In the second session, Mulder, who hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2008, improved his velocity from 88 to 92 miles per hour.

The velocity range is comparable when he pitched with the A’s.

Mark Mulder? That’s about the last comeback I’d expect.
