March Rankings Update – Shortstop

We are updating our rankings for the stretch run of draft season!

We’re using Yahoo! eligibility requirements which is 5 starts or 10 appearances. These rankings assume the standard 5×5 categories and a re-draft league. If we forgot someone, please let us know in the comments and we’ll make sure he’s added for the updates. If you have questions for a specific ranker on something he did, let us know in the comments. We can also be reached via Twitter:

There will be differences, sharp differences, within the rankings. The rankers have different philosophies when it comes to ranking, some of which you’re no doubt familiar with through previous iterations. Of course the idea that we’d all think the same would be silly because then what would be the point of including multiple rankers?! Think someone should be higher or lower? Make a case. Let us know why you think that. The chart is sortable. If a ranker didn’t rank someone that the others did, he was given that ranker’s last rank +1.

Crawford doesn’t offer Fantasy owners much, unless your league considers defensive stats.

I agree. He’s a good option for deep leagues or for back-up, but I pretty much concur with the ranking he’s given, only on the basis of standard fantasy numbers.

Paul, I know you explained your rationale behind Seager’s ranking back in February but you’re going to shake your head when you look back at this in a few months.

I think just about every permutation of 2-7 is covered (okay not seriously). Those guys all seem interchangeable to me depending what category performance you need in a roto scenario.

Seager is a beast, but so are the others. I don’t see how he’s *more* beastly. He doesn’t run which really hurts him.

Are you concerned that Seager hit less than 30% FB? Since he doest steal he needs to be up there in HRs to justify his ADP.

He doesn’t run but in addition to the power, he has a much higher batting average floor and upside than most of those guys. Sure steals are scarce but I think you’re all overlooking the fact that only 25 qualified hitters hit over .300 last year. There’s a reason his ADP has held steady as the second SS off the board (not including Machado) per NFBC.

With Lindor being one and Bogaerts very close. Seager just doesn’t separate himself from his peers as much as his proponents want.

Paul which of the 2-5 have the best shot at #1 in 2018? Correa’s path seems most likely but if Story has a full season and goes 30/15+ SB that’s a compelling case especially if Machado is done as an SB contributor

Mike, any reason on the low ranking for Addison Russell? He’s only 23 and showed some marked improvements last year in hard-hit%, line drive%, K-rate and walk-rate. And he hits in a great lineup. Why so bearish?

Don’t have my projections in front of me, but will hurt your average and doesn’t steal bases. Also won’t have the same RBI luck, sure the Cubs lineup is good, but no way he knocks in 90+ again. Since he’s not much in runs, he’s a 2-category contributor at best.

The group is a little high on Peraza (9), IMHO. As a pure steals play, his poor OBP/SB% reduce his ceiling. And if he succeeds at sub 70% as DC and Steamer predict, he might just get a red light. I prefer less risky speed options down the list, Andrus (10), Nunez (13), or even Escobar (24).
