Justin Mason’s Baseball Chat – August 19th, 2024

Here is today’s chat transcript

9:58

Justin Mason: Chat will begin shortly. In the meantime, please follow me on all my social media’s (twitter, tiktok, facebook, youtube, bluesky, mastodon, threads, post, and instagram) at JustinMasonFWFB! I am doing regular podcasts on the FWFB podcast as well as three episodes a week for the Sleeper and the Bust so definitely make sure you are subscribed there as well!

10:00

Eric: Currently rostering Stephenson in a 1C h2h league. Is it worth moving to Bart? hes been killing it for the last month

10:00

Justin Mason: Yeah, in a league like that, I don’t mind moving on and streaming the position

10:00

KCBBq: Do you think Rizzo has anything left in the tank for 2025? He got dropped in my 12 team AL only 5×5 H2H league and was thinking of throwing $1 or $2 of FAAB at him.

10:01

Justin Mason: I think he is definitely worth the gamble in an AL Only. He should play everyday once he returns

10:01

Eric: Would you rather have Parker meadows or Josh lowe ROS? h2h redraft. they seem like pretty similar profiles outside of meadows platoon

10:03

Justin Mason: I think I lean meadows here because of the fact he is moving up the lineup. It think Lowe’s upside is greater, but the more likely production comes from Meadows.

10:03

Eric: Drop Lodolo for Francis? or is that a lateral move

10:04

Justin Mason: I am ok with that. While I think that Lodolo has the better stuff, the blowups are really damaging at this point in the season.

10:04

KCBBq: Who would you rather have as your last 2 keepers in a 12 team AL only 5×5 H2H league…..Hendriks $1, Joyce $1, Reese Olson $1, Festa $1, Lively $1 or Josh Smith $8?

10:05

Justin Mason: Festa and Hendriks

10:05

Keeper question: Keeper league.  How would you order these keepers for next year and the following year?  Chourio, Jared Jones, Rooker, O. Cruz.

10:05

Justin Mason: Chourio, Jones, Cruz, Rooker

10:06

Playoff bound: Lodolo and Nolan Jones both hit the wire in my 12 tm. Would you chase the high for both, if you’re dropping marginal pitching talent?

10:06

Justin Mason: I would. Both have massive upsides

10:06

KCBBq: Is Kavadas a keeper at $1 or $2 in a 12 team AL only 5×5 H2H league?

10:06

Justin Mason: Probably not.

10:07

John: I’m in a 12 team Ottoneu points league and my team is in the midst of a rebuild. My goal is to get young, cheap assets with upside. Would you trade $1 Robbie Ray and $5 Bailey Ober for $7 Bobby Miller and $8 Junior Caminero?

10:07

Justin Mason: That is tough because I love Ober, but I would

10:08

Justin Mason: Prefer to just trade Ray for Caminero if that gets it done, but I could understand if it couldn’t

10:08

Rickey: Would you consider starting Camineiro over Volpe if I dont have a particular need for steals?

10:08

Justin Mason: I don’t think I would yet

10:08

Guest: have you ever missed out on a 1st place in a roto because you held a DTD Jake Fraley for nearly 2 weeks in April only for him to go 0/16 in 5 games with you? boy I hope I never do… but if so, lesson learned!

10:08

Justin Mason: I lost first place in a 20 team dynasty league on the last day because Gregor Blanco scored two runs after coming on as a pinch runner.

10:09

Flags fly at half mast: I went all in and traded for Chisholm, Joe Ryan, Grayson Rodriguez, Herston Kjerstad, and Austin Riley. I was in first for a few glorious days. No question to ask. Just bummed.

10:09

Justin Mason: Pour one out for you

10:09

Yankee E: How confident are you in Houck, Buehler, Bobby Miller and Crotchet in 12-team H2H?  Are you dropping some or all?  The waiver wire is a little sparse, but I hate having that many spots devoted to so-so pitchers with potential.

10:11

Justin Mason: I don’t have a ton of confidence in any of them to be honest. I think Houck has started to tire, but he is probably the one I have the most confidence in. I think Crochet is limited over his next few starts and then gets shut down and I have no idea what to make of Miller and Buehler right now.

10:11

Martin: ROS: Adolis Garcia or Randy Arozarena

10:11

Justin Mason: Garcia

10:11

Infield: I have to drop one: M. Garcia, Hoerner, or Volpe.  Who you dropping?

10:13

Justin Mason: Hoerner

10:13

Kevin: Lost Greene and Glasnow this week in a QS league.  Do you trust Merrill Kelly 켈리 going forward?

10:13

Justin Mason: I trust him to a point, but he won’t make up for what you lost.

10:13

MartinEllinger: Parker Meadows or Lane Thomas ROS?

10:13

Justin Mason: Meadows

10:13

Woo: Start Woo @ LAD today?

10:13

Justin Mason: yes

10:13

Yankee E: Are you trusting Schwellenbach versus Philly this week?

10:14

Justin Mason: I am trusting him in deeper formats, but not in 10s and 12s

10:14

Mookie Time: Hey there, I have Neto, Tovar, Semien, and Gimenez in a points league.  We have to activate IR guys within 10 days, who do you drop to activate Betts?

10:14

Justin Mason: Giminez

10:14

Deep League ROS Queries: Hi Justin, who do you think closes in TB? At 1B do you like Donovan, Yepez, Dezenzo or Kavadas? And Jon Gray or Civale? Thanks again, Justin.

10:14

Justin Mason: I picked up Uceta in leagues last night but I think it is a committee. I would go with Yepez and Gray

10:14

Nicholas: You okay with rolling Bryce Miller against the Dodgers in a 12 team points league?

10:14

Justin Mason: I am

10:15

Britton: Astros’ Shay Whitcomb.  Worth an add in 12 team roto?  Should I pick him up? Shay or Nay?

10:15

Justin Mason: Probably not. Just don’t think he plays enough

10:15

Houck or Huck: Think Houck is a hold or drop for points leagues?  His schedule eases for a minute but remains a tough spot over ROS.

10:16

Justin Mason: I am holding for right now but it is a short leash

10:16

Guest: but at least that Blanco situation wasn’t your fault!

10:16

Justin Mason: I try and remind myself that all the time lol

10:16

Yankee E: Meadows or Cedric Mullins?  Both seem to platoon.

10:16

Justin Mason: I love Mullins, so I am biased

10:16

The old professor: Okay rolling out Taj for 2 starts this week?

10:16

Justin Mason: yeah, I am

10:16

Broken Bat: Dodger SP concerns, Freeman injury, Padres are the team I wouldn’t want to play. Braves… no Albies, Zachary, Riley, and Soler iffy. Phillies… going thru a “ thing” but… this is wide op n this year for a team that gets hot.

10:17

Justin Mason: Yeah, I still think it all goes through LA, but this is going to be a really fun stretch run and playoff season

10:17

Chip: Please rank these waiver wire SPs ROS: Festa, Francis, Perez, Nelson, Bido. 12-team, QS league.

10:17

Justin Mason: Francis, Festa, Perez, Nelson, Bido

10:17

Guest: if Joe Ryan were on the Diamondbacks, would his arm have fallen off by now after they let him pitch because he felt fine? can’t believe what they’ve done with Ketel

10:18

Justin Mason: loooooool

10:18

Justin Mason: point awarded

10:18

Justin Mason: that being said, Marte has a long history of injuries and while the team takes some blame, he does too

10:18

The old professor: Brandon Lowe or Gavin Lux ROS?

10:18

Justin Mason: Lux

10:18

Decisions Decisions: Who would you drop in a points league to activate Edman: Justin Martinez, Houck, or Ryan Walker?

10:19

Justin Mason: If you need saves badly, I think it;s Houck. If not, Martinez

10:19

Kate: Is Arrighetti getting bumped from the Astros rotation with Verlander returning?

10:19

Justin Mason: I think they go to a six man

10:19

ABABAB: Nootbaar over L Butler this week?  Butler has cooled and Noot faces a string of righties.

10:20

Justin Mason: I am ok with that, but I think it is pretty even

10:20

Tim: im in a 14t H2H dynasty 7×7 (standard 5, BB, TB); I’m about to lose Kim to the IL but am covered and this gives me a free roster spot. I’m set with pitching so was gonna take a flier on Nolan Jones and see if he’s any better than Nate Lowe or Jo Adell as an extra bench guy. Do you rate him near or better than either of those? Do you rate him at all?

10:20

Justin Mason: I think he is about the same as those guys. Big upside with a lot of downside

10:20

The old professor: Lawrence Butler or Cedanne Rafaela ROS?

10:20

Justin Mason: Butler

10:20

Kate: How do you feel about Musgrove ROS and going forward?  My understanding is he’s still pitching with a bone spur in his elbow right?  Is this something that will need surgery in the offseason?

10:21

Justin Mason: I am always concerned with elbow issues in season especially when he struggled with issues last season too. I have him in a number of leagues, but I am not pinning my hopes of championships on him. I think he will definitely get it cleaned up in the offseason.

10:21

Kate: Does Seranthony Dominguez hold this Os closer role ROS?  Or is this temporary?

10:21

Justin Mason: I think he definitely could

10:21

Kate: Is Lars Nootbaar a platoon bat going forward?  Does he get back full PT next year?

10:22

Justin Mason: Really depends on what the Cardinals do in the offseason. I think he should get an opportunity, but they may not give it to him.

10:22

The old professor: My last reliever in a saves/ holds league robertson or Aroldis ?

10:22

Justin Mason: Aroldis

10:24

Kate: Anything sustainable going on with Osvaldo Bido?

10:24

Justin Mason: The numbers are definitely intriguing. He is allowing more walks, but I think that is by design so he doesn’t give up the long ball. I haven’t watched him recently and may need to sit down and watch his next start.

10:25

DH: Is Luis L. Ortiz a keep in a 16 team dynasty format?

10:25

Justin Mason: I think he should be

10:25

Kate: Who’s getting everyday PT in the Mets outfield ROS?  Are Marte, Winker, Bader, etc. all kinda part-time guys now (assuming no injuries)?

10:26

Justin Mason: Nimmo and Marte play every day with a platoon of Winker and Bader?

10:26

Justin Mason: Bader’s defense actually could keep him in full time.

10:27

Justin Mason: Though with all of these guys, a light breeze could cause someone to miss time and then there isn’t a crowded situation

10:27

Christina: if the season ended now, who would you move forward with at 2B with Marte? Gleyber or M. Garcia? I’m thinking Gleyber if he bounces back is better, but I’m not sure about that I like all those SB I get from Garcia

10:27

Justin Mason: I think I would go Garcia

10:27

Vince: Someone dropped Tatis in my 12-team redraft. I’m already assured playoffs and I picked him up. What do you expect from him ROS? I know if he gets hot he can carry a team’s offense for a week.

10:28

Justin Mason: I think once healthy, he goes back to being a stud. Massive pick up for you potentially

10:28

Christina: Is Realmuto last the point of no return? I have Wong for now and later in dynasty and wasn’t ready to have to start thinking about life without JT

10:29

Justin Mason: I think we are seeing a decline, but I don’t think this is the end. He still can hit the ball hard and has been a bit unlucky. There are some launch angle issues and I think the deadened ball hurts him more than others, but I don’t think it is over for him yet

10:29

Guest: we’re beyond “complain loudly about Carroll” but I’m still amused that he and Xavier Edwards have the same number of steals this year

10:30

Justin Mason: Edwards has been a godsend for people including me. He may end up being a league winner for some people

10:30

Kate: Why won’t the Blue Jays give Addison Barger a legit shot at PT?

10:30

Justin Mason: Because he hasn’t been very good?

10:31

Justin Mason: I do agree that they should just let him play, either in the Majors or minors.

10:31

Pistol Pete: Who is the better keeper for next season of David Festa, Christian Scott, DJ Herz, and Jackson Jobe?

10:31

Justin Mason: This is tough because all have merit. I think Jobe has the best upside

10:31

South Sider: Arozarena is 0-for-his last 15. Did he forget how to hit again? What do you expect from him ROS?

10:31

Justin Mason: I think he will be fine, but this has been a brutal stretch

10:31

JOHNNYHELLER: Yepez, Chaparro, Norby, Call, McCray & Romo all available on FAAB -go get em? IN what order for ROS and 2025?

10:33

Justin Mason: I would go and get Yepez and Call for this season, but they probably don’t have a massive future. Norby is really interesting for next season and ROS because he should play a ton. I don’t think the others are worth much outside of really deep formats.

10:33

Billy Batts: Please rank ROS: Kutter, Gavin Williams, Festa

10:33

Justin Mason: Fest, Kutter, Williams

10:33

Guest: would you believe Jack Suwinski is 4-for-45 in his latest AAA stint?

10:33

Justin Mason: I think at this point, I have given up hope

10:33

DH: How do you feel about Mark Vientos for next year? Is he a top 15 3B moving forward?

10:34

Justin Mason: I think he is in that conversation for sure, but the hit tool will always be a problem for him and give him a terrible floor. His draft cost will determine a lot for me. He could be a bargain or way too expensive.

10:34

Doo-Doo: You probably hate these questions but in a 16 tm h2h playoff how would you rate this rotation: Freddy P, Ober, Ronel, Steele & Bibee categories: IP, QS, ERA, WHIP, K9 and SLDs

10:35

Justin Mason: I am kind of in love with it.

10:35

Charlie: Vodnik or Foley ROS? Need SV but also need to not blow up ratios. Could also stick with Y. Cano

10:35

Justin Mason: Foley

10:35

Jeff: Would you rather have Gallen or Schawllenbach for the next month?

10:35

Justin Mason: Gallen

10:35

Honkus Wagner: dropped Bobby Miller for a streaming slot. will i regret it before the season ends?

10:36

Justin Mason: I honestly have no idea what to expect from him ROS. I don’t think you should regret it even if he ends up being good. It is the right process at this point.

10:36

Hanging on…: Been a rough year of injuries for me, but somehow I’m in position for a playoff spot. In keeping my team afloat I’ve burned all but my last allowed waiver move. Zebby and Kopech are available (drop Hoffman I think). Do you gamble, burn that last move to solidify the spot now, and hope there’s no major offensive injury left on your team that the wire can plug? Or better to keep that last move freed up if I need it?

10:37

Justin Mason: If you need a closer, I am grabbing Kopech now. Potential elite closer for the best team in baseball? Yes please.

10:37

Rugrats: Cody Bradford vs Zebby, who’s better ROS in a 6×6 wins and QS league? Zebby is more skilled, but MN seems to limit their rookies to 5 innings unless they are cruising, and Bradford’s matchups look amazing (PIT,CWS,OAK,LAA,SEA,TOR,OAK,LAA)

10:38

Justin Mason: Give me Bradford. Zebby is still an unknown and while I am intrigued by him, Bradford has been good and that schedule is amazing

10:38

Tim: I’m prepared to be without Soriano for the remainder of 24, how concerned are you about the arm fatigue?

10:38

Justin Mason: I don’t want to freak out yet, but it is concerning. Could just be a guy that isn’t used to pitching this many innings tho.

10:38

E: Who is my keeper catcher in 14 team dynasty for next year: JT Realmuto or Tyler stephenson … or cut both when the time comes?

10:38

Justin Mason: REalmuto still for me

10:38

Tim: Bowden Francis only went from 22% to 24% owned in Yahoo after yesterday. Too many people sleeping?

10:39

Justin Mason: Too many people that have turned their attention to football.

10:39

Vince: Del Castillo is hitting pretty well but I have Rutschman and even when he sits he often pinch hits. Don’t really have extra bench space, but would you pick him up in a 12-teamer over say, Tyler Fitzgerald once (if?) he goes back to being a pumpkin? I feel the O’s could rest Rutschman more often as the season draws to a close.

10:40

Justin Mason: No, I would rather have the IF/OF guy that can plug holes over the back up catcher

10:40

Showbusiness77: Finals starts today in my 10-team H2H pts. League only 5 adds allowed over the 2 weeks. Would you let it ride with Zac Gallen/Merrill Kelly (my worst pitchers) or pickup someone hot like a Martin Perez or Jonathan Cannon?

10:40

Justin Mason: I think I would ride with Gallen/Kelly

10:40

The Horror, The Horwitz: Cleanup Hitter on bad team: Andrew Vaughn or Spencer Horwitz. (OBP league)

10:40

Justin Mason: Tough, but Horwitz

10:40

Cole World: Is $15 G-Cole too much to pay in AL only keeper for Bryce Miller and Kyle “Not Dead Yet” Tucker? (Tucker would sub in for Mullins/Langford/Springer once revived)

10:41

Justin Mason: I don’t think it is too much

10:41

Pitchers: Bradford, Springs, Bello, Festa, who is out?

10:41

Justin Mason: Springs

10:41

Doo-Doo: I made this dashboard that I send out to my league weekly. No questions I’m just proud of it.

10:41

Justin Mason: OMG! That is amazing!

10:41

Justin Mason: Teach me your ways

10:41

Biscuit: Can’t believe I am asking this but in a 16 team league, 7×7 with holds, would you sub in Kahnle for Fried, Bello or Burnes? Bello has been good lately, but the Sneks are a strong offense. Fried and Burnes have been struggling.

10:42

Justin Mason: I don’t mind subbing in for Fried. He scares me right now

10:42

Showbusiness77: 10-tm H2H pts made it to finals. I have Muncy and Buxton on IL. My league has 4 UTIL spots. What batters if any would you drop to activate them? (Cowser, Toglia are my worst bats, Semien seems to be heating up). Or would you make different moves prior to Muncy being activated today and just keep him and Buxton on IL (break in case of glass)?

10:42

Justin Mason: Maybe just keep muncy on the IL in case of a setback for right now

10:43

Justin Mason: If I did drop someone, it would be Toglia since the Rockies start a road trip today

10:43

Charlie: 10 teamer keep 5: Judge ($59), Gilbert ($23), Witt Jr. ($17), Ober ($14), Imanaga ($13), Cole ($12), Santander ($7), J. Duran ($5), Flaherty ($5). Thanks!

10:44

Justin Mason: Witt, Duran, Ober, Cole, Gilbert, Flaherty

10:44

Showbusiness77: 10-team H2H points league finals start today: Would you drop a backup bat to roll with a 5th Closer? (league only has 3 RP slots (I have Hader/Yates/Devin Williams) but I have Mason Miller SP/RP to roll with 4 and I COULD pickup Kopech and/or Ryan Walker for more of the same. Other option is wait until there is an SP I no longer need but that will be a full week into the 2 week finals.

10:44

Justin Mason: I don’t mind doing that at all. Just know that one terrible outing may bury you because of lack of innings to make up for it.

10:45

Tim: On a scale of 10, how confident are you in a H2H dynasty rotation of: Nola, Ober, Crawford, Wacha, C. Sanchez, Pepiot, Bello, Ortiz, Francis, Povich? I’m missing Senga, Olson, Soriano, Garrett due to injury. Sorry for the rate my team post

10:45

Justin Mason: 6.9

10:45

Spot Startin’: Francis or Boyd? Or just matchups?

10:45

Justin Mason: Play the matchups for me.

10:45

Jace is the Place: Jace Jung’s eye seems to have ported over from the minors. Is he a good OBP play over a more established but struggling bat like Verdugo?

10:46

Justin Mason: I think he should be. The strikeouts may be an issue, but he does have a great understanding of the strike zone and the Tigers have shown they like those guys

10:46

LenFuego: What is up with Austin Riley’s x-ray being “inconclusive”?

10:46

Justin Mason: Sometimes swelling can prevent a good image and you need to wait for it to come down

10:46

Kingpin: Standard 5×5 NL-only keeper league. I’m in 1st by a single point. Had Kim & Nimmo get hurt last night. Kim is my only SS eligible player. WW is craptastic. Is DDLS ($5 in 25 & $9 in 26) & Kim ($8/$16) too much to give up for Adames ($11/$15 if he stays in NL)?

10:47

Justin Mason: Feels like a lot to give up, but flags fly forever

10:47

Getting tired of waiting: Weekly HxH with playoffs, 12 team redraft. Have been patient with Langford all year but am just about done with him. I’ll be back on the train next year but am thinking of moving on at this point

10:47

Justin Mason: Yeah, I get it. He is riding on my bench in a lot of spots.

10:48

Pitchers: Lodolo also available, would you take him over any of Bradford, festa, springs, Bello?

10:48

Justin Mason: over Springs, yes

10:48

Big Starter: Bryce Miller @LAD or Cole vs. CLE?

10:48

Justin Mason: Cole

10:48

Guest: at the 3/4 point here, what is the biggest ERA gap you would consider being able to make up if things go right in a 12t? depends on multiple factors ofc, but about how careful to be with waiver pitchers/streamers if you need ERA? (Arrighetti vs White Sox didn’t go great!)

10:49

Justin Mason: So, what I would do is build a spreadsheet with your standings and start playing around with adding/subtracting earned runs to see how much your ERA moves. I think people would be amazed how much they can move at this time of the year

10:49

Justin Mason: but each league is different and so I do this with all my leagues

10:50

Adenolith: Looking for OF speed in my H2H league. Would you rather P. Meadows or Crow-Armstrong?

10:50

Justin Mason: Meadows

10:50

Showbusiness77: THX for answers! <3 Would you activate Verlander vs. BOS, or @PHI? Or would you do both or neither? My 3 options for my FINALS matchup is to (1) wait until JV’s @PHI start because I can drop a different pitcher by then. (2) activate him and drop my backup bat or Merrill Kelly or Zac Gallen (and use BOTH of JV) starts. Or I could add a WW pitcher: (Martin Perez, Jonathan Cannon, Shane Baz) and use them and just leave JV on the IL (break in case of glass).

10:51

Justin Mason: I would activate for Kelly.

10:51

Charlie: Thoughts on Corbin Carroll ROS and next year? Thanks for the great chat!

10:52

Justin Mason: He seems to be turning a bit of a corner since the break, but he is just not running which is frustrating considering that was a big part of his value in draft season. I still think he will be a stud long term, but this season has been aggravating to say the least

10:52

The old professor:

  • Josh bell worth an add in a Roto where I’m in need of some hrs? Or is there another util power bat  I’m missing?
10:53

Justin Mason: I think he is worth the add until Walker comes back

10:53

Showbusiness77: Which 3 bats (in order) would you possibly pickup right now in 2-week 10-tm H2H points finals starting today: Soler, Carlos Santana, B-Rodgers, James Wood, Chourio, Bride, Kerry C, Neto, Friedl, Joc, Call, Sheets, Vaughn, India, Shea? Thank you!

10:54

Justin Mason: Chourio, Neto, Wood

10:54

Winker Taylor Soler Spy: 12 team H2H 5×5 OBP redraft. I should be making the playoffs, and have a fairly strong SP roster (Burnes, Skenes, Ragans, Ober headline the group). Should I drop Crochet for one of R Walker, Erceg, Kopech, J Martinez? Waiver wire for SPs is barren (M Boyd, Kutter, R Nelson).

10:54

Justin Mason: Give me Kopech

10:54

Guest: Is Ben Rice still startable at catcher al only? Worth keeping for next year without getting catcher eligibility?

10:55

Justin Mason: I think once Rizzo comes back, Rice gets sent down. I don’t know that he is going to be keeper worthy because I would expect the Yankees to bring someone in

10:55

Justin Mason: Wow! Made it through all the questions with five minutes to spare

10:55

Panik! At the Disco!: When Kyle Tucker returns, who’s the cut for my increasingly crowded OF/UT spots: Springer or Toglia? Rest of OF/UT spots are H. Ramos, James Woods, Colton Cowser, Riley Greene. 12 tm H2H categories with OBP. Thanks!

10:56

Justin Mason: I think I drop Springer

10:56

Love Is A Battenfield: ROS: Luis Garcia or Brandon Lowe? 12 team H2H 5×5 OBP.

10:56

Justin Mason: Garcia

10:56

JOHNNYHELLER: Romo or Higashioka ROS? Romo in 2025?

10:56

Justin Mason: Romo for this year and next

10:56

Roger: Sorry for the long list but if you had to sit 3 guys this week who would they be? Tough to evaluate matchups vs pitcher quality. Ober @SD, Brown @BAL, Springs @Oak, Civale @OAK, Festa vs STL, Zebby vs STL, Sanchez @ATL, Lugo LAA/PHI.

10:57

Justin Mason: Springs, Civale, Brown

10:57

JOHNNYHELLER: And thank you for these chats!!!

10:57

Justin Mason: You’re welcome!

10:57

Burly Burleson: Seems like he is a full time platoon guy now sadly, thoughts on him the for rest of the year? Not like he was producing vs lefties but still sucks.

10:58

Justin Mason: Yeah, I wish they would just let him play to be honest

10:58
