Justin Mason Baseball Chat – May 15th, 2018

Lots of Andrew Heaney and keeper league questions today.

8:59

Justin Mason: Hey everyone! Let’s have some fun. Today’s chat will likely only be 30-40 minutes as I am pretty jet lagged from vacation. Please give me format and size of leagues for context. Just a reminder that I will answer as many questions as I can, but please don’t repeat questions. If I can’t get to your questions then hit me up on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008744507752 or on twitter @justinmasonfwfb.

9:00

Slurp: How do I value odor in a redraft league? What type of closer is a reasonable ask in a trade?

9:00

Justin Mason: I still value Odor pretty highly. Would be looking for a guy like Morrow or Hand

9:01

Pollack replacement: Hi and thanks, Justin. Looking to replace the lost Runs and SBs, and some of the pop, now that Pollock is banged up. 10 team, H2H. Buxton, Braun, Kingery on the wire. Preference among those?

9:01

Justin Mason: Prefer Braun unless you are shooting the moon and believe Buxton can turn it around

9:01

seth: Gausman velocity looking better, is he a potential buy high?

9:02

Justin Mason: I am always a sucker for him. Some people might think they should get out from under him, so I am buying.

9:02

TM: 8 team roto, only 3 bench spots.  do i need to continue to stash berrios and quintana and hope for better results? what about buxton? thinking of swapping him out for Brett Gardner off waivers

9:02

Justin Mason: With only three bench spots in a league that size, I am fine cutting bait on anyone I didn’t take in the top 40-50

9:03

Guest: My Archer for his Corbin and Simmons (Seager replacement for me).  Corbin’s velo issues got me worried, but Archer is killing me.  Do I pull the trigger?

9:03

Justin Mason: No. Corbin scares me

9:03

Slamboni: 10 tm roto AL only. The OF I have amassed consists of Betts, Trout, JDM, Deshields. Should I try to swap Mookie for Sale and another OFer? Or ride this out until I stack up stats and then try for that deal?

9:03

Justin Mason: I would do that deal if I needed the pitching.

9:04

Andy: What type of SP would you target if you’re looking to flip Realmuto in a 12 team league?

9:04

Justin Mason: Bauer, McCullers etc

9:04

Ray of Hope: Chris Archer has never been amazing, but he’s also never been this bad. What gives?

9:05

Justin Mason: I think there are some pitch mix and sequencing issues going on as well as getting unlucky. I am holding or buying. I think he figures it out.

9:05

Salty: Justin – R McMahon is up in a few days and produces.  Buying or selling?  And would you rather have him or Kinsler as a backup to Odor?

9:05

Justin Mason: Depends on the extent of the Lemaheiu injury. I would still rather have Kinsler because that playing time is for sure.

9:06

QMan: Correa for Torres and Vlad Jr in 10 team keep forever- Al lineup- 8 category : standard 5 + obp, slug, ks- which side do u like better?

9:06

Justin Mason: Correa unless I am rebuilding and then it is still really close. Would depend on how many keepers I got.

9:07

Ray Liotta as Shoeless Joe: Have pitching depth in a 10-teamer (W,L,QS) and jettisoned Robbie Ray with Adam Eaton for a third rounder and Jake Faria. Any reason I shouldn’t dump Faria over a guy like Newcomb or Buehler?

9:07

Justin Mason: I prefer Faria to Newcomb, but Buehler is compelling, if he can build innings in starts. In a 10-teamer, he is the upside play I want.

9:08

Guest: Gotta clear some roster space to accommodate players coming off the DL/NA slot.  Cutting two from positions where I have a glut: Jose Martinez, Gregory Polanco, Conforto, Fulmer, Pivetta, Soroka, Flaherty.

9:08

Justin Mason: Fulmer and Soroka

9:08

Donner: Trade my Olson for his Cozart? Lost Corey Seagor and have been looking for a replacement. OFs are Franchy, Marte, Polanco, Soler, and Margot

9:08

Justin Mason: sure

9:08

Matt: Do you feel more confident in Domingo Santana or Byron Buxton heating up, and when? And is Matt Olson droppable based on what you expect for HR and BA (I have Smoak and Moreland and Bird on the DL)? Thanks Justin!

9:09

Justin Mason: That is risk vs reward. I think Buxton has the upside, but the lesser chance he gets there. If you are shooting for the moon go with Buxton. If not, Santana

9:09

High 5 Ghost: Thanks for the chat Justin!

I’m tinkering with my IF in a 12 team league that counts BB. Can you rank these guys ROS? Thanks!

Gallo, Suarez , Davidson, Bour, Martinez, Chapman

9:09

Justin Mason: Gallo, Martinez, Suarez, Chapman, Bour, Davidson

9:09

Tiger Balm: Is Christin Stewart a must own prospect for the second half?  He is smashing in AAA (non PCL), and seems to combine improving K% with superb power.

9:10

Justin Mason: In deeper formats, he is worth the stash, but he may not even get the call if the Tigers don’t want to start his clock.

9:10

Jomaha: Is Pillar a better SB play than Michael A Taylor at  this point?

9:10

Justin Mason: No

9:11

Sandy Ravage: 10 team mixed standard roto. I am leading HRs by a decent amount, should I move Stanton for Severino and a replacement bat or am I under/overvaluing both players in that deal?

9:11

Justin Mason: I like that deal. Win the league not every trade.

9:11

Sabo Knows Bo: Heaney looking like a legit SP4. Is SP3 his ceiling?

9:11

Justin Mason: I think SP3 is his ceiling. Don’t forget that he was a top prospect before being traded twice in a day and getting hurt.

9:12

Ray Liotta as Shoeless Joe: Evan Gattis coming up clutch with the steal this weekend! But what I’d really like is some solid power from the catcher spot. Is he worth keeping in an OBP league? Hundley, Suzuki, Barnhart, Gomes, Lucroy on the wire…

9:12

Justin Mason: Depends on what you need. I am holding in most of my leagues, but Barnhart is really interesting especially since the Reds traded away Meseraco.

9:12

gyroball: How would you rank these rookies ROS: Fernando Romero, Freddy Peralta, and Nick Kingham?

9:13

Justin Mason: Romero, Kingham, Peralta

9:13

Moelicious: What is wrong with Altuve?

9:14

Justin Mason: I think he’ll be fine. Sounds like he could lead off if springer misses time. Maybe that is the spark he needs.

9:14

Steve : Good morning,  What % FAAB would you use on f Peralta 12 team roto?

9:14

Justin Mason: 0

9:14

Nathan: Do you believe more in Kinsler or Cozart for the ros?

9:14

Justin Mason: Cozart

9:14

Rickey H.: In a 10-team mixed, am I good to go with Cole, Paxton, Bumgarner, Keuchel, Hendricks, L Castillo as my SPs? Or do I need to trade for one of the Big Four?

9:15

Justin Mason: I think you are ok. I still wouldn’t mind packaging two for one of them though in a shallow league like that.

9:15

Mr. Nor’easter: Please rank these pitchers ROS: Faria, Duffy, Gibson, Mahle.

9:15

Justin Mason: Gibson, Duffy, Faria, Mahle

9:15

Jack: Hi Justin! 12 AL Only keeper, I’m calling it a season. Been offered his Joe Jiminez for my Eduardo Nunez and Jose De Leon. Jiminez doesn’t need to be activated until Next season (so he wont count against my auction $$) and will be $4 once activated. Thoughts?

9:16

Justin Mason: Never invest in “closers of the future” in keeper leagues. They rarely pan out.

9:16

Steve : ROS gausman is a #__starter for a 12 team roto mixed league

9:16

Justin Mason: 40

9:16

Joe : Matt Adams thoughts?  Do you think he proves legit with regular AB while Zimm out?

9:17

Justin Mason: I believe in him. I worry that he loses time once Zimmerman comes back, but the Nets have been willing to play him in the outfield too, so maybe there is a chance he can get to 450-500 PAs.

9:17

Steve: Who are a handful of guys that could be the next star 1st baseman?  (Even if it’s due to positional change)

9:17

Justin Mason: Devers, Vlad Jr, Bobby Bradley

9:18

David: Wacha has decent traditional fantasy stats, how concerned are you about him though?

9:19

Justin Mason: Not overly concerned. There is regression coming , but swinging strike rate is in line. Walk rate will lead to probably a 4 ERA or so, but that is usable.

9:20

Closer Conundrum : Didn’t finish, my bad.  10 team H2H, need saves, move Ozuna for Jansen?  Rest of OF is Judge, Jones, Conforto, Mancini, and Teoscar

9:20

Justin Mason: Yeah, I could do that, but I am still concerned with Jansen and his veto.

9:20

Justin Mason: velo

9:20

John: 12 team H2H trading Donaldson for Encarnacion. Both started the year slow, who fairs better ROS?

9:20

Justin Mason: Donaldson

9:20

Woodrow the Impaler: Just traded Archer and Hader in a 12 team mixed roto for Story and Devers. Was near the bottom of homers and ribs – not terrible?

9:20

Justin Mason: I like that move

9:20

Nathan: Beltre was dropped in an 11 team roto. Burn a top waiver claim for him? I have Arenado and Donaldson but I could use the odd man out as trade bait.

9:21

Justin Mason: No

9:21

Juan: Is c Anderson someone who should be rostered or streamed in 12 team roto?

9:21

Justin Mason: Depends on size of benches, but I would only want him as my last starter right now.

9:21

Aaron: Fortunate Albies owner looking to capitalize on his start, and I need catching help badly in a 2C league.  Can keep him for 3 more years in the 15th round.  Is a return of Sanchez (can be kept once more in the 12th) and Altuve (can’t be kept) a fair return for those future years or should I be looking for more?

9:21

Justin Mason: I think that would be a great haul

9:22

Ronald Acuña McDonaldson: 10 team H2H keeper league (add $5 to keeper’s salary each year) – would you trade a non keeper Bryant and $8 Hoskins (could be kept for at least 5 years) for non keeper trout?

9:22

Justin Mason: yup

9:22

Razor Ramon: Thoughts on Solarte ROS. He’s obviously a sell-high, but man is he raking? Potential value I could get in a 14 team 6×6?

9:23

Justin Mason: Probably not going to get much. Maybe like a Pivetta or Gibson.

9:23

HoHum: 12 team weekly.  Which starter would you drop?  Caleb Smith, Luke Weaver, Cahill or Gohara?

9:23

Justin Mason: Smith

9:23

High 5 Ghost: Gausman or T Ross in 12 tm lg?

9:23

Justin Mason: Gausman

9:23

Well-Heeled Joe: Holding, buying or selling Maeda? His underlying numbers looks good, but he’s been pasted by a series of underwhelming offenses.

9:23

Justin Mason: Holding.

9:23

Juan: Are you still starting berrios in 10 team al only roto?

9:23

Justin Mason: Yeah

9:23

Paul: Where has my Paul Goldschmidt gone?

9:23

Justin Mason: He is pressing. I think he will turn it around. Maybe not to last year’s levels though with the humidor.

9:24

Chance: Tanking any chance on chance Sisco? Can he be relevant in a 10 team we?

9:24

Justin Mason: 10 team mixed? If one catcher than probably not. deeper leagues, sure.

9:24

Soroka the Casbah: Can I cut Soroka if I have the following for SP: Verlander, Cole, Ty Ross, Wacha, Maeda, Lucchesi, Faria, Heaney, Samardzija and Musgrove?

9:24

Justin Mason: I would probably keep him over Musgrove.

9:24

Webster: Nunez a hold?

9:24

Justin Mason: yes

9:24

Moelicious: Bullish or bearish on Caleb Smith? The periphs aren’t special but he has a 11+ K/9

9:25

Justin Mason: He needs that park to survive, so if you can afford to only play him at home vs certain teams, than go ahead. If not, then cut.

9:25

Rich: Thoughts on Andrew Heaney?  Do his skills support his results to date, and what kind of innings limit is he likely to face?  Thanks!

9:26

Justin Mason: I love Heaney. The innings is the big question, so I don’t know that he can pitch 150 this year, but the skills and eye test are there for me.

9:26

Travioli: Right now who’s a better sell high candidate? Mikolas or Newcomb? Or do you ride them out for a little while longer?

9:27

Justin Mason: Newcomb is the better sell high candidate, but he also has the higher ceiling. Mikolas is safer, but not that sexy.

9:27

Sean: Traded ozuna for archer in 10 team 8×8 h2h cats (BB, H, TB and QS, CG, L are extra categories). Large benches so most SPs are owned. How did I do?

9:27

Justin Mason: Seems fair

9:27

My boy blue: 10 team H2H – please rank Taillon, T-Ross, Caleb Smith and Jack Flaherty ROS. Thank you!

9:27

Justin Mason: Flaherty, Taillon, Ross, Smith

9:28

dee’s nuts: Yu starting Yu today?  He’s been crazy inconsistent, coming off the DL against a surprisingly good braves offense.  Warning bells are going off that he’s going to wreck my ratios before the week even gets started.

9:28

Justin Mason: Depends on depth of league, but Iw ill tell you that he didn’t cross my mind for Tout Daily

9:28

Dave: 12-team Roto. What do you make of Kyle Schwarber? Good OBP but not doing that much in terms of counting stats and doesn’t play everyday. Would it be crazy to drop him when I have loaded outfield already (Blackmon, Marte, Pillar, Haniger, Cordero)? Thanks much

9:29

Justin Mason: I have never been a fan of him. Poor defense and platoon splits hold him back. No problem dropping him.

9:29

Justin Mason: but try and trade him first.

9:29

Steve: Heaney or Caleb smith rest of season?

9:29

Justin Mason: Heaney

9:29

Oddball Herrera: As much as it may pain an Albies owner, you have to consider a sell high, right? 12 teamer, max what round player would you require coming back? 2nd? 3rd?

9:30

Justin Mason: I would shoot for the moon on him right now. Try and go get a 1st or 2nd rounder.

9:30

Squints: Will Ozuna relocate his power stroke

9:30

Justin Mason: I believe he will.

9:30

Bob: Gregory Polanco over/under — 25 homers, 15 sbs?

9:30

Justin Mason: Over on the power. Under on the Sbs

9:30

Bart: In a 12 team H2H league, If you had to make a decision now, who would you ‘keep’ for next season, C Seager or G Torres?

9:30

Justin Mason: Seager

9:30

Pablo: Drop Pivetta to add Peralta?

9:30

Justin Mason: No

9:30

Mustin Jason: Will Daniel Murphy ever play? Where would you rank Musgrove among SPs if he came back today?

9:31

Justin Mason: Yes he will. Musgrove would be outside my top 60

9:31

Bob: Disappointing start for Rhys… How many homers does he end up with at seasons’ end?

9:31

Justin Mason: 28

9:31

Joe : Brandon Nimmo working his way into Mets plans or was it a one weekend fling with Bruce on paternity?

9:31

Justin Mason: I have given up trying to predict it.

9:31

Dak: have kela, Norris, Jansen, and Diaz as closers in 12 team standard 6/6 obp, slg, save, holds league. Lost Seager and Cano to injury. Safe to give up Jansen? Worried about Norris holding job long term

9:32

Justin Mason: I am not giving up on Jansen yet.

9:32

Al: For middle-relief ratios, please rank Kelly, Winkler, Carle

9:32

Justin Mason: that is the right order

9:33

BK: 10 team fgpts league, very shallow. corbin + round 10 for stanton + round 20 okay?

9:33

Justin Mason: yes

9:33

Doug: Alex Reyes top 30 SP ROS when he returns?

9:34

Justin Mason: I don’t know about top 30 as I don’t know what kind of innings he gets for the season and in starts, but the talent is there and yesterday’s rehab start was really impressive and shows me that he should get slotted right in the rotation.

9:34

Bart: What’s your thoughts on Matt Olson?

9:34

Justin Mason: He is what he is. Power bat that will hurt your average because he strikes out too much.

9:34

migdog in the fog: yo Justin! drop Greg Holland for Blake Parker?

9:34

Justin Mason: nah

9:34

Razor Ramon: 14tm OBP H2H, Beef Castillo or Barnhart? Both equally shitty, equally friendly launching pads at home.

9:35

Justin Mason: dude, please don’t swear. Barnhart.

9:35

Gerge: Trade Dozier for Bellinger?

9:35

Justin Mason: no

9:35

Anders: Which side would you rather have: Jose Abreu/Nick Pivetta or Blake Snell/Matt Adams?

9:35

Justin Mason: Abreu

9:35

Anders: Just picked up Vlad Jr. in a 14 team redraft, too soon?

9:36

Justin Mason: yeah, unless you have deep benches and can afford the dead bench spot.

9:36

Bobby: Jake Bauers running a .210 ISO in AAA. Think he has added enough power to be a solid 1B in fantasy?

9:37

Justin Mason: not really. Unless he made a change I don’t know about.

9:37

Matty Boy: Need power. have pitching in spades. Tanaka for C. Santana sound decent?

9:37

Justin Mason: sure

9:37

Ombudsman: Would you drop Yonder Alsonso for Jose Martinez in standard 5 category H2H league?

9:37

Justin Mason: yes

9:37

Nick: Thinking about dropping Domingo German for Freddy Peralta.  Who are you higher on?

9:37

Justin Mason: German

9:37

Bo: My Odubel for his Newcomb – even trade?

9:37

Justin Mason: no, I want Odubel

9:37

Dee’s nutz : 12 team 6×6 with 6 bench spots. Burn the top waiver number on odor?

9:37

Justin Mason: yes

9:37

NotBurtReynolds: 12 team H2H points dynasty, 15 keepers, keep forever. I drafted Franchy and Teoscar at the end of our draft with the hope they would mature into trade-assets over the course of the  year…Now owners are starting to inquire…Hold or move?(Rebuild, not trying to win this year)

9:37

Justin Mason: hold Teoscar

9:38

Guest: commish of a unlimited time, 20% bump, keep-6 league w/ auction draft.  some ppl pushing to allow for trading draft dollars, but i see a race to the bottom where if you want to win you have to mortgage next year to get the worst teams’ best players.  would you allow it?

9:38

Justin Mason: I would not. Especially if it goes into effect for next season. A rule like that needs at least a full year before it takes effect, but I wouldn’t play in a league like that personally.

9:38

Webster: Please rank Ros: K Gibson, Skaggs, Cahill, Romero

9:39

Justin Mason: Gibson, Skaggs, Romero, Cahill

9:39

Bart: What fantasy baseball league would be much more challenging than Yahoo where trades are hardly made and the vast majority of managers are barely active?

9:39

Justin Mason: NFBC

9:39

45BlowsBillygoats: Would i have balls the size of church bells to start Barria tonight, or is it just something to consider not doing?

9:40

Justin Mason: If you have those balls, please consult your doctor before making that decision. Also, I don’t trust him.

9:41

Guest: gausman has a 4.00 xfip, 4.30 fip, plays in a tough division in the AL.  (and if memory serves a not particularly friendly home park)  what am i missing?

9:42

Justin Mason: He has been great over his last four starts with a 1.50 ERA with all his pitches working.

9:42

Bip Roberts: How long am I looking at for to Buxton return to at least average stats?

9:42

Justin Mason: 50/50

9:42

Patty V: Charlie Morton (in 5×5 std Roto): Sell high? ROS Projections don’t really buy his spin rate improvement but I wonder if we all should?

9:42

Justin Mason: I buy the skills, but not the health. Depends on what you can get.

9:43

Josh: Manaea for Knebel in a QS and Sv/HLD league? I have stacked SP and the only non-streaming RPs I have are Hand and Edwards Jr.

9:43

Justin Mason: sure

9:43

Phaithful: Does Pollock’s injury add any major-league additions fantasy relevant?

9:44

Justin Mason: Probably not. Dyson probably gets more time and they add Brito or someone of that ilk.

9:44

Big Tuna : What do you make of PHI pen situation? Hunter was throwing the 8th but Seranthony has looked dominant since coming up

9:44

Justin Mason: It is a situation not to trust.

9:44

Anders: In a 14 team mixed, have Trevor Story/Jorge Soler platooning at UTIL. Is it a good idea to only start Story over Soler when the Rockies are home?

9:45

Justin Mason: Sounds like a good plan while Soler is hitting.

9:45

45BlowsBillygoats: Holding McHough in a deep pitching league in hopes he gets a SP gig.  Need the spot when Cahill returns.  OK to drop?

9:45

Justin Mason: yeah

9:45

Big Tuna : Any sense to trying to trade Altuve for another guys drafted that high if I have JoRam to take 2B? Worried that his power might not be coming and he’s just not running.

9:45

Justin Mason: sure, but don’t need to.

9:45

Big Tuna : Cut Shark in a 12 tm league if i have Cahill coming off the DL?

9:45

Justin Mason: no

9:46

Tommy: 12-team mixed keep 8 league and I’m in win-now mode. Tell me this is a no-brainer: I give Kingery, Zimmer, and Snell for Darvish, Cruz and Fowler?

9:46

Justin Mason: yeah it is

9:46

Guest: Who’s going to lose playing time in SD when Myers returns?
Jankowski, Margot, Renfroe, Franmil Reyes? It’s crowded already

9:46

Justin Mason: FRanmil probably heads back down unless he crushes right away, which I don’t believe he will.

9:46

Bip Roberts: Buxton or Odor. Which do I wait on? Need to move one for some pitching.

9:46

Justin Mason: Odoir

9:46

Big Tuna : Is Nola, CMart, Price, Gausman, Soroka, Cahill enough in a 12 tm league or should I be scared?

9:47

Justin Mason: I would be scared with the health issues those guys can have/do have

9:47

Raji: Quintana or Godley ROS?

9:47

Justin Mason: quintana

9:47

Justin Mason: but it is closer than it should be.

9:48

Moltar: I know before the season y’all were talking about The Glob, but I see a new glob this season: young, unheralded call-up pitchers. How do you differentiate between guys like Caleb Smith, Soroka, Suarez, Peralta, Barria, Eflin, Koch, Romero, guys like that? Guys who could provide strong value to pitching needy teams if they stay in the majors, but without the pedigree of a guy like Buehler.

9:49

Justin Mason: Good question. I tend to watch a lot of these guys starts and then look at the underlying numbers to see who stands out. One of the reasons I am not high on Smith or Peralta is I don’t believe in their stuff whereas Soroka has great stuff and underlying numbers.

9:50

Joe : Think Joe Bats has anything left in the tank?  He keeps himself in as good of shape as some older sluggers that continued producing (Cruz, Papi), but I can’t explain last years decline since there was no injury.

9:50

Justin Mason: It is decline in skills. Bat is slower and he has a hard time getting around on certain pitches. Eye is still there, but bat isn’t what it was.

9:50

Big Tuna : Are you holding Dustin Fowler in 12 tm leagues? I have him and Margot not hitting or running

9:51

Justin Mason: Fowler has been up for like five games. Give him time.

9:51

Tom: What the heck happened to Chapman? Is he really just a .230 hitter?

9:51

Justin Mason: I think he will fluctuate between .230-.260, but you have to be patient with him. The A’s will be because he plays great def

9:52

Jeff: Around where do you rank Mahle ROS? How much higher in a dynasty format?

9:52

Justin Mason: like top 60-70. Not a big fan.

9:52

Helpski!: How do you value Morton going forward? Top 20 SP, over/under? Im in a 12 team standard roto, been offered Sano + Morton for Ozuna + Devers, my team is short on SP but has OF/CI to spare.

9:52

Justin Mason: I think I would want a bit more than that. Especially with Morton’s health history.

9:52

Ryno: 16 tm, keep 3. Trade my Donaldson for his Dozier? I lost DJ and have no other 2B rostered (and waiver is thin). I have Shaw to plug in at 3B. Look like similar players, am I right?

9:53

Justin Mason: Yeah, I would do that if I needed the 2B

9:53

Helpski!: Ozuna or Devers for Hand sound fair? 12 team roto

9:53

Justin Mason: If I really needed the saves, but I would aim a bit higher because there is a chance Hand gets traded and is no longer a closer.

9:53

45BlowsBillygoats: Start Barria in Anaheim tonight?

9:53

Justin Mason: nah

9:53

Gerge: can you rank Franco Shaw Longoria ROS? Got to drop one.

9:54

Justin Mason: Shaw, Longo, Franco

9:54

HappyFunBall: Sell Gallo for Darvish?  Or is there something really wrong with Yu ?

9:54

Justin Mason: I think he will turn it around.n

9:54

Razor Ramon: What’s up with Jeff Samardzija? He’s been awful.

9:54

Justin Mason: Still shaking off the rust from missing the end of spring and being rushed back a bit. Give it another start before you begin to panic

9:55

Willie Calhoun: when is super 2?

9:55

Justin Mason: Like a week ago I believe willy.

9:56

Justin Mason: Alright guys, I went longer than I thought I would, but I am going to wrap it up here. If I didn’t get to your question, hit me up on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008744507752 or on twitter @justinmasonfwfb.
