Justin Mason Baseball Chat – 7/17/18

Lots of Derby and Tommy Pham questions today. Had to cut it a bit short because of a prior commitment.

8:59
Justin Mason: Hey everyone! Let’s have a great chat today! Going to be a shorter chat today (30-40 minutes) because I have an interview set up for a little while with an MLB pitcher for the FWFB podcast. Just a reminder that I will answer as many questions as I can, but please don’t repeat questions. If I can’t get to your questions then hit me up on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008744507752 or on twitter @justinmasonfwfb.

8:59
Ozzie Ozzie Albies Free: Shallow ten teamer. I have Edwin, Jose Martinez, Smoak and Brandon Belt.  I’m slipping in my power categories but also need help in Average.  Who should be my primary 1B and who should slot into my UTIL?

9:00
Justin Mason: Edwin and Belt

9:00
Tony Womack: My Baez for his Votto? Dynasty forever

9:00
Justin Mason: nah

9:00
Soriano: Any reason that I should not pick up Roberto Osuna in dynasty.

9:00
Justin Mason: Nope go right ahead

9:00
Bob K: Is Justin Bour worth dropping for Kyle Tucker in a 12-tm OBP/SLG league? Have Jose Martinez at 1B

9:00
Justin Mason: yes

9:00
brood550: So who got Machado?

9:01
Justin Mason: My sources are telling me it’s the Dodgers. FYI: I don’t have sources, just schizophrenia

9:01
RMR: Should I be at all worried about Kluber’s whiff rate declining this year?

9:01
Justin Mason: I am not worried at all about Kluber.

9:01
Micah: Thanks for the chat, Justin!

9:01
Justin Mason: Thanks for joining it!

9:02
Jake Junis Priest: How long to hold Giles in AL Only, 3 man bench?

9:02
Justin Mason: Not much longer

9:02
Raider: who is drafted higher next year, bellinger or Eugenio suarez?

9:02
Justin Mason: Bellinger based solely on upside and disrespect

9:02
Matty P: Hey Justin 12 team mixer redraft:   got offered Ed Escobar for Mike Clevinger. could use Escobar instead of Brandon Crawford at MI but my pitching staff isnt that deep. Should I ask for more or is that fair?

9:02
Justin Mason: I would want more personally. I really like clevinger

9:03
Maples: AJ Pollock or Christian Yelich in a dynasty points league?

9:03
Justin Mason: Yelich

9:03
Booney: Any AL non-closers who have a chance to pick up saves in the 2nd half?

9:03
Justin Mason: TRivino, Hildenberger, Givens (if both Britton and Brach are traded.)

9:04
Matt: 12-team H2H, mandatory keep 4. Would you trade a 5th round pick (which is essentially the first round…but lesser talent) for someone of the Hoskins/Aguilar caliber? I feel like that’s a bit much.

9:04
Justin Mason: That is tough. Probably not, but Hoskins is tempting.

9:05
Micah: Who are your favorite buy lows/stashes for the second half? Deep 12-team roto league for players who may be available to stash.

9:06
Justin Mason: Dozier, Robbie Ray, Pham, Pivetta, Chris Taylor,

9:06
Justin Mason: Add Joe Jimene to that closer question for AL stashes

9:06
Ozzie Ozzie Albies Free: Is Pham salvageable? Three Of spots and I have JDM, Jose Mart, and Billy Ham.  In need steals so BHam is stuck there.  Is Pham anywhere remotely close enough to play over Jose?

9:07
Justin Mason: Pham is a launch angle adjustment away from crushing it. I would take him over Martinez

9:07
brood550: How much would Machado’s value in a redraft league change if he went to the Dodgers or Phillies?

9:07
Justin Mason: I don’t think it changes dramatically. Some added runs and RBI, but its not like he has been great already.

9:07
Turgid: Do you believe in Freddy Peralta?

9:08
Justin Mason: I do a little. Still worried there will be the occasional blowups that are hard to predict, but he has a rotation spot on lock until the Brewers trade for someone.

9:08
tacopocket: i doubt the mets trade degrom but wouldn’t mil make a good partner?  hiura/santana/hader for degrom/familia?  is that too much?

9:09
Justin Mason: They make a great partner, but I don’t think they will move Huira or Hader honestly. Still could put together a really nice package. It is really in the Mets court if they want to move him. They should, but METS, so who knows.

9:10
54: Is Ryan Braun falling off a cliff or do you expect some up and down, this year and the next couple? If he returns from the DL and gets playtime but doesn’t hit the ground running, is he a deep league cut or a hold?

9:12
Justin Mason: I think it may be the end of the line for Braun. I mean, where does he even get the playing time? They really going to bench Thames full time or Aguilar after what he has done?

9:12
baseballdude: would you grab jon gray and/or castillo and drop any of the following in a H2H points league ROS: cueto, flaherty, pivetta, wood, f. peralta, rodon?

9:12
Justin Mason: Sure, I would grab either for Rodon. Prefer Gray if you can afford to not play him at home or Castillo if you are looking for huge upside.

9:13
Hannah Hochevar: Who would you cut (AL, OBP) of David Fletcher, A. Mondesi, and the Jorges Bonifacio and Polanco? Thanks!

9:13
Justin Mason: Fletcher

9:13
Matt: Obviously, Machado is on another level, but once he moves, will the market react? Will the guys who needed a not-necessarily-SS/3B be looking for the Justin Bours of the world? ie Will Justin Bour be fantasy relevant soon?

9:14
Justin Mason: I think Machado being moved could open the flood gates. I don’t know that it affects Bour though. The teams looking at Machado aren’t really in that market. I think Your could get moved, but he might also be a post deadline deal.

9:14
Me: Points league redraft: I have Devers and Chapman. Should I look for an upgrade. Currently in 2nd place.

9:15
Justin Mason: Not enough context. Got to give me options or tell me how deep the league is.

9:15
Parts + Gleyber: Is the home run derby going to eff up Bregman’s swing?

9:16
Justin Mason: No. The evidence of derby guys being hurt by the derby isn’t that strong.

9:16
Turgid: How funny is it that Ian Desmond is worth 0.0 WAR, but is the #3 ranked 1B (at least in my league’s format)

9:16
Justin Mason: That is fantasy for you.

9:17
brood550: What do you expect out of Enyel De Los Santos’ ROS?

9:17
Justin Mason: Kind of what we have seen so far. A guy with a homer problem and underwhelming stuff

9:17
Parts + Gleyber: Is E-Jax back as an AL Only streamer?

9:18
Justin Mason: Only for the truly insane. Never trust Edwin Jackson.

9:18
Frank: What type of fantasy player does miguel andujar project to be?

9:19
Justin Mason: I think he could be like a 20/10 guy with a decent average. Not going to light up the box scores, but super solid and overall contributor in a nice lineup if he doesn’t get blocked. The issue becomes whether he gets blocked.

9:20
Me, me, pick ME!: Isn’t the biggest All-Star snub Nicholas Castellanos? He’s actually having a better offensive year than Brantley, Springer and Haniger (who all have other teammates on the team) and has better counting stats than both Cruz and Choo. If we’re going to have 1 player from every team, can’t we at least get the actual best player from that team rather than the team’s 4 best pitcher (by WAR)?

9:20
Justin Mason: The whole All-Star voting is dumb IMO.

9:21
Kev: Traded Godley and J.Gray for Dozier – how’d I do?

9:21
Justin Mason: Great!

9:21
John: Why does Garrett Hampson stay off of prospect lists?

9:22
Justin Mason: I know some people are higher on him, but where does he play long term? With Arenado, Story, and Rodgers all under team control, he has no spot.

9:22
brood550: Who’s your Astro’s starter stash in the event Keuchel isn’t resigned?  Dynasty league

9:23
Justin Mason: Whitely is the next man up. I am assuming he is taken in all dynasty leagues, so after that its Bukaukas

9:23
Matt: Whats the word on Ramos’ injury? Would it be smart to trade a keeper Ramos for a rental Yadi? If Ramos isn’t coming back this year, I’m fine with it, but feel that’s a lot of lost offense if he does…

9:23
Justin Mason: I don’t think the injury is that serious, but if it is, then I would do that.

9:24
Richard: 12-team AL Only H2H where I’m comfortably in a playoff position.  Buxton, Kole Calhoun, Willie Calhoun or Jorge Polanco ROS?

9:24
Justin Mason: Calhoun for me unless you want upside then its buxton.

9:24
Aaron: I’m trying to acquire C. Morton for the playoff run – are you concerned about his history of injuries?

9:24
Justin Mason: I am always concerned, but at this point he is worth the gamble.

9:24
baseballdude: who has a better ROS…jake bauers or gregory polanco?

9:25
Justin Mason: Polanco

9:25
Dan: Already threw in the towel in a keeper league…. Luis Castillo dropped, think he’s worth picking up as a flier to maybe be one of my final keepers if he turns it around…. which of these similar lottery ticket should be dropped for him? all count as $10: Kingham, Musgrove, D German, D Rodriguez

9:25
Justin Mason: sure. Prefer him as a lottery ticket than the rest.

9:25
Rick: Do you believe in Zach Eflin?

9:25
Justin Mason: As long as that velocity sticks, I believe.

9:25
Desperate, Confused Marlins Fan: Does Hader ever become an good fantasy starter?

9:25
Justin Mason: He needs another pitch first

9:26
Turgid: Who do you like better, Alen Hanson or Ketel Marte?

9:26
Justin Mason: Hanson because I think there is a real chance that the Backs acquire a piece that makes Marte a part timer.

9:26
RMR: Senzel up quickly next year assuming he comes back healthy and hits?  Guessing he ends up at 2nd with Gennett likely to be traded at the deadline, right?

9:27
Justin Mason: Nah, they will play the service time game again.

9:27
RMR: Snell is obviously looking at some regression.  How much are we talking?

9:27
Justin Mason: I actually believe. He may regress a little, but he is easily in my top 15 starters ROS.

9:27
6 Chatters Ahead Of Us Jimmy: T. Pham or C. Santana for my last outfield spot ROS? H2H points, deep 10 team

9:27
Justin Mason: Pham

9:27
Jeff: In a obp dynasty, Seager or Trea?

9:27
Justin Mason: Trea and not close.

9:28
Phil: Syndergaard, Pollock for Acuna, Mazara, Andrew Miller and Nick Kingham. Who wins long term?

9:28
Justin Mason: Gulp… Acuna side

9:28
RMR: xwOBA has Rendon as a top ten hitter.  Probably not reasonable to expect that going forward, but can he hit his way into the tier of 3B right behind Jose Ramirez (Arenado, Bryant, Machado)?

9:29
Justin Mason: I don’t think he has the power or speed to do it in fantasy. Better real life hitter.

9:29
Justin Mason: Still like him though

9:29
Monstrosity: Marlins will compete for a wild card spot in the year ________.

9:29
Justin Mason: that pigs fly

9:29
Neal: Any hope for Orlando Arcia to get back on track? Good buy low? Same could be said for Amed Rosario, I suppose.

9:30
Justin Mason: I bought him in a dynasty league. 2018 might be a lost season, but I believe in the talent as a whole.

9:30
Vegan Man!: Who do you prefer in a 12 team roto – Lamb or Matt Chapman? Thanks!

9:30
Justin Mason: Chapman

9:30
Parts + Gleyber: So you’re saying there’s evidence?

9:31
Justin Mason: Lots of articles written on the derby and after effects. Most guys regress a little, but that’s because you don’t often get chosen for it unless you have had a big first half anyways.

9:32
Stew: NL only keep forever….my Bellinger for his Goldschmidt?

9:32
Justin Mason: If you are trying to compete now, then yes!

9:32
Uncle Mork: Mookie for Dozier + one of Bauers/Berrios seem fair? 12 tm roto with some level of keeper, Berrios can be kept next year for $9, Mookie and Dozier cannot be kept

9:33
Justin Mason: Kind of feel like I should get a bit more for Mookie, but if that is the best offer, I guess it’s better to get something if I can’t win now.

9:33
Justin Mason: Sorry everyone, but I have to run to that interview. I will be posting a link to a youtube live on twitter and facebook in a bit. Rendon has a higher career wRC+ than Arenado. I know parks matter for fantasy, but I don’t see why you’d question his placement among that group, let alone behind it.

It seems like you DON’T know that parks matter for fantasy
